Windows Update error 0x80070057 means an update failed to install; during an upgrade, Windows may describe it as “The parameter is incorrect.” The code is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Corrupted update files or system components, permissions, and incorrect configuration can all produce it. Work through the low-risk fixes first, then reset the update cache and escalate to repair media only if necessary.
What error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft uses 0x80070057 for a failed update installation. In Windows upgrade and installation guidance, the accompanying text is “The parameter is incorrect.” That wording does not necessarily mean you typed a bad command. It indicates that a component received a value or configuration it could not use.

Several conditions can lead to the same code:
- Damaged or incomplete files in the Windows Update download cache.
- Corruption in protected Windows system files or the component store.
- Permissions that prevent an update service from reading or replacing files.
- Incorrect system configuration, including an inaccurate clock or interrupted servicing state.
- A partial download interrupted by an unstable connection, security software, or a VPN.
Because the code has multiple possible causes, there is no single universal command that guarantees a fix. The safest approach is to begin with Windows’ own diagnostic tool, then repair system files, rebuild cached update data, and finally use recovery media if the installation itself is damaged.

Before changing Windows Update, protect your files
Back up documents, photographs, saved games, browser data, and any work that exists only on the computer. Microsoft specifically recommends making a backup before troubleshooting; a USB flash drive can hold a copy of important files. If you later need installation or recovery media, verify that the backup opens on another device before proceeding.
- Copy personal folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Downloads.
- Export application data that is not stored in those folders, including local mail archives and project databases.
- Record your Windows edition (Home or Pro), system architecture (64-bit or 32-bit), and current release so recovery media matches the installation.
- If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, save the recovery key somewhere you can reach without the affected Windows session.
A cache reset normally removes only temporary update downloads, but a repair installation or clean installation has broader consequences. Do not skip the backup because the first two fixes appear harmless.
Step 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
The built-in troubleshooter is Microsoft’s recommended first action. It checks common service and configuration problems without requiring command-line work. Use the path for your Windows version.

Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the checks and any offered repairs to finish.
- Restart the PC, even if the troubleshooter does not insist on it.
- After the restart, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart when the process finishes.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it made a change, test Windows Update before doing anything more invasive. If it finds no problem or the same code returns, continue to system-file repair.
Step 2: Remove practical blockers
These checks are particularly important when the error appears intermittently or after a download stops partway through.
Verify the network
Use a stable connection and avoid starting the update while switching between Wi-Fi networks. If possible, test a wired connection or move closer to the wireless access point. Pause large downloads and streaming until the update has completed.
Check free storage
Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, and confirm that the Windows drive has adequate free space for the update and temporary files. Remove only files you recognize, and empty the Recycle Bin only when its contents are no longer needed.
Recommended Free Tools
Correct date, time, and time zone
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when those options are appropriate for your location.
- Select Sync now if it is available.
An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation and make an otherwise good download fail.
Temporarily remove connection interference
Disconnect a VPN and retry. Security software can also interrupt a partial download or file replacement. Follow the security product’s documented pause procedure, enable protection again immediately after the test, and do not browse or download files while protection is paused. If the update succeeds only when a particular product is paused, consult that product’s support documentation rather than leaving protection disabled.
Step 3: Repair protected Windows files with SFC and DISM
Use an elevated Command Prompt for these repairs. They do not normally remove personal files, but you should still have the backup described above.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run System File Checker
At the administrator prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and let the scan reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because the result is written at the end. SFC can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption it could not repair. Restart after the scan, then try Windows Update again.
Use DISM when component data is damaged
If SFC cannot repair files, or if Windows Update still fails, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool to repair the Windows component store. In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM may take considerably longer than SFC and can appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Wait for a completion message instead of interrupting it. Restart when it finishes, run sfc /scannow once more, and then select Check for updates.

If DISM reports that source files are unavailable, note the exact message. Repeating the command will not create missing source files; use Microsoft’s Get Help flow or official installation media for the repair path instead.
Step 4: Rebuild the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete download in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution can cause the same update to fail repeatedly. Resetting this cache makes Windows Update download fresh copies. The procedure does not delete your personal documents, but it does remove already downloaded update packages, so the next check must download them again.
Stop the Windows Update service
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator as described above.
- Enter the following command and press Enter:
net stop wuauserv
Wait for the message that the Windows Update service has stopped. If Windows says the service is not running, continue to the cache step.
Clear only the cache contents
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the contents of that folder, not the parent
C:Windowsfolder and not unrelated system folders. - Delete the selected contents. If a file is locked, close File Explorer, confirm that the service is stopped, and try again.
Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. Windows will recreate missing cache contents as needed.
Start the service and retry
Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run:
net start wuauserv
Restart Windows, connect to a stable network, and use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. The first scan can take longer because the cache is being rebuilt. If the same package fails again, record its name or knowledge-base number before moving to escalation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 5: Check the update history and isolate a repeat failure
When the error returns, open the update history to determine whether one update or every update is affected. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- If several unrelated updates fail, system corruption, permissions, or a service problem is more likely than a single bad package.
- If only one update fails after the cache reset and file repairs, capture its exact name and failure details for Microsoft support.
- If the failure occurs only when a VPN or security product is active, troubleshoot that software’s update filtering rather than repeatedly deleting the cache.
Do not repeatedly run repair commands without reading their results. The error code alone cannot tell you whether the next useful action is a component repair, a service reset, or escalation.
Step 6: Escalate with Microsoft’s recovery options
Use Get Help
Microsoft’s Get Help flow can collect Windows Update details and direct you to the current recovery procedure for your release. Have the error code, the affected update’s name, your Windows edition and version, and the results of SFC or DISM available.
Consider an in-place repair
An official Windows installation image can support a repair installation that refreshes Windows components while attempting to preserve applications and personal files. The exact choices depend on the edition and architecture already installed. Read every screen and select the option that preserves your files only when it is explicitly offered. Keep the verified backup and recovery key available in case the process is interrupted.
Use a clean installation only as a last resort
A clean installation can remove applications and data from the Windows drive. Before starting, copy the backup to a separate device, confirm that it can be opened, and gather application installers, license information, and hardware drivers. Verify that the installation media matches your Windows edition, architecture, and intended release. Disconnect external drives that do not contain the installer or backup so they cannot be selected accidentally.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided through the normal supported lifecycle. If the affected computer still runs Windows 10, fixing this installation error may be useful for immediate stability, but you should also determine whether the hardware can move to a supported Windows release or whether a supported replacement plan is needed. Do not assume that repairing one failed update restores ongoing security coverage.
Common mistakes that make 0x80070057 harder to fix
- Skipping the restart after troubleshooting. The troubleshooter can change service state or configuration that is not active until the next boot.
- Deleting the wrong folder. Clear only the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionafter stopping Windows Update; do not remove unrelated Windows directories. - Closing SFC or DISM early. A progress percentage that appears stationary does not prove the command has stalled.
- Running commands without elevation. A normal Command Prompt may return access-denied errors and leave the underlying issue unchanged.
- Leaving security protection disabled. Pause it only for a controlled test and turn it back on immediately.
- Starting a reinstall without a verified backup. A clean installation is not a troubleshooting shortcut when irreplaceable files remain on the system drive.
- Using mismatched installation media. Edition, architecture, and Windows release must be checked before an in-place repair or clean install.
A practical decision path
- Back up personal files and record your Windows edition and architecture.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates again.
- Confirm network stability, free storage, correct time, and whether a VPN or security product is interrupting the process.
- Run SFC, restart, and retry. If corruption remains or the error continues, run DISM, restart, run SFC again, and retry.
- Stop Windows Update, clear the contents of
SoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry. - If the failure persists, use Get Help and prepare official repair media. Reserve a clean installation for cases where less destructive recovery cannot restore Windows.
This order keeps personal-data risk low while addressing the documented causes in sequence: configuration and service checks first, protected-file repair next, cached-download replacement after that, and installation recovery only when ordinary servicing cannot complete.
