Windows does not have a confirmed Microsoft error-table definition for 0x8007422. The string is often mistyped, or it may be a code shown by Microsoft Store, Xbox, an update, or Windows Security rather than a Defender-only error. First copy the code exactly and identify which component displayed it. If the code is actually 0x80070422, Microsoft classifies that different code as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, usually involving a disabled Windows Update service.
Use the repair path that matches the affected component. Do not apply a Windows Update service fix merely because 0x8007422 looks similar, and record the exact new message after every restart or repair attempt.

What 0x8007422 means
Microsoft’s documented Windows Update error table defines 0x80070422, not 0x8007422. Therefore, 0x8007422 should be treated as an unconfirmed or misread code until you verify the original screen. A missing zero, an extra digit, or a transposed pair can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
Community reports show the string in more than one context. One Microsoft Q&A report used it when Microsoft Store would not open or download applications and Minecraft sign-in failed. Another Store/update report suggested that the intended code might be 0x80070422. Those reports document specific situations, not a universal meaning for 0x8007422.

The component that displayed the message is consequently more useful than the code alone. A Windows Update failure, a Store cache problem, a Windows Security configuration issue, and damaged system files require different checks.
Before changing anything: capture the exact failure
- Copy the complete code. Use a screenshot or write every character, including the leading
0x. Check whether the code is0x8007422or0x80070422. - Record where it appeared. Note whether the window was Windows Security (the current interface for Defender), Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Xbox, Minecraft, or an optional Windows feature.
- Check your Windows build. Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Record the edition, version, and OS build shown in the dialog. - Note the action that triggered it. Examples include checking for updates, opening Store, downloading an app, signing in to Xbox, running a Defender action, or installing an optional feature.
- Restart once and test the same action. If the code changes, keep the new code; it is the symptom you should troubleshoot next.
Do not delete folders, disable security protections, or edit the registry while the code is still unconfirmed. A precise record prevents a Store problem from being mistaken for a disabled-update-service problem.
Choose the repair path by symptom
| Where the message appears | First path to try | What a result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check again. | If the troubleshooter identifies a service or update component, continue with the matching service or system-file step. |
| Microsoft Store or an app download | Run wsreset, then reopen Store. |
A Store-specific repair is more appropriate than repeatedly changing Windows Update services. |
| Xbox or Minecraft sign-in alongside Store problems | Use the Store path first and capture any new code. | The reported scenario is Store-related; it does not establish a Defender definition for 0x8007422. |
| Windows Security or Defender settings | Use the Windows Security troubleshooter where it is offered. | The troubleshooter checks core security settings and update-related protection components. |
| Upgrade failure or suspected system-file damage | Run DISM, then System File Checker, and address update services. | Corruption or servicing problems may be involved, but these commands are not a guaranteed fix for an unidentified code. |
| The confirmed code is 0x80070422 | Check Windows Update and transfer services in Services. | This is the documented disabled-service condition, unlike the unconfirmed 0x8007422 string. |
If Windows Update is the affected component
Run the built-in troubleshooter
Windows 11 places automated troubleshooters in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for the Windows Update troubleshooter, and follow its prompts. Allow it to apply a suggested repair, then restart the PC and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. Restart after it finishes and check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter reports a service, restart, or update-component issue, write down that finding. If it produces a different error code, stop using 0x8007422 as the diagnosis and follow the new code instead.
Check services only when the code is 0x80070422 or the update symptom points there
- Press
Windows key + R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update. Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic, select Apply, and choose Start if the service is stopped. Select OK.
- Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). Confirm it is not set to Disabled. If it is stopped and Windows allows it to start, select Start.
- Close Services, restart Windows, and run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates again.
Microsoft’s classification of 0x80070422 is ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED; that is why the service check belongs to the confirmed 0x80070422 path. It does not prove that an otherwise identical-looking 0x8007422 message has the same cause.
If Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Minecraft is affected
Reset the Store cache with wsreset
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type
wsresetand press Enter. - Wait while the blank command window completes. Store should open automatically when the reset finishes.
- Try the original download, Store launch, or sign-in action again.
The wsreset step is specifically relevant to the reported Store scenario. If Store remains unable to open or download apps, capture the new message and its code. Do not keep repeating Windows Update service changes when the failure remains confined to Store.
Separate Store symptoms from Defender symptoms
A Store or Xbox sign-in failure can appear alongside a string that looks like a Defender code. That combination does not establish that Defender caused the failure. Record whether Windows Security itself shows an alert, whether only Store is affected, and whether Windows Update succeeds independently. Those observations determine the next branch.
If Windows Security or Defender reports the problem
Use the Windows Security troubleshooter when it is available in your Windows installation. Microsoft describes this troubleshooter as checking and, where appropriate, enabling:
- User Account Control (UAC).
- Data Execution Prevention (DEP).
- Windows Firewall.
- SmartScreen and phishing protection.
- Antivirus protection and antivirus update settings.
Follow the troubleshooter’s prompts, allow a proposed change only if it matches the displayed issue, and restart when requested. Then open Windows Security and repeat the action that originally produced the message. If Windows Security shows a new, more specific code or a service name, preserve that information for the next step.
Do not turn off firewall, SmartScreen, UAC, or antivirus protection as a diagnostic shortcut. The troubleshooter is intended to check their configuration without leaving those protections unnecessarily disabled.

Repair system files when an upgrade or corruption is implicated
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance uses Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), followed by System File Checker (SFC), when damaged Windows components may be involved. Run these commands from an elevated terminal.
- Open Start, type
Command PromptorTerminal, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Repeat the original update, Store, or Windows Security action and record the exact result.
DISM and SFC address Windows component integrity; they do not provide a confirmed interpretation of 0x8007422. If the issue is specifically an upgrade or repeated update failure, Microsoft’s guidance also includes checking update services and resetting Windows Update components. Use that reset procedure as an escalation matched to the upgrade symptom, rather than as a generic response to every message containing similar digits.
Retest in a controlled order
After each repair, test one component at a time. This prevents a later change from hiding which step mattered.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
winveragain if the system updated, so you know the current build. - Test the component that originally failed: Windows Update, Store, Windows Security, Xbox, or the upgrade.
- Write down whether the original code disappeared, changed, or returned unchanged.
- If a new code appears, start a new diagnosis from that code and component instead of continuing to call it 0x8007422.
A successful update does not automatically prove that a Store or Defender issue is fixed. Test the original action and any related action separately.

Confusing 0x8007422 with 0x80070422
The codes differ by a zero and by their digit sequence. Only 0x80070422 has the documented ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED classification in the cited Windows Update table. Verify the screenshot or original text before changing service startup settings.
Assuming every appearance is a Defender failure
The documented community examples place the string in Microsoft Store and Store/update contexts. If Windows Security opens normally and only Store downloads fail, follow the Store cache path first.
Repeating a repair after the symptom has changed
After a restart or a troubleshooter, Windows may present a different code. Continuing with the old diagnosis can obscure the actual failure. Keep a short timeline of the code, component, action, and result.
Ignoring the Windows version
The troubleshooting interface differs between Windows 11 and Windows 10. In addition, Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 PC may have update behavior affected by that lifecycle, so include the edition, version, and build from winver when evaluating update results.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When to escalate
Escalate instead of making progressively broader changes when:
- The exact code remains 0x8007422 but no component can be identified.
- The message returns after the relevant troubleshooter, service check, Store reset, and system-file checks.
- DISM or SFC reports that it cannot complete repairs.
- Windows Update, Store, and Windows Security each fail with different codes.
- The PC cannot start required services, or service settings revert after restart.
At that point, preserve screenshots, the winver result, the affected component, the attempted steps, and every new code. This evidence is more useful than describing the problem only as “Defender error 0x8007422,” because that label has no confirmed Microsoft definition.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and can offer cleanup and settings tools. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no utility repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
Bottom line
There is no confirmed Microsoft definition for 0x8007422. Verify the characters and the component first. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter or service check for a matching update failure, wsreset for Store symptoms, the Windows Security troubleshooter for security-configuration issues, and DISM followed by SFC when an upgrade or damaged system files are implicated. Treat 0x80070422 as a separate, documented disabled-service code, and let any new message—not the original typo—set the next troubleshooting path.
