If Windows Explorer (called File Explorer in Windows 10) takes a long time to open, hangs on “Working on it,” or loads thumbnails slowly, start with Windows updates, a restart, and an Explorer process reset. Then use Task Manager to identify whether disk, CPU, or memory pressure is involved. Indexing, low free space, malware or runaway startup programs, damaged Windows files, and third-party folder extensions are common directions to investigate; the correct fix depends on which operation is slow.
What “very slow” Explorer usually means
File Explorer is the Windows shell component that opens folders, displays files, generates thumbnails and previews, handles right-click menus, and provides access to Windows Search. A delay can therefore originate in storage, indexing, a preview or thumbnail handler, a cloud-sync or antivirus integration, a damaged system component, or another process consuming resources. Restarting Explorer can clear a temporary hang, but it cannot repair a failing drive, a damaged search index, or a problematic extension.

First note the exact symptom. Does Explorer start slowly everywhere, or only when you open one folder? Is navigation slow, is the search box slow, do thumbnails take a long time, or does the right-click menu pause? Also note when the problem began: after a Windows update, after installing software, or without an obvious change. These observations prevent you from applying a disk repair to what is actually an indexing or extension problem.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Observed scope or operation | Resource signal to watch | Direction to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Every folder or the entire desktop is sluggish | Disk, CPU, or memory remains high | Storage contention, malware, a runaway process, or general resource pressure |
| Only the search box or search results are slow | Disk activity stays high while indexing runs | Windows Search locations, file types, or an unhealthy index |
| Folders containing pictures or videos load slowly | CPU rises while previews or thumbnails appear | Preview and thumbnail generation or an extension |
| Opening a folder is quick but right-clicking is slow | CPU may spike briefly | A third-party context-menu integration |
| One particular folder is slow | Usually a local spike rather than system-wide load | That folder’s view, files, previews, sync status, or an extension |
These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a single cause. Reproduce the delay while checking Task Manager so you can test the most plausible explanation first.

1. Install pending updates, restart, and retest
Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance places checking for updates and restarting among the first actions. An update can replace a faulty component, and a restart clears temporary process and resource states.
- Save open work.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates. Install all available updates and follow any restart request.
- After Windows starts again, open several ordinary folders and repeat the operation that was slow.
Do not judge the result from the first folder opened immediately after sign-in if Windows is still completing background work. Wait briefly, then test the same folders and operation you recorded. If Windows Update reports that no updates are available, continue with the process and resource checks below.
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s free support period on October 14, 2025. Microsoft states that after that date it no longer receives free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. On a Windows 10 installation now, Windows Update may therefore have no new free fix for an Explorer problem; this does not identify the cause of the slowdown. Keep the support status in mind when deciding whether continued troubleshooting or a supported Windows release is appropriate for the device.

A stuck shell process can make every folder appear broken even when the underlying files are fine. Restarting Windows Explorer is quick and does not remove files.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer.
- Choose Restart. The taskbar and open Explorer windows may disappear briefly and then return.
- Reopen the affected folder and repeat the slow action.
This is a process reset, not a repair. If Explorer becomes slow again immediately, or only one operation remains slow, continue rather than repeatedly restarting it. A recurring delay points toward indexing, storage, resource pressure, or an extension.

3. Check free space and remove temporary data
Windows needs working space for updates, caches, indexing, and normal file operations. A nearly full system drive can make several operations contend for the same storage even when Explorer itself is not damaged.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Inspect the bar for the system drive, normally C:, and note whether it is close to full.
- For a guided view, open Settings > System > Storage. Review temporary files and categories consuming space.
- Use the built-in cleanup controls to remove temporary and unnecessary files you recognise. You can also open Disk Cleanup from the Start menu and select the system drive.
- Restart Windows if cleanup removed a large amount of temporary data, then test Explorer again.
Review the deletion list rather than selecting items blindly. Personal downloads, saved installers, or files needed for recovery should be moved or backed up before removal. Cleanup is a capacity check and maintenance step; it does not prove that low space caused the delay, and deleting files is not a guaranteed performance fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Measure the bottleneck in Task Manager
Use Task Manager while reproducing the delay instead of guessing. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select More details if necessary, and keep the Processes and Performance views visible. Open the same folder, search, preview, or context menu that normally hangs.
If Disk is near 100 percent
Persistent disk use near 100 percent suggests storage or indexing contention, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. Look at the processes sorted by the Disk column. Windows Search indexing, a backup or sync process, an update, an antivirus scan, or another application may be responsible. Let a clearly identified scheduled task finish when practical; stop only software you recognise and can safely close. If the disk remains saturated with no obvious workload, continue with the indexing and storage-health checks.
If CPU is high
High CPU while thumbnails or previews are being generated can point toward a handler for those file types. High CPU during every Explorer action may instead indicate compression, antivirus inspection, a runaway application, or a damaged component. Sort by CPU, note the process name and whether the spike occurs only for one folder, and avoid ending a process you do not recognise as a safe application. Repeating the test with preview and details panes disabled helps distinguish display handlers from general CPU pressure.

If memory is under pressure
Use the Memory column and the Performance view to see whether available memory falls sharply while Explorer is slow. Close unneeded applications and browser windows, then repeat the test. If the delay returns only when a particular program is open, that program may be contributing to overall pressure. Memory usage alone does not establish that Explorer is defective.
Record what you observe: the operation, the busiest resource, and the process at the top of the list. This record makes the next steps targeted and gives useful evidence if you later need support or hardware service.
5. Check for malware and heavy startup processes
Microsoft recommends running a malware scan and monitoring heavy processes because malicious or runaway software can reduce PC performance. On Windows 10, open your installed Windows security controls and run a scan using the options available to you. Keep security software updated as far as your Windows 10 installation permits.
Also inspect startup load in Task Manager:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the Startup tab.
- Review applications with a high startup impact that you do not need immediately after sign-in.
- Disable only a program you recognise and can start manually later. Do not disable security, hardware, or accessibility components merely because their names are unfamiliar.
- Restart and retest Explorer.
If a scan reports a threat, follow the security product’s removal and restart instructions before judging Explorer’s speed. If no threat is found, that result does not rule out an extension, indexing problem, or storage fault; proceed using the symptom and Task Manager evidence.
6. Test and repair Windows Search indexing
Windows Search indexing tracks file changes so File Explorer can search locations quickly. Microsoft describes it as the service File Explorer uses to access and track changes to files. Indexing can consume disk and CPU while it processes a large set of locations, and a damaged or continuously busy index can make search and some folder operations feel stuck.

Reduce unnecessary indexing
- Open Settings > Search > Searching Windows.
- Select Advanced indexing options.
- Review the indexed locations and remove folders you never search, such as large archives or temporary work areas, when they are not needed for search.
- Review indexed file types and exclude types that do not need content indexing. Keep file-name indexing for locations where you still need ordinary searches.
- Allow the service time to settle, then repeat the same search or folder test.
Changes to locations and file types can trigger additional indexing, so a short period of disk activity afterward is expected. If the index is continuously busy or search results remain incorrect, use the Windows Search troubleshooter available in Windows settings.
Rebuild an unhealthy index
From Advanced indexing options, open the indexing control and choose the option to rebuild the index. Rebuilding removes the existing index database and creates it again from the locations you selected. It can temporarily increase disk use and search results may be incomplete until the process finishes. Do not interrupt the process simply because the first search is empty.
When diagnosing persistent indexing performance, Microsoft also advises checking the size of the on-disk index database. An unexpectedly large database, constant growth, or a database that repeatedly fails to complete can support the conclusion that indexing is involved. Rebuilding is reversible in the sense that it recreates the database; it does not delete your documents.

If Explorer remains slow and other Windows components also misbehave, use Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance. Treat these commands as advanced repairs: save work, connect the PC to reliable power, and open an elevated Command Prompt by searching for Command Prompt, right-clicking it, and selecting Run as administrator.
Use Microsoft’s documented order and syntax:
- At the elevated prompt, run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to complete. - Then run
sfc /scannow. Do not close the window while verification is running. - Restart Windows when both commands have finished.
- Retest the same Explorer operation and check whether other component errors have also cleared.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC relies on; SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged versions when possible. The commands can take time, and the percentage display may pause. If either command reports that it could not complete or could not repair files, record the exact message and follow Microsoft’s corresponding recovery guidance rather than repeatedly running random variants. Do not download replacement system files from unofficial sources.

8. Isolate folder views, previews, and third-party add-ons
When only one folder or one Explorer operation is slow, isolate the display and integration features instead of changing the whole system.
Test a simpler folder view
- Open a basic folder containing a small number of ordinary documents.
- Compare it with the slow folder. Note whether the slow folder contains many pictures, videos, compressed archives, network locations, or cloud-synchronised files.
- In Explorer’s View controls, temporarily switch to a simple list or details view.
- Turn off the Preview pane and Details pane while testing. These panes can invoke handlers that do not run in a plain list.
- Repeat the operation, then turn features back on one at a time to identify which change affects the delay.
Check integrations
Third-party context-menu handlers, thumbnail providers, cloud-sync clients, and antivirus integrations can add work to Explorer. If right-clicking is slow, test a folder with those integrations unlikely to appear. If thumbnails are the trigger, compare the same files in a list view. If a cloud-synchronised location is slow but a local folder is not, pause or inspect the sync client according to its own documentation.
Disable or uninstall an integration only when you recognise it and know how to restore it. Re-enable items one at a time after testing; changing several at once hides the responsible extension. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not identify one universal third-party culprit, so isolation is a diagnostic method rather than proof that any particular vendor is at fault.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →9. Escalate when storage may be failing
Back up important data before disk repairs, registry changes, a Windows reset, or a reinstall. A slow Explorer window accompanied by clicking sounds from a drive, read/write errors, disappearing files, or repeated crashes deserves storage-health investigation rather than repeated cleanup.
- Copy irreplaceable documents to a separate, known-good destination before running repair operations.
- Check whether errors occur in multiple applications, not just Explorer.
- Use the storage manufacturer’s or Windows’ documented health and error-checking tools, and record the results.
- Replace failing storage only when evidence supports that decision; a slow search index or extension should not lead to unnecessary hardware replacement.
If the drive is unstable, minimise writes and seek professional recovery help for data you cannot replace. Do not edit the registry, reset Windows, or reinstall while an unverified backup is your only copy.
A practical troubleshooting order
Follow this sequence so each step is low risk and informative:
- Install available updates, restart, and retest.
- Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager.
- Check free space in This PC and Settings > System > Storage; use Disk Cleanup for recognised temporary data.
- Watch Disk, CPU, and Memory in Task Manager while reproducing the delay.
- Run a malware scan and review heavy startup processes.
- Reduce or rebuild Windows Search indexing when search or indexing activity matches the symptom.
- Run DISM and then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt if Windows components appear damaged.
- Disable preview and details panes and isolate context-menu, thumbnail, sync, or antivirus integrations when one folder or operation is affected.
- Back up data and investigate storage health when physical or read/write symptoms appear.
Stop after a step that resolves the measured problem; changing additional settings can make the original cause harder to identify. If Explorer is still slow after these checks, keep your symptom notes, Task Manager observations, command results, and any disk-health evidence together for a qualified technician or Microsoft support channel that is available for your Windows edition.
