Windows error 0x80070002 means an update, upgrade, installation, recovery task or related Windows component could not find a file it needed. The string ox8007002 is usually a typing error for 0x80070002. Restart first, identify where the code appeared, then work through the built-in troubleshooter, update-cache reset and system-file repairs in that order. The exact remedy depends on whether the failure occurred in Windows Update, Windows Setup, Microsoft Store, backup or recovery.
What Windows error 0x80070002 means
Microsoft groups 0x80070002 with Windows Update installation failures. In upgrade and setup scenarios, the related form 0x80070002-0x20009 is described as The system cannot find the file specified. Windows is not necessarily saying that one of your personal documents disappeared. More often, a temporary update package, component-store file, protected system file, dynamic-link library, service reference or registry entry is missing, damaged or pointing to a location that no longer exists.

The code is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis. A failed cumulative update can leave incomplete download data; an earlier interrupted update can leave servicing operations unfinished; corruption on the system volume can prevent Windows from reading a needed file; and an upgrade can fail when Setup cannot locate a required component. The screen, application and phase in which you see the message determine which repair has the best chance of working.

Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history on current Windows 11 and Windows 10 builds to see whether the code is attached to a particular update. Write down the update number, the time of failure and the exact wording. If you saw the message only once and the operation completed after a restart, monitor the next attempt rather than making deeper changes.

Prepare safely before advanced repairs
- Sign in with an administrator account. The cache, servicing and disk commands require elevation.
- Back up important documents and, before registry, disk or recovery work, create a current backup of the operating-system disk. Microsoft specifically recommends backing up before deeper repair work.
- Save open files and close games, installers and other programs that may be using Windows Update or the files being repaired.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power. Do not interrupt DISM, SFC or a scheduled disk check.
- Have the exact context available. A fix appropriate for Windows Update is not automatically the right first move for an in-place upgrade or system-image restore.
Step 1: Restart and reproduce the error
Choose Start > Power > Restart, not merely sleep or hibernate. A restart clears a pending reboot state and can release a file that an earlier update left locked. After Windows loads, repeat the same operation once and note whether the code returns immediately, during download, during installation, at a percentage, or after a reboot. That timing helps distinguish a temporary download problem from a persistent component or storage failure.
If the error is gone, install updates one at a time when Windows offers that choice and keep the update-history record. If it returns, continue with the context-specific sequence instead of repeatedly forcing the same failed installation.
Step 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On current Windows versions, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, allow the diagnostic checks to complete and apply any proposed correction. Restart when prompted, then retry the update.

Step 3: Reset the Windows Update cache
Use this procedure when 0x80070002 is tied to Windows Update. It removes incomplete or corrupt temporary update downloads without deleting personal documents. You need an administrator account.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows reports that an item is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any update-related window before trying again.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart the computer. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates, then allow the download and installation to run without interruption.
The first scan after a cache reset can take longer because Windows has to obtain update metadata again. A successful reset does not prove that every underlying system file is healthy; if the same code returns, proceed to component repair rather than deleting the cache repeatedly.
Step 4: Repair the component store with DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies the known-good files that other repair tools may need. Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM first and System File Checker second.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to reach completion. It can appear to pause at a percentage while servicing continues; do not close the window or power off the computer. DISM normally uses Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update itself is unusable, Microsoft’s guidance allows a known-good local source with the form below; replace <path> with a matching source that you have verified for the same Windows edition and build.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccessDo not guess at a source path or mix files from a different edition. A mismatched source can create additional servicing errors. If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, record the complete message and move to log review or Microsoft Support rather than repeatedly running random commands.
Step 5: Check protected system files with SFC
After DISM finishes, keep the elevated Command Prompt open and run:
sfc /scannowSystem File Checker scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies with a cached copy when one is available. Let verification reach 100 percent before closing the window or restarting.
Use the final message to choose the next action:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. SFC detected no corruption in the protected files it checked. The missing file may instead belong to an update package, setup source, registry reference or storage path.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced 0x80070002.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Inspect the CBS log for the filenames and components involved. A matching repair source, another DISM pass using that source or Microsoft Support may be required.
Running SFC before DISM can leave SFC without the component-store files it needs, which is why the order matters. If you accidentally ran them in the opposite order, run DISM to completion and then run SFC again.

Step 6: Read CBS.log for the missing component
For persistent servicing failures, open C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log in a text editor with administrator permission. Search for 0x80070002, the phrase file specified, a filename shown in the error, or the name of the update that failed. The log can contain many entries, so focus on lines recorded at the time of the failed attempt.
Record the component identity, package name and filename rather than deleting files manually. Those details tell Microsoft Support or an authorized Windows technician whether the failure involves a protected system file, a component-store package or a servicing transaction. CBS.log is diagnostic evidence; editing it or removing entries will not repair Windows.
Step 7: Check the system volume when disk errors are plausible
A damaged file system can make an otherwise present file unreadable. Back up important data first, then open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:Because the system volume is normally in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y if you are ready, close your programs and restart. Do not interrupt the disk check. The duration depends on the volume and the repairs required.

Use this step when you see broader signs of storage trouble, such as repeated read errors, unexpected file corruption or failures involving unrelated files. If the only symptom is one failed update and DISM, SFC and the cache reset succeed, a disk check may not be necessary. Persistent disk errors warrant a current backup and professional assessment before another upgrade attempt.

When Setup reports 0x80070002-0x20009, Microsoft’s wording is The system cannot find the file specified. Apply the low-risk repairs above first, then prepare the upgrade environment:
- Disconnect unnecessary external hardware such as removable storage, docks, printers and other USB devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and hardware required to run the computer.
- Open Device Manager and look for devices with warning icons or reported driver errors. Resolve a clearly identified device problem before retrying Setup; a setup process can fail when it cannot use a required device component.
- Temporarily remove incompatible third-party security software when appropriate for your environment, following the product’s own removal instructions. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary, and reinstall a compatible security product after the upgrade succeeds.
- Perform a clean restart so nonessential startup software is not holding setup files open. Record any services or startup items you disable so you can restore them after the test.
- Run DISM and SFC in the order described above, restart, and retry the upgrade from the same trusted installation path.
If Setup still fails, preserve the exact phase, code and log details and use Microsoft’s upgrade guidance or Microsoft Support. Avoid unverified registry cleaners and repair utilities that promise a guaranteed upgrade; deleting registry entries can remove references Windows still needs.

The same hexadecimal code can be emitted by different Windows subsystems. For a Microsoft Store or application installation failure, write down the app name, whether the failure occurs during download, install or launch, and whether other apps install normally. Then use the restart, troubleshooter, DISM, SFC and log sequence to rule out a system-wide missing component. Do not assume that clearing the Windows Update cache alone will repair an application package that has its own damaged source.
For backup, system-image restore or another recovery operation, verify that the source drive, network location or image file is connected and readable before repeating the operation. Keep a separate backup of important data. If the recovery environment identifies a particular missing file, capture that filename and the complete message; recovery-specific repairs depend on the image and Windows edition involved, so escalation is safer than deleting files from the recovery source.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Escalate when DISM or SFC repeatedly fail, CBS.log identifies a component you cannot source safely, chkdsk reports recurring errors, the upgrade fails after the hardware and software checks, or the computer contains business-critical data. Contact Microsoft Support or an authorized Windows technician with the error code, Windows edition and build, update or setup phase, SFC and DISM results, CBS.log excerpts and any disk-check findings. That evidence is more useful than a screenshot of the final pop-up alone.
Do not download a replacement DLL from an unknown website, alter registry entries merely because they mention a missing service, or run several repair programs at once. Those actions can obscure the original cause and make recovery harder. Built-in Windows tools, a verified backup and a clear escalation record provide the safest path when 0x80070002 persists.
