First verify the digits in Windows Update history. Microsoft classifies 0x80004005 as an unspecified Windows installation or upgrade error, while 0x800004005 is documented for a different, legacy UI Automation timeout on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. For the usual Windows Update failure, run the version-specific troubleshooter, restart, reset the Windows Update download cache, and then repair system files. The procedures below cover Windows 11 and Windows 10, with a separate explanation for the legacy code.

Confirm the exact error before changing anything

The extra zero in 0x800004005 is significant. A mistyped or truncated code can send you to the wrong repair procedure, so copy the value rather than relying on memory.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Open Update history and expand the failed update. Record the hexadecimal code, the update’s KB number, and whether the failure occurred during downloading, installation, or a version upgrade.
  4. Press Windows+R, enter winver, and note the Windows edition and build. This matters because the Settings paths and support status differ by version.
Code shown What Microsoft documents What to do
0x80004005 “Unspecified error” in Microsoft’s upgrade and installation troubleshooting table. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, reset downloaded update files, check the Windows Update service, and repair possible file corruption with SFC. A clean boot or Safe Mode can help isolate interference.
0x800004005 A legacy UI Automation timeout that can occur while searching a node with many descendants on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Do not install a UI Automation hotfix or change its registry timeout merely because the digits resemble a Windows Update code. Confirm the value and treat a modern Windows Update occurrence as a possible transcription or display issue.

A 2018 Microsoft Q&A answer associated the longer code with checking for corrupted or missing system files, but that was community guidance rather than a definitive mapping. The official distinction above is the safer basis for choosing a fix.

Prepare a reversible troubleshooting session

The first remedies below change settings or remove only re-downloadable update files. Before you start, save open work and back up files that matter. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, policy may prevent service changes or feature upgrades; contact the administrator instead of forcing a change.

  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
  • Keep the exact KB number, error code, Windows edition, and build in a note. You will need them if escalation is required.
  • Connect the computer to reliable power and leave the network connected while a troubleshooter or system-file scan runs.
  • Close applications that may restart the computer or install software during the update attempt.
  • Do not delete the entire C:Windows directory or registry entries unrelated to a documented step. The cache reset later removes contents of one update-download folder, not Windows itself.

Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

Use the path for the installed Windows version. Current Windows 11 builds may open Microsoft’s automated Get Help troubleshooter after you choose Run; follow its prompts and allow it to apply a proposed repair.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings and select System.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Complete the diagnostic questions. If it reports a repair, let it apply the repair rather than closing the window.
  5. Restart Windows even if the troubleshooter says no problem was found.
  6. Return to Settings > Windows Update and choose Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings and select Update & Security.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and complete the prompts.
  4. Restart the PC, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

If the same code returns, note whether the failure is now at download or installation. That stage determines whether resetting the local download cache is the most useful next step.

Check that the Windows Update service is running

An update cannot download or install if its Windows Update service is stopped or disabled. Checking the service is less disruptive than deleting its cache, so do it before the reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the list, find Windows Update.
  3. Read the Status column. If it is stopped, right-click the entry and choose Start. If it is running, choose Restart only if the service appears stuck.
  4. Open the service’s Properties and check that its startup setting has not been deliberately set to Disabled. Do not change an organization-controlled setting without approval.
  5. Close the Services window, restart Windows, and try Check for updates again.

If the service starts but the same download or installation fails, continue with the cache reset. A successful service start does not prove that files already stored in the update cache are usable.

Reset the Windows Update download cache

Windows stores downloaded update packages and temporary metadata in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Microsoft’s reset procedure stops the Windows Update service, deletes the contents of that folder, and starts the service again. Windows will recreate the needed folders and download a fresh copy. This does not roll back Windows or remove personal documents, but an update that was already downloaded will have to download again.

  1. Save your work and close programs. Restarting after the reset is recommended.
  2. Press Windows+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open so you can start it again.
  4. Open File Explorer and paste C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution into the address bar.
  5. Select the contents of that folder and delete them. Delete the contents, not the parent SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before retrying.
  6. Return to services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  7. Restart Windows. Open the Windows Update page for your version and choose Check for updates.

Expect the first scan after this operation to take longer because Windows is rebuilding its local update data. If the error appears immediately with no download activity, proceed to system-file checks rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

Repair Windows system files with System File Checker

Microsoft lists System File Checker (SFC) for the unspecified-error class represented by 0x80004005. SFC compares protected Windows files with their expected versions and replaces damaged copies when it can.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu, type Terminal or Command Prompt, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  3. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Interrupting the scan can leave the repair incomplete.
  4. Read the final message. If Windows repaired files, restart and retry Windows Update. If it found no integrity violations, continue to the clean-boot or Safe Mode isolation steps.
  5. If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation, restart and run the scan again from Safe Mode. Record the exact result for support if it still fails.

Microsoft’s broader Windows file-corruption guidance covers additional servicing diagnostics when SFC cannot repair the component store. Use that documented guidance for your specific Windows build rather than copying an unrelated registry fix from a forum.

Use Safe Mode to separate Windows from third-party interference

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. It is useful when a security utility, shell extension, startup program, or other third-party component interferes with servicing. It is a diagnostic environment, not a guarantee that Windows Update itself will run there.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
  2. Under advanced startup, choose Restart now. You can also hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Start menu.
  3. After the blue recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
  5. In Safe Mode, run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt and inspect whether the failure disappears when third-party startup components are absent.
  6. Restart normally before attempting the update again.

If Windows Update succeeds only after Safe Mode testing, use a clean boot to identify the interfering service while keeping normal Windows functionality available.

Try a clean boot when normal startup conflicts with servicing

Microsoft includes a clean boot among the troubleshooting steps for 0x80004005. It starts Windows with Microsoft services and essential drivers while temporarily preventing other services and startup applications from loading. This is reversible, but write down changes so you can restore the original startup state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Do not disable Microsoft services before selecting the hide option.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  4. In Task Manager, disable enabled third-party startup items. Close Task Manager.
  5. Select OK in System Configuration and restart when prompted.
  6. Run Windows Update. If it succeeds, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting item is identified.
  7. When testing is complete, open msconfig, choose Normal startup on the General tab, apply the change, and restart.

Do not leave the computer permanently in a diagnostic startup state; some applications and security controls expect their services to load during a normal boot.

When the failure happens during a feature upgrade

0x80004005 is described by Microsoft as an unspecified error in upgrade and installation scenarios, not only in ordinary monthly updates. If the failing entry is a feature upgrade, use the same sequence but capture additional context:

  • Record the Windows version you are upgrading from and the target version shown in Windows Update.
  • Note the exact point of failure: preparation, download, restart, installation percentage, or rollback.
  • Run the troubleshooter and SFC before repeating the upgrade. Repeatedly restarting an upgrade without correcting a damaged cache or system file usually produces the same result.
  • Use a clean boot if the failure occurs only during the graphical upgrade process and disappears in Safe Mode testing.

Keep the update’s KB number and build information with your notes. Those identifiers let support distinguish a servicing-stack problem from a single update package failure.

Do not apply the legacy 0x800004005 UI Automation fix to Windows Update

Microsoft’s legacy article for 0x800004005 concerns an IUIAutomation method timing out while searching a node with many descendants. The documented environment is Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, and the remedy involves a specific hotfix and a registry timeout setting for that automation workload. It is not a general Windows Update repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Update history really shows the longer code on a modern installation, take a screenshot, copy the surrounding message, and verify the digits in another display of the failure. Do not download the old hotfix or create the registry value unless Microsoft support confirms that your operating system and automation scenario match the legacy article. A community answer that suggested checking system files does not establish that the code has the same meaning in every Windows release.

Use the result of each step to choose what comes next

What you observe Most appropriate next action Risk and reversibility
The troubleshooter reports a repair and the code disappears after restart. Leave the repaired settings in place and confirm the update completes. Low; the built-in repair and restart are normally reversible.
The update fails while downloading, and Windows Update service is running. Stop the service, clear the contents of SoftwareDistribution, restart the service, and retry. Moderate; the package must be downloaded again, but personal files are not removed.
SFC reports repaired files. Restart before trying Windows Update so repaired files are loaded. Low; SFC operates on protected system files.
The error appears only during normal startup. Test Safe Mode, then perform a clean boot to isolate a third-party service or startup item. Reversible, but restore normal startup after testing.
The digits are exactly 0x800004005 on Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 in an automation application. Follow the legacy UI Automation documentation for that application, not the Windows Update cache procedure. Use only the hotfix and registry setting documented for that matching scenario.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Escalate after the troubleshooter, cache reset, system-file check, and an appropriate startup isolation test have all failed, or sooner if the PC is managed and you lack administrator authority. Include:

  • The exact hexadecimal code, including the number of zeros.
  • The failed update’s KB number and whether it was a quality update, feature upgrade, or another package.
  • Windows edition, version, and build from winver.
  • The date and time of the latest failure and the stage at which it occurred.
  • The final SFC message and which built-in troubleshooting steps you completed.
  • Whether the failure changes in Safe Mode or a clean boot.

These details let Microsoft support or an administrator request the appropriate diagnostic information for a deployment failure instead of repeating generic cache deletions. Do not substitute the legacy UI Automation hotfix simply because a support page contains a similar-looking number.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 machine can still display an update error, but the end-of-support date affects what updates and assistance are available. Confirm the edition and lifecycle status before spending time on a feature upgrade, and consider Microsoft’s supported upgrade options for the device.
