Windows error 0x8007045D is the HRESULT form of ERROR_IO_DEVICE: Windows could not complete an input/output request. It does not identify a single bad part. The failure may be in the media, cable, USB port, enclosure, drive, controller, or driver involved in the operation.
Protect important files first, then isolate the connection before replacing hardware. Test a direct connection, a different port and cable, known-good media, and another computer when possible. Only after that should you run filesystem repairs or change drivers.

What 0x8007045D means
The underlying Windows message is: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” An input/output (I/O) request is any read or write between Windows and storage hardware. Copying a file, restoring a backup, installing Windows, reading a memory card, or burning a DVD can all generate the same code.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The code is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. It cannot tell you whether the problem is a damaged file, a failing disk, a loose cable, an unreliable USB port, a faulty enclosure, an incompatible blank disc, a burner, a storage controller, or its driver. The operation that failed and the tests that reproduce it provide the useful clues.

Start with a safe triage
- Record the context. Write down whether the error appeared during a file copy, backup, Windows installation, DVD burn, or another task. Note the source and destination drive letters, the device name, and whether every file fails or only particular files.
- Protect readable data. If the device contains files you need, stop repeated write attempts. Copy anything that still opens to a separate, known-good location before running repair commands.
- Disconnect unnecessary hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection if needed, and the affected device. Extra USB storage, hubs, card readers, phones, and printers can complicate isolation.
- Test the physical path. Connect the device directly to the PC, try another USB port and cable, and bypass a hub or external enclosure if possible.
- Use a control test. Try a known-good card, disc, USB drive, or cable in the same setup. If available, test the suspect device on another computer.
These tests separate a problem that follows the device from one that stays with the computer or connection. Do not assume Windows itself is damaged simply because the dialog names Windows.
Match the symptom to the operation
| Where the code appears | Useful first suspects | Most informative test |
|---|---|---|
| Copying files to or from a USB drive, card, or external disk | Damaged media, cable, port, enclosure, or storage driver | Direct connection, another cable and port, then a known-good device |
| Backup or restore | The source or destination drive, its filesystem, or an intermittent connection | Check which drive letter fails and test a different destination |
| Windows installation or upgrade | Installation media, an attached external device, storage hardware, or a driver | Remove nonessential hardware and retry with verified media and a direct connection |
| DVD or CD burning | Incompatible or defective blank disc, burner malfunction, firmware, or burn-speed mismatch | Different blank-media brand/type, slower speed, and burner troubleshooting |
| Only particular files fail | Those files or the sectors containing them may be unreadable | Copy other files first and compare results from another computer |
The table is a triage aid, not a ranking of causes. No authoritative prevalence percentage or failure-rate statistic has been established for this code.
Protect data before filesystem repair
Every retry of a write operation can make a marginal device harder to read. If the files matter, prioritize copying them rather than proving that the original device can be repaired. Use a separate physical drive or another trusted destination, and keep the original device unchanged while you decide whether recovery is needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Copy the most valuable and irreplaceable files first.
- If one folder fails, continue with folders that still open; a single unreadable file does not prove that every file is lost.
- Do not format, initialize, or repartition the device while recovery is still a possibility.
- Do not repeatedly cancel and restart a failing write, backup, or burn job.
When a device repeatedly disconnects, makes unusual mechanical noises, becomes unavailable, or causes the entire computer to hang, stop testing it and preserve the remaining readable data.
Isolate the cable, port, enclosure, and computer
Use a direct connection
Remove USB hubs, extension leads, docking stations, and third-party enclosures from the path when possible. Plug the affected device directly into the computer. A direct connection removes several possible points of failure at once.

Change one variable at a time
Try a different USB port, then a different cable, recording the result after each change. If the device uses an enclosure or adapter, test another compatible enclosure or adapter. Changing everything simultaneously can hide which component fixed—or caused—the error.
Test known-good hardware
Use a cable and medium that work reliably with another device. Put a known-good USB drive or card in the suspect port. If the known-good device also fails in that port, investigate the computer or port; if only the original device fails, focus on its media, enclosure, or drive.
Test another computer
A second computer is a useful control. A failure that follows the device across computers, ports, and cables points toward the device or its medium. A failure limited to one computer points toward that computer’s port, controller, driver, or Windows installation.
Run CHKDSK only after securing important files
If the evidence points to a filesystem problem and the data has been copied as far as possible, run the read-and-recover option from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator and approve the prompt.
- Type
chkdsk X: /r, replacingX:with the affected drive letter, then press Enter. - Read the volume name and drive letter shown by CHKDSK before confirming anything.
- Let the scan finish. Large or damaged volumes can take a long time.
The /r option checks for unreadable sectors and attempts to recover readable information. CHKDSK can make changes to the filesystem; it is not a substitute for copying data and is not the first step for a device that may be physically failing. If the command reports that the volume cannot be read, the device repeatedly disconnects, or the scan causes worsening symptoms, stop and consider professional recovery.

Check Device Manager and Windows updates
Look for a device warning
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Disk drives, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Storage controllers, and any category for the affected device.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that disappears and reappears while you reproduce the failure.
- Open the device’s Properties to read its status and error details.
For a storage or USB device, update or reinstall the relevant driver using Device Manager, then restart and retest. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use the device’s Driver tab to roll back that change when the option is available.
Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, restart, and repeat the test. Updates can address compatibility problems, but installing them does not prove that the physical device is healthy.
Review the event log
Open Event Viewer and review entries in Windows Logs > System from the exact time of the failure. Look for storage, disk, USB, controller, or driver events that identify whether Windows lost the device, encountered a timeout, or reported unreadable data. Record the event details before clearing logs or making changes.
Undo a recent change
If 0x8007045D started after installing new hardware, changing an enclosure, updating a driver, or applying another system change, remove or roll back that change and retest. Reconnect the previous hardware configuration if it was available. This comparison is more useful than assuming that the newest component is compatible.
Use Safe Mode or Windows recovery when normal startup is affected
If the storage or USB problem prevents normal startup, use Windows recovery options or Safe Mode to perform the same isolation steps with fewer third-party drivers and services. Disconnect nonessential external devices first. Safe Mode can help determine whether a startup driver or service is involved, but it cannot repair physically failing media.

Fixes for copying files to a USB drive or external disk
- Identify whether the source or destination is the drive that disappears or reports the error.
- Stop the copy and save readable files elsewhere.
- Reconnect the destination directly to the PC; try another port and cable.
- Test a different external drive in the same port and test the suspect drive on another computer.
- Check Device Manager for USB, storage, and disk warnings, then update or reinstall the relevant driver.
- Run
chkdsk X: /ronly after data protection and only on the volume that appears to have a filesystem problem.
If every copy to one device fails while other devices work, treat that medium or its enclosure as suspect. If the same port fails with several known-good devices, investigate the computer’s port or controller instead.
Fixes for backup and restore failures
Backups can involve both a source volume and a destination volume, so determine which drive letter or device triggers the error. Try a different destination before changing the source. If the backup succeeds to another device, the original destination or its connection is the likely boundary of the problem. If reading the source fails for multiple files, prioritize data recovery and avoid destructive repair operations.
Disconnecting nonessential external hardware is especially important during a Windows upgrade or installation. Leave only the installation device and essential input hardware connected, then retry. If the installation still fails, test the installation media, storage connection, and target drive separately rather than treating the code as proof of a general Windows corruption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.DVD and CD burning: a separate troubleshooting branch
Microsoft support identifies four DVD-specific possibilities:
- The brand of blank disc may be incompatible with the burner.
- The disc may be defective.
- The burner may malfunction and require manufacturer troubleshooting or firmware.
- The disc and burner may not support the selected burn speed.
Try different blank media
Use another brand or type of blank disc. In this narrow case, blank DVD-R or DVD+R media is the relevant replacement item. New media cannot repair a failing burner, so treat a successful burn on one brand as evidence about compatibility, not a permanent hardware fix.

Reduce the burn speed
Select a slower speed in the burning program and retry with a fresh disc. A speed mismatch can produce an I/O error even when the drive can read existing discs.
Check the burner
Test whether the burner can read or write other supported media. If several known-good discs fail at different speeds, follow the drive manufacturer’s troubleshooting and firmware guidance. Do not conclude that Windows is corrupted until the burner and media have been tested.
When repeated failures indicate a hardware or media problem
The likelihood of a failing device or medium rises when the same error follows the device across multiple cables, ports, computers, and known-good operating conditions. The code alone still cannot establish that a drive is dead. Preserve whatever remains readable and stop experiments that could overwrite evidence.

Windows version and support status
Microsoft’s Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date affects update and upgrade choices; it does not change what 0x8007045D means or prove that an I/O device is defective. Record the Windows edition and version when contacting support, and distinguish an unsupported operating system from the immediate cable, media, drive, controller, or driver failure.
Quick Recap
A compact decision checklist
- One file fails: copy other files first and compare the same file from another source if possible.
- One device fails: change cable, port, enclosure, computer, and known-good media.
- Several devices fail on one port: investigate that port, controller, or its driver.
- Filesystem symptoms after data protection: run
chkdsk X: /rfrom an elevated Command Prompt. - Failure began after a change: roll back the driver or hardware and retest.
- DVD burn only: use another disc brand/type, lower the speed, and test the burner.
- Failure persists everywhere: preserve data and escalate to the manufacturer or a qualified recovery service.
