First check the spelling of the code. Microsoft documents 0x80004005 (with two zeros after 0x) for unspecified mail, Outlook, and synchronization failures. 0x8004005 (with one fewer zero) is a separate Windows Update scanning error. The correct fix depends on which code appears, which mail app you use, and whether the problem affects sign-in, sending, receiving, or folder synchronization.
If the message comes from the old Windows Mail, Calendar, or People apps, repeated repairs will not restore mail service: Microsoft ended support for those apps on December 31, 2024. Move to new Outlook or Outlook.com, exporting any local-only messages and calendar data first. The sections below cover that migration and the appropriate troubleshooting for new Outlook, classic Outlook, Windows Live Mail, and POP/IMAP accounts.

Also note the product name in the window. “Windows Mail” usually means the retired Mail, Calendar, and People package. “Outlook” can mean new Outlook or classic Outlook, which have different repair controls. Windows Live Mail and other older clients commonly use POP or IMAP and store some data locally.

Windows Mail, Calendar, and People: migrate instead of repairing
Microsoft’s current support notice says support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People ended on December 31, 2024. Those apps can no longer send or receive email or events. An app reset, re-registration command, or repeated account-password entry cannot restore a service that has been retired.
1. Open the migration prompt
- Launch the old Windows Mail app.
- When its migration dialog appears, select Open Outlook.
- If Outlook is not installed, choose the option to download new Outlook from the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft, work, school, or other supported account and allow the initial synchronization to finish.
Microsoft recommends new Outlook or Outlook.com. If your organization controls the account, its administrator may need to approve the new client or provide the correct sign-in method.
2. Export local data before abandoning the old app
Mail that already exists on the provider’s server normally becomes available again after you add the account to the replacement client. Local-only data is different. Microsoft’s export guidance identifies .eml files for POP/IMAP messages and .ics files for calendar events.

.icsfiles. - Copy the exported files to a separate folder or external backup before removing the old account or app.
- Import the messages and events into new Outlook or another client that supports those formats.
Do not assume that a message visible in the old app is still on the server. Export first when you are unsure whether the account was configured for POP download, local folders, or server synchronization.
New Outlook: resolve a 0x80004005 folder-sync failure
Microsoft recorded an incident in which manually updating a mailbox folder produced “Task ‘ ‘ reported error (0x80004005): The operation failed.” The service-side fix was rolled out in server builds greater than 15.21.0155.000, and Microsoft marks the incident fixed.
Check whether the issue is already fixed for your account
- Update new Outlook through the Microsoft Store or the update control inside Outlook, then restart the app.
- Open Outlook’s account or connection information and record the server build shown in Outlook Connection Status.
- If the build is greater than
15.21.0155.000, close and reopen Outlook, then try the folder synchronization again. - If you remain on an older server build, or the failure affects a high-impact mailbox, contact Microsoft Support and include the exact code, account type, affected folder, and server-build information.
A successful web sign-in while Outlook fails points toward the client or service path rather than an incorrect password. If web access also fails, resolve the account or provider issue first.
Classic Outlook: check the connection, add-ins, profile, and PST
The following sequence applies to classic desktop Outlook, not the retired Windows Mail app. Stop when the error disappears; changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.

- Open a browser and sign in to the mailbox’s webmail service.
- Send a small test message to yourself and confirm that it arrives.
- Check that Windows has an active internet connection and that a VPN, proxy, or security gateway is not blocking the connection.
If webmail cannot send or receive, contact the mail provider or administrator rather than repairing Outlook.
2. Remove a large or failing attachment from the send queue
A large attachment can prevent the entire send/receive cycle from completing. Open the Outbox, move the queued message to Drafts or delete the attachment, and retry with a small message. Messages that remain stuck after Outlook is restarted should be handled while Outlook is offline so they cannot immediately re-enter the queue.
3. Use Safe Mode to isolate an add-in
- Press
Windows key + R, enteroutlook.exe /safe, and press Enter. - Run a send/receive test.
- If the error disappears, open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, select COM Add-ins and choose Go.
- Clear add-ins one at a time, restart Outlook normally after each change, and identify the one that restores normal synchronization.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic comparison; it does not repair the account itself. Re-enable add-ins that are not involved once testing is complete.

4. Repair or recreate the Outlook profile
In classic Outlook, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the affected account, and use the available Repair option. If repair is unavailable or does not help, close Outlook and open Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles. Add a new profile, configure the account again, and set it as the profile to use. Keep the original profile until you have verified that all required folders and messages are present.

5. Check a damaged PST with Inbox Repair Tool
For accounts that use a local Outlook Data File (.pst), close Outlook and run Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, commonly named SCANPST.EXE. Select the affected PST, scan it, and choose the repair option. Make a copy of the PST before repairing, because the tool changes the file. This step is for PST integrity problems; it will not correct a provider outage or an invalid server password.
Windows Live Mail or another legacy POP/IMAP client
In older clients, 0x80004005 is an unspecified operation failure rather than a single, universal cause. Microsoft community guidance describes several possibilities, including POP3 authentication incompatibility, incorrect permissions on the local Windows Live Mail store folder, and one problematic message preventing the rest of the mailbox from downloading.
1. Prove that the account works on the provider’s website
- Sign in to webmail with the same address and password.
- Confirm that new messages appear and send a test message.
- If webmail fails, recover the account or contact the provider before changing the desktop client.
2. Verify every POP/IMAP setting with the provider
Compare the incoming and outgoing server names, port numbers, encryption method, and authentication requirement with the provider’s current instructions. Do not copy settings from a different account or assume that an old password is still accepted. Some providers require a separate app password or have disabled older authentication methods; only the provider can confirm what its server currently permits.
3. Check the local store folder
Find the client’s message-store location and confirm that your Windows account can read and write there. A folder copied from another computer, restored from backup, or protected by restrictive permissions can allow the app to open while preventing downloads or database updates. Make a backup before changing permissions, and grant access only to the account that needs it.

4. Look for a message blocking retrieval
If webmail shows new messages but the desktop client stops partway through receiving, move or delete the newest suspect message in webmail, then try receiving again. A malformed message or oversized attachment can block every message behind it. Preserve a copy in webmail first if the message may be needed for records.
5. Plan a migration
Windows Live Mail and similar clients are legacy software. Once the account is working, export messages as .eml files and calendar events as .ics files where applicable, then move to a supported client. Continuing to rely on an unmaintained app leaves you dependent on authentication and server behavior that may change without a client update.
If the code is actually 0x8004005: fix Windows Update, not mail
Microsoft documents 0x8004005 as a Windows Update scanning error that can occur when required DLLs are not registered correctly or when a firewall blocks HTTPS/SSL. This procedure is unrelated to Windows Mail or Outlook.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately, waiting for it to complete:
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update again and check whether scanning completes.
Only use an elevated Command Prompt for these commands. If registration reports an error, record the exact message instead of substituting random DLL files or downloading replacements from unofficial sites. A firewall or managed-network policy may still need correction after the DLLs are registered.

- Cannot sign in anywhere: recover the account, verify the password or app-password requirement, and contact the provider or administrator.
- Webmail works, but old Windows Mail cannot send or receive: migrate; support for that app ended on December 31, 2024.
- New Outlook fails only when refreshing a folder: update, check the server build, and escalate if it is still below the fixed rollout or the issue remains.
- Classic Outlook fails only with Outlook running normally: test Safe Mode and disable the responsible add-in.
- Classic Outlook fails for one profile: repair or recreate the profile, keeping the original until data is verified.
- Receiving stops after one message in a POP/IMAP client: investigate the blocking message and confirm server authentication and settings.
- The screen mentions Windows Update and shows 0x8004005: use the three DLL-registration commands and restart.
Protect mail and calendar data during troubleshooting
- Export local POP/IMAP messages to
.emland calendar events to.icsbefore deleting an old profile or app. - Back up PST files before running Inbox Repair Tool.
- Keep the original Outlook profile or local store until the replacement client displays the folders and messages you need.
- Record the exact code, app name, account type, affected operation, and any server-build number before contacting support.
For this title’s two similarly spelled codes, the safe order is therefore: verify the digits, identify the app, preserve local data, then apply the matching migration, account, Outlook, or Windows Update procedure.
