Windows error 0x80070057 means ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, shown to users as “The parameter is incorrect.” The code in the original title, 0X800070057, contains an extra zero; Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070057. The error is generic, so the correct repair depends on whether it appeared in Windows Update, during a Windows upgrade or installation, while restoring a backup, or in another operation.
Start by backing up personal files. Then use the Windows Update troubleshooter, run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt, reset the Windows Update cache if necessary, and verify date and time settings. Upgrade and installation failures need the Windows Update and component-reset guidance for that scenario rather than an unrelated repair.

What error 0x80070057 means
Windows uses 0x80070057 when an operation receives a parameter it cannot accept. A parameter can be a setting, file value, service state, or other input required by the operation. The code does not identify one defective component by itself. Microsoft describes it as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER and displays “The parameter is incorrect.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor Windows Update, Microsoft lists corrupted files, permission problems, and incorrect system configurations among possible causes. Those possibilities overlap, but they require different remedies. Clearing an update cache may help a damaged update download; it will not necessarily solve a permissions problem or an error caused by an installation process. Record exactly where the message appeared before changing anything.

Confirm the characters in the code
Check the message, event entry, or setup log carefully. The documented form is 0x80070057: zero, lowercase or uppercase “x,” then 80070057. A screenshot or transcription with an extra zero can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction. If Windows shows a different code, follow that code’s procedure instead.
Back up files before troubleshooting
Microsoft’s first instruction for this problem is to back up personal files before trying the solutions. This matters because service changes and system-file repairs alter Windows components, and an interrupted upgrade can leave the computer unable to complete the normal startup process.
Use OneDrive
If your files are already stored in OneDrive, confirm that synchronization has finished. Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer and check that recently changed documents and pictures are present. Do not assume that a file is protected merely because the OneDrive app is installed; verify that the files you need appear in the synced location.
Copy files to a USB drive
Connect a USB flash drive with enough free space. In File Explorer, open the folders containing documents, pictures, saved games, videos, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable files. Select the files, choose Copy, open the USB drive, and choose Paste. Open several copied files from the USB drive to confirm that the backup is readable before you continue.
A backup is preparation, not a repair. Keep the USB drive connected only while copying, then eject it normally. If the computer is encrypted or shared, make sure you can access the backup from an account you control.
Identify where the error appears
The failure context determines the least risky next step. Use this map before running commands:
| Where 0x80070057 appears | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update in Settings | Windows Update troubleshooter, then SFC | These steps diagnose update components and repair protected system files without deleting the update cache first. |
| Windows 11 upgrade or installation | Back up files, then use Windows Update troubleshooting and the upgrade-specific component-reset guidance | Setup failures can involve update components as well as the installation process. |
| Another Microsoft operation, such as a backup or restore task | Note the exact operation, settings, and file or drive involved before applying update-specific steps | The code is generic; an update-cache reset may be irrelevant to a different operation. |
If the message appeared only once and the operation succeeds after a restart, record the event but do not make invasive changes solely because the code exists in a log. If it returns consistently, continue with the branch that matches the failed action.
Fix 0x80070057 during Windows Update
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to diagnose the update components and attempt the recommended repairs.
- Restart Windows if it asks you to, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows may report that it found and fixed a problem, found a problem but could not repair it, or found nothing. Each result is useful: a successful repair points to a retry; an unresolved result means you should proceed to System File Checker rather than repeatedly pressing Check for updates.
2. Run System File Checker as administrator
System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows system files and repairs files it can replace. It requires an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open the Start menu and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Closing it early can leave the check incomplete.
- Read the final message, restart the computer, and try Windows Update again.
Do not treat the SFC result as a diagnosis of the error code itself. It tells you whether protected system files were found and repaired, left unchanged, or could not all be repaired. If Windows says it repaired files, the restart is part of the procedure; retry the update only after Windows has loaded normally.
3. Reset the Windows Update cache
A damaged update download can keep causing the same parameter error. Microsoft’s procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, and start the service again.
- Save open work and sign in with an account that can approve administrator actions.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt by searching for
Command Prompt, right-clicking it, and selecting Run as administrator. - Stop the Windows Update service using the service controls available on your Windows installation. The service must be stopped before its cached files can be cleared.
- In File Explorer, go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the parent
Windowsfolder. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and close any File Explorer window currently previewing the file. - Start the Windows Update service again.
- Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Clearing this cache removes downloaded update files; Windows can download them again. It does not delete your personal documents. The next scan or download may take longer because the cache has to be rebuilt.
4. Check date, time, and time zone
Incorrect clock settings can interfere with update communication and validation. In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when those options are appropriate for your location. Select Sync now, wait for the synchronization result, and retry the update.
If the computer is offline, automatic synchronization cannot complete. Connect it to the network you normally use, verify the displayed time zone, and synchronize again. A correct clock alone will not repair damaged system files, so continue with the earlier steps if the code remains.
5. Retry once and note the result
After each repair, perform one clean retry rather than running several changes at once. Record whether the update starts downloading, fails at installation, or returns the code immediately. That distinction tells you whether the cache or system-file change affected the problem and prevents you from losing the sequence of changes.
When 0x80070057 appears during a Windows upgrade or installation
An upgrade or installation failure is not identical to an ordinary update failure. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance identifies 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect” and directs users to Windows Update troubleshooting and component-reset procedures where they apply.

Prepare before restarting setup
- Finish the personal-file backup described above.
- Disconnect unnecessary external storage and accessories so setup has fewer devices to evaluate. Keep only hardware required for the installation available.
- Write down the exact stage at which setup stops and any accompanying text. “Preparing,” “installing,” and “reverting” describe different phases.
- If setup returns to the previous Windows installation, allow the rollback to finish before attempting another change.
Do not repeatedly force the computer off during setup. An interrupted upgrade can create a second problem unrelated to the original parameter error.
Apply the update procedure first
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt, restart, and retry the upgrade. If the failure persists, reset the Windows Update cache as described earlier and retry only after the service has been started again. These are the component-focused steps Microsoft associates with the code when an upgrade depends on Windows Update.
Use the upgrade-specific component reset when applicable
Microsoft’s upgrade article includes component-reset guidance for cases in which update components remain damaged or inconsistent. Follow the instructions for your Windows release exactly, including the order in which services are stopped and restarted. Labels and procedures can change between Windows releases, so do not substitute commands from an older edition or from a different error.

That information is more useful for a support technician than a generic statement that “Windows will not install,” because 0x80070057 only identifies an invalid parameter, not the specific setup input that was rejected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Permission and configuration checks
Microsoft lists permission issues and incorrect system configurations as possible contributors to the Windows Update form of this error. The following checks stay within the manual procedure and help distinguish those causes from a damaged cache.
Use an elevated account for repair actions
SFC and service changes require administrator approval. If the Run as administrator option is missing or the User Account Control prompt requests credentials you do not have, sign in with an account authorized to manage the PC or ask its administrator to perform the steps. Running sfc /scannow in a normal Command Prompt does not provide the same access.
Do not change unrelated settings
A parameter error can tempt you to edit the registry, rename system folders, or disable security controls. Those changes are not part of Microsoft’s documented sequence for this code and can make recovery harder. Keep a written record of the failed operation and change one supported item at a time: troubleshooter, SFC, cache, then date and time verification.
Check whether the problem is operation-specific
If Windows Update works but a separate backup, restore, or installation task still reports 0x80070057, the update cache is unlikely to be the complete explanation. Reproduce the failure once, note the selected destination, source, or option that immediately precedes the message, and use guidance for that operation. The shared code does not mean that every occurrence has the same cause.
Choosing the next step safely
| Step | Primary purpose | Local-state risk | Administrator access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back up files | Protect personal data before repairs | None to Windows; requires storage and time | No, unless the files are restricted |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Diagnose and attempt supported update repairs | Low | Windows may request approval |
sfc /scannow |
Check and repair protected system files | Low, but allow it to finish | Yes |
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents |
Remove potentially corrupt downloaded update files | Moderate; downloads must be rebuilt | Yes, and the service must be stopped |
| Date and time synchronization | Correct configuration that can interfere with update validation | Low | Usually no |
| Upgrade component reset | Repair update components used by setup | Higher than a diagnostic step | Yes |
This order puts diagnostics before deletion and places the backup before every operation that can alter local state. If a step changes the symptom, stop and record the result rather than stacking additional changes immediately.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Using the mistyped code
Searching for 0X800070057 can produce instructions for a different or nonexistent code. Recheck the screen and use 0x80070057 when comparing Microsoft guidance.
Deleting the wrong folder
The cache procedure concerns the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the entire C:Windows directory or unrelated folders. If Windows reports that files are locked, stop the Windows Update service and close applications that may be using the folder before trying again.

Skipping the restart
SFC repairs and service changes may not be fully reflected until Windows restarts. A restart also ensures that the next update scan begins with the service in a known state.
Repeating a failed scan without changing the cause
Running Check for updates over and over does not repair a corrupted cache, an incorrect clock, or damaged protected files. Follow the sequence, note the result after each step, and move to the next supported action when the previous one did not resolve the error.
Assuming the code proves malware
0x80070057 is an invalid-parameter error, not a malware diagnosis. The documented Windows Update causes include corrupted files, permissions, and configuration problems. Use the operation context and the repair results to decide what to do next.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop manual changes when the update or upgrade completes normally, or when Windows repeatedly rolls back and the same code returns despite the documented steps. Keep the backup, the exact code, the failed operation, the troubleshooting results, and the time of failure. Those details let an administrator or Microsoft support channel investigate the specific installation state without guessing.
