The title’s 0X080070057 spelling contains an extra zero; 0x80070057 is the code used in Microsoft’s references.
Restart first, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, repair the Windows image with DISM and protected system files with SFC, then reset the Windows Update cache if necessary. Also check storage, VPN and security-software interference, startup conflicts, and whether a work-managed device is controlled by policy.

What error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft identifies 0x80070057 as E_INVALIDARG: “One or more arguments are not valid.” Microsoft’s Open Specifications also describe the related system error as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, “The parameter is incorrect.” In Windows Update, that wording does not identify one broken file, service or update. The same HRESULT can appear in different Windows components, so the failed KB update, Windows edition and build, and the point at which installation stopped are important clues.
Microsoft Support lists 0x80070057 among update-installation failures and associates it with corrupted files or incorrect system configurations. That makes component-store damage, a damaged update cache, insufficient storage, policy restrictions and software or network interference reasonable troubleshooting paths, but none is proven merely by seeing the code.

Microsoft Support describes the code group as “0x80070057 or 0x80080005: Corrupted files or incorrect system configurations.”
Use the steps below in order. The early checks are reversible and affect little system state; the cache reset is more disruptive; external installation media is conditional rather than a direct repair for the HRESULT.
Record the failure before changing anything
Write down the details shown in Windows Update and Windows Update history. This prevents a generic code from hiding the real scope of the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Exact code: confirm that the displayed value is
0x80070057, not a visually similar code. - Update identity: record the KB number, feature-upgrade name or other description that failed.
- Windows details: note the Windows edition and build from Settings > System > About.
- Failure stage: note whether the update failed while checking, downloading, installing or restarting.
- History: open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and record any neighboring failures.
If the same code appears in a non-update operation, such as another Windows component, use that operation’s context as well; Windows Update procedures may not address a failure outside the servicing path.
Choose the least disruptive fix first
| Method | Risk and disruption | Required privileges | Changes cached update data? | External media |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and Windows Update troubleshooter | Low; built-in diagnostics and automatic corrections | Standard Settings access | No intentional cache deletion | Not required |
| DISM followed by SFC | Low to moderate; repairs the image and protected files | Administrator Command Prompt | No intentional cache deletion | Not required |
| Stop Windows Update and clear SoftwareDistribution contents | More disruptive; removes downloaded update cache data | Administrator access to Services and the Windows folder | Yes | Not required |
| USB installation or recovery media | Conditional; introduces an external installation or recovery path | Administrator access and suitable media | Not necessarily | Yes |
Do not jump to registry edits or delete unrelated folders. Those actions can create a new servicing problem before the documented checks have been exhausted.
1. Restart Windows and run the update troubleshooter
Restart completely
- Save open work and choose Start > Power > Restart.
- After Windows returns to the desktop, reconnect the normal network and open Windows Update.
- Select Settings > Windows Update, choose Check for updates, and retry the failed update if it is offered.
A restart clears temporary service state and completes any pending reboot operation. It does not remove the update history or repair corrupted files, so continue if the code returns.
Run the current Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to inspect update services, configuration and common inconsistencies.
- Apply a suggested correction when you understand what it changes, restart if prompted, and try Windows Update again.
Microsoft says this troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while updates are downloading or installing. The labels can differ on older Windows releases, but the Windows Update troubleshooter remains the relevant built-in diagnostic.
2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use DISM first because it repairs the Windows image that supplies the files SFC checks. Run SFC only after DISM reports completion.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Press Enter and wait for the command to finish. The /Online switch targets the Windows installation currently running; /Cleanup-image checks the component store; /Restorehealth repairs detected corruption. Do not close the window or start SFC while DISM is still running.

Run SFC after DISM completes
sfc /scannow
Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent and display its result. SFC checks protected Windows system files against the repaired component store. Record the final message, including whether it found and repaired files or could not complete the requested operation.
Restart and retry
- Close Command Prompt.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Retry the specific KB or feature update you recorded earlier.
DISM and SFC can correct image or protected-file corruption, but they cannot resolve every cause of an invalid-parameter error. If the same code appears, keep the result messages for escalation and continue with the update-state checks.
3. Reset the Windows Update service and cache
A damaged download or inconsistent service state can make Windows reuse invalid update data. Resetting the cache removes downloaded update files so Windows can obtain them again. This is more disruptive than the troubleshooter or DISM/SFC, and it changes cached update data rather than repairing the underlying Windows image.
Stop the Windows Update service
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. If it is already stopped, leave it stopped for the next step.
Clear only the SoftwareDistribution contents
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the contents inside that folder, not the surrounding
C:Windowsdirectory. - Delete the contents. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system files.
The folder contains update-download and update-history state used by the Windows Update client. Clearing its contents means Windows may need to download update files again. It does not uninstall Windows or remove personal documents.
Start the service and retry
- Return to
services.msc. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and retry the recorded update.
On a work-managed PC, a local service reset may be temporary or blocked by organizational policy, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) settings or management software. Ask the administrator before changing update state on that device.
4. Check storage before retrying
Insufficient free space can prevent a download, staging operation or feature upgrade from completing cleanly. Open Settings > System > Storage and review the system drive’s available space. Remove or move only data you recognize, and empty temporary locations through Windows’ own Storage settings rather than deleting arbitrary folders under C:Windows.

Microsoft notes that a device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive to update. A USB drive is therefore an optional capacity or installation-media path, not a direct fix for 0x80070057. Keep the drive connected when Windows specifically requests external storage, and follow the on-screen path for the update or recovery operation.
When external media is appropriate
- Windows reports that the internal drive lacks enough space for the update.
- An upgrade or recovery workflow explicitly asks for removable storage.
- You need installation or recovery media after normal servicing steps fail and you have backed up important files.
Do not assume any USB drive will solve the error. The required capacity, formatting and role depend on the particular update or recovery workflow; the available evidence does not establish one universal size.
5. Remove network and software interference from the test
Temporarily disconnect a VPN
Disconnect a VPN, retry Windows Update on the ordinary connection, and reconnect the VPN afterward. A VPN can change routing or filtering in a way that interferes with update downloads. This test does not prove the VPN is defective; it only separates the VPN path from the Windows Update path.

Consider third-party security software
Third-party security software can block an update service, download or restart operation. Use its documented temporary-disable procedure only for the diagnostic attempt, keep the period brief, and re-enable protection immediately after testing. Windows Update troubleshooting is not a reason to leave security software disabled.

Use a clean restart when startup software may conflict
If the update works after nonessential startup programs are prevented from loading, a background program is a likely conflict. Use Windows’ clean-startup diagnostic procedure for your edition, test the update, and then restore normal startup so you do not leave unrelated services disabled. Keep a list of each change so you can reverse it accurately.
These checks are especially useful when DISM, SFC and a cache reset complete successfully but the same update still fails at the download or installation stage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Check policy and managed-device restrictions
On a company, school or otherwise managed computer, Windows Update may be governed by local policy, mobile-device management or WSUS. Those settings can specify which updates are offered, which server supplies them and when installation is allowed. A local reset cannot override an administrator’s policy reliably.
- Ask the organization’s administrator whether the KB is approved and whether a maintenance window is required.
- Provide the exact code, KB number, Windows edition/build and update-history entry.
- Do not change registry values or policy settings supplied by an online guide unless the administrator directs you.
Personal PCs can also have remnants of previous management software. If a device was formerly enrolled in an organization, resolve that enrollment before treating a policy-controlled failure as ordinary home troubleshooting.
7. Verify the result and preserve evidence
- Restart after the final repair or cache reset.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.
- Install the specific KB or feature upgrade you recorded, rather than assuming any later update tests the same failure.
- Open Update history and confirm whether the entry now shows successful installation.
- If it fails again, capture the new timestamp and exact code; a changed code can indicate that the original blocker was removed.
Keep the DISM completion message, SFC result, Windows edition/build, KB number and update-history details together. This evidence is more useful to Microsoft or organizational support than a statement that “Windows Update is broken.”
8. Escalate without making the system harder to repair
If the error persists after the restart, troubleshooter, DISM/SFC, cache reset and blocker checks, use Microsoft’s upgrade and installation error guidance or your organization’s support channel. Tell support which steps were completed and provide the recorded evidence.
A persistent 0x80070057 can depend on the exact KB, Windows build, disk condition, servicing policy or managed-device configuration. At that point, changing registry values, deleting additional Windows folders or repeatedly forcing the same update can destroy useful state without addressing the cause. A repair-installation or recovery path may be appropriate, but it should be selected for the specific edition and build and performed after backing up important files.
