Windows Update error 0x80070032 means “the request is not supported.” It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis: Windows may be dealing with damaged update files, a component-store problem, or a package that does not apply to your installed edition or build. The safest solution is to verify the update context, run Windows’ own troubleshooter, repair the image and system files, and only then reset update caches or install a matching package manually.
The sequence below is designed to preserve your files and avoid forcing an incompatible update. Stop when an update installs successfully; later steps carry more risk and require more evidence.

What error 0x80070032 means
Microsoft Q&A describes hexadecimal code 0x80070032 as “the request is not supported.” In Windows Update, that message can appear when the servicing system cannot use the request in its current state. Common possibilities include a damaged or missing update file, corruption in the Windows component store, or an update that was built for a different edition, architecture, language, servicing level, or build.

For that reason, the code alone cannot tell you whether the cache, the operating-system image, or the update package is at fault. Do not treat it as proof that Windows is infected, and do not download a random replacement ISO or registry cleaner.

Record the update context first
Collecting the exact context prevents you from applying a package that Windows cannot support. Before changing services or deleting cache contents:
- Press Windows+R, type
winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows edition, version, build number, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit (or another architecture shown by your edition). - Open Settings → Windows Update and write down the failing KB number, if one is shown.
- Note where the process stops: while downloading, while installing at a percentage, or during a restart.
- If you use an Insider build, open Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program and record the channel. A skipped or out-of-sequence build can make a later package inapplicable.
- Check that the update is intended for your exact edition, architecture, language, and build family before attempting a manual installation.
Keep this information available if you need to consult Microsoft support or compare a package in Microsoft Update Catalog.
Follow the low-risk repair sequence
1. Restart and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Save open work and restart Windows.
- After signing in, open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to complete any checks or repairs it offers.
- Restart once more, return to Settings → Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Retry the failed update once.
Microsoft says this built-in troubleshooter can resolve errors encountered while downloading or installing updates. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly clicking retry; repeated attempts do not correct a damaged component store or an inapplicable package.

2. Repair the Windows image with DISM
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the Windows image that servicing uses. Run it before System File Checker.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - At the elevated prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress can pause for a while.
- A successful run can display wording such as
The restore operation completed successfully
orThe operation completed successfully
.
DISM repairs the image; it does not by itself install the pending update. If DISM reports that it could not complete the repair, record the exact message and do not jump straight to a random ISO. The advanced repair-media branch later in this guide is safer when the image cannot be repaired normally.
3. Repair protected system files with SFC
After DISM completes, use System File Checker against the running installation:
- Keep the elevated Command Prompt open, or reopen it with Run as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows, then try Windows Update again.
The order matters: DISM repairs the underlying image first, and SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source. If the update succeeds after the restart, no cache reset or manual package installation is needed.
4. Reset Windows Update components only after the repairs
A damaged download cache or servicing database can keep producing 0x80070032 even after system files are repaired. Microsoft’s reset procedure stops the update-related services, renames or clears the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 caches, starts the services again, and retries Windows Update.

Use the current Microsoft reset instructions for your specific Windows version rather than copying an unverified script from a forum. The exact service list and commands can differ by release. If you perform the reset manually:
- Sign in with an administrator account and close Settings, the Microsoft Update Catalog, and any installer windows.
- Open the Microsoft-documented reset procedure for your Windows version and stop every update-related service it names. You can also use the Services console (
services.msc) to stop a service when the procedure directs you to do so. - In File Explorer, go to
C:Windowsand rename theSoftwareDistributionfolder as directed. Then openC:WindowsSystem32and renameCatroot2. Renaming preserves the old folders so they can be restored if a support technician needs them. - Return to the Microsoft procedure and restart the services it named.
- Restart Windows, select Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, and try the same KB once.
Do not delete an arbitrary Windows folder, stop unrelated services, or run a script that you cannot read. If a service refuses to stop or a folder is in use, restart and follow the version-specific Microsoft procedure again instead of forcing it.
5. Verify the package in Microsoft Update Catalog
If the same KB still fails, investigate applicability rather than repeatedly resetting the cache. In Microsoft Update Catalog, compare the package with the context you recorded:

- Whether a newer package has superseded it
A package marked as superseded or not applicable should not be forced. If the catalog entry matches your installation and Microsoft documents it as suitable for manual servicing, download it from the catalog and keep the file in a known local folder. Do not use a third-party mirror.
Microsoft documents installation of an appropriate package with DISM. From an elevated Command Prompt, the syntax is:
Dism /online /add-package /packagepath:<path_to_package>
Replace the placeholder with the full path to the package you downloaded. Confirm the product, architecture, language, and servicing level one more time before pressing Enter. A matching catalog package can help when Windows Update’s delivery path is damaged; it cannot make an incompatible or superseded package valid.
6. Consider matching repair media as an advanced branch
Use repair media only when the earlier steps fail, DISM cannot repair the image, or an Insider/device build is out of sequence. A matching Windows ISO and an in-place repair can replace damaged operating-system components while retaining the installation, but the match is critical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Match the installed edition.
- Match the language.
- Match the architecture.
- Match the build as closely as the repair path requires.
- Back up important files before starting.
The ISO-and-in-place-repair route mentioned for an Insider or skipped-build case is community guidance, not a universal Microsoft fix. If the build or edition does not match, stop and obtain guidance rather than starting the repair. An incorrect image can create a larger servicing problem than the original error.

Choose the next step by risk and evidence
The following order keeps broad, reversible checks ahead of operations that can alter servicing state.
| Option | Installation risk | Evidence needed | Applicability check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and Windows Update troubleshooter | Lowest | General update symptom | Windows decides what to repair |
| DISM, then SFC | Low | Administrator access and an installed Windows image | Repairs the local image; does not choose a package |
| Update-component cache reset | Moderate | Evidence that services or cached files are damaged | Still requires a valid update |
| Manual Microsoft Update Catalog package | Higher | Exact KB, product, architecture, language, build, and supersedence status | Must be listed as applicable |
| Matching ISO and in-place repair | Highest | Build mismatch or an image DISM cannot repair | Edition, language, architecture, and build must match |
This is a decision framework, not a requirement to complete every row. Once the update installs, stop. If a lower-risk step produces a new error, preserve the message and reassess the context before escalating.
When the failure happens at a particular stage
It fails while downloading
Start with the restart and troubleshooter, then DISM and SFC. If the same KB fails after those repairs, a damaged update cache is a plausible next branch, so use Microsoft’s version-specific component reset. Do not manually install a package until you have verified the KB and its applicability.

It reaches a percentage and rolls back
A percentage alone does not identify the cause. Record the KB, build, and exact rollback message, run the image and system-file repairs in order, and then check whether the package is superseded or intended for another build. Reset the update components only after those checks.
It fails during reboot
Allow Windows to finish its rollback or recovery process rather than powering it off. After Windows starts normally, record the build and KB again, run the troubleshooter, and continue with DISM and SFC if you have not already done so. An Insider-channel mismatch deserves particular attention before any manual package or ISO is used.
The catalog package says it is not applicable
Do not force it. Recheck edition, architecture, language, servicing level, and build, and look for a superseding package. “Not applicable” is evidence that the selected package does not match the installation; it is not an invitation to bypass the check.
Security software may be blocking servicing
Microsoft troubleshooting guidance allows temporarily removing third-party antivirus as a diagnostic step when security software is blocking servicing. Follow that product’s removal instructions, disconnect from unnecessary networks while protection is absent, test Windows Update, and reinstall or re-enable protection immediately afterward. This is a targeted test, not a permanent recommendation, and it does not replace normal antivirus protection.
What not to do
- Do not install registry cleaners to treat 0x80070032.
- Do not use “driver booster” utilities for a Windows Update servicing error.
- Do not download a random ISO or a package from an unofficial mirror.
- Do not force a package that Microsoft Update Catalog marks as not applicable or superseded.
- Do not repeatedly retry the same KB without recording the build and checking applicability.
- Do not delete update folders before stopping the services specified by Microsoft’s reset procedure.
Confirm the result
After a successful installation, restart once if Windows requests it and return to Settings → Windows Update. Confirm that the KB is listed in update history and that no pending restart remains. Keep the winver details and the KB number with your troubleshooting notes; they are useful if a later cumulative or feature update reports a different code.
