How to Fix Windows Update Error 0x8007045d (I/O Device Error)

Windows Update error 0x8007045d means Windows could not reliably read or write data because of an input/output (I/O) device error. The fault can be in the system drive, an external USB device, a cable or port, damaged update files, or corrupted Windows components. Back up important files first, then isolate removable hardware, check the disk, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, and reset the update cache. Do not assume the Windows Update service itself is the only problem.

What error 0x8007045d means

Microsoft defines 0x8007045d as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” During an update, Windows is trying to read or write files and receives an unreliable response from a storage or transfer path.

The code identifies the type of failure, not one specific defective part. A failing internal drive, a loose SATA or USB connection, a bad port, an external enclosure, removable media, incomplete update data, or damaged Windows files can all produce the same message. A single occurrence after a transient disconnect is different from an error that returns after every restart and update attempt.

Is 0x8007045d dangerous, and is a drive failing?

The code is not proof that a hard drive or solid-state drive is dying, but it is a reason to treat storage health seriously. Repeated read errors, a drive that disappears from File Explorer, clicking or grinding sounds from a hard disk, very long hangs, or errors that follow one device to another computer point toward hardware or the connection path. Continued scans and retries can add stress to a deteriorating drive, so protect data before extensive troubleshooting.

  • Stop if symptoms are severe: if the disk is clicking, repeatedly disconnecting, or becoming dramatically slower, minimize use and consider professional data recovery rather than repeatedly repairing it.
  • Separate software from hardware: an update-cache reset can repair corrupted metadata, but it cannot repair a failing cable, port, enclosure, or disk.

Before changing anything: record the failure and remove variables

Write down when the message appears: while downloading, during installation, after a restart, or when a particular USB or secondary disk is connected. This timing helps identify the layer that failed. Also note the Windows edition and whether the same update fails repeatedly.

Disconnect nonessential USB hard drives, flash drives, printers, scanners, card readers, docks, and optical drives. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the system disk connected. Restart once and retry Windows Update. If the update succeeds, reconnect devices one at a time until the error returns; the last device or its connection is then the primary suspect.

If the failure occurs only when an external device is attached, test a different known-good port and cable. Avoid unpowered hubs while testing. Try the device on another computer if possible. An error that follows the device suggests the device or enclosure; an error that stays with one port or cable suggests that connection path. Do not replace the Windows installation until this simple isolation test is complete.

The troubleshooter can correct common service and configuration problems, but it cannot establish that a disk is healthy. If 0x8007045d returns, continue with the storage checks below.

Check the system drive with CHKDSK

CHKDSK checks the file system and can repair logical errors. It is a diagnostic step, not proof that a drive is physically sound. Run it after the backup.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Enter the command exactly as shown:
chkdsk /f C:
  1. If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check, type Y and press Enter.
  2. Restart the computer and allow CHKDSK to finish. Do not interrupt it while it is checking the disk.
  3. Record whether it reports file-system errors, bad sectors, or no problems. After Windows starts, try the update once.

A result that repeatedly finds new errors, a drive that vanishes, or an I/O error that follows one disk across ports is a reason to secure another backup and have the drive, cable, or enclosure tested. Plan replacement only when diagnostics or isolation implicate that component; replacing hardware at random can waste time and does not repair corrupted Windows files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair Windows components in the correct order

Windows Update depends on the component store and protected system files. Run DISM first, then SFC. DISM can repair or supply the component store that SFC relies on; reversing the order can leave SFC without a healthy source.

Run DISM

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to reach completion. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for several minutes.

Normally DISM obtains replacement files through Windows Update. If the update client itself is broken, use a matching Windows installation source instead:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example. Replace it with a real source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. Do not guess an image index or mix files from another edition or build; a mismatched source can fail to repair the component store.

Run System File Checker

  1. After DISM finishes, enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Let the scan reach 100 percent, then read the result.
  2. Restart Windows and test Windows Update.

If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired files and the update now succeeds, corruption in Windows components or protected files was likely involved. If both complete without finding a problem, the I/O path, update cache, or an interfering program remains more likely.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Open Windows Update and check for updates again.

If a rename reports that a file is in use, a service did not stop. Recheck the service-stop messages, close Settings, and run the stop commands again before renaming. Do not delete the folders while services are still active. The renamed folders preserve the old cache; Windows creates new folders during the next update attempt.

Some Windows 10 community answers also stop cryptSvc and run netsh winsock reset. That is community guidance rather than a universal Microsoft prescription. Consider it only after the standard reset and ordinary network checks have failed, and restart after a Winsock reset.

Rule out security software and startup conflicts

Third-party antivirus or security software can interfere with update operations. If your security product provides a documented temporary removal or troubleshooting procedure, follow it rather than simply disabling random components. Keep its installer and license information so you can restore it immediately after testing. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary, and reconnect it to a trusted network only for the controlled test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A clean restart can expose a conflicting startup program or driver. Use Windows’ clean-startup procedure for your edition, restart, and try the update. If the update works only in that state, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflict is identified. Restore normal startup afterward.

For storage, chipset, USB, or controller problems, obtain drivers and firmware from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer. Avoid unverified driver packages. A driver update is relevant when the I/O error is tied to one controller or peripheral; it is not a substitute for testing a disk that is physically failing.

All software steps complete but 0x8007045d remains Unresolved hardware, firmware, controller, or an unusual Windows fault Review storage health and Event Viewer, check manufacturer firmware and drivers, and contact the PC or drive manufacturer before reinstalling Windows

When to consider an in-place repair or clean installation

An in-place Windows repair is a later escalation when storage tests are clean, DISM/SFC and the cache reset do not help, and the fault appears confined to the operating-system installation. It requires a matching installation source and sufficient time for several restarts. Back up first and verify that the source matches the installed edition and architecture.

A clean installation is more disruptive and should not be the first response to an I/O error. It erases applications and, depending on the method, personal data. Use it only after a verified backup and after hardware has been checked. If the underlying disk or cable is failing, reinstalling Windows can accelerate data loss and will not make the hardware reliable.

Windows 10 support and upgrade planning

Microsoft states that free Windows Update support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 computer may still run, but it should not be treated as receiving the same free servicing as a supported Windows release. Once the immediate I/O problem is under control, plan migration to a supported Windows 11 configuration where the hardware permits it. Confirm compatibility and back up before changing the operating system; an upgrade does not repair a failing drive.

How the fixes differ

Method Primary purpose Data risk Administrator access Restart or downtime Reversible?
Disconnect and isolate devices Tests the physical I/O path Low No Usually one restart Yes
CHKDSK Checks and repairs file-system errors Low after backup; stop if the disk is failing Yes May run during restart Repairs are not generally undone automatically
DISM Repairs the Windows component store Low Yes Usually none until you test Not a rollback operation
SFC Repairs protected Windows files Low Yes Usually one restart to verify Not a rollback operation
Update-cache reset Rebuilds update metadata and downloads Low; old folders are renamed Yes Restart recommended Old folders remain until removed
In-place repair Reinstalls Windows components while attempting to preserve apps and files Moderate; backup required Usually yes Substantial Limited
Clean installation Replaces the operating-system installation High without a verified backup Yes Substantial No simple undo

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the backup: an I/O error can be an early sign of storage failure.
  • Running SFC before DISM: repair the component store first so SFC has a dependable source.
  • Deleting update folders while services run: stop BITS and Windows Update before renaming their folders.
  • Guessing a DISM source: use a real source that matches the installed edition and build.
  • Replacing hardware without isolation: test the cable, port, enclosure, and drive separately where possible.
  • Repeating a failing update indefinitely: repeated retries do not repair a deteriorating disk and can complicate recovery.
  • Using a clean install as the first fix: it can erase data and leaves a hardware fault untouched.

What information to give a technician

Record the exact code, the update name or KB number if shown, when the failure occurs, CHKDSK’s final result, DISM and SFC results, whether disconnecting peripherals changes the behavior, and whether the error follows a device, cable, or port. Include the Windows edition and build. This evidence lets a technician test the likely layer instead of repeating unrelated repairs.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder, and crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a category-based free trial of at least two days followed by a subscription.
