Windows Update error 0x8007045D (sometimes typed as 08007045D, without the x) means Windows encountered an input/output (I/O) device error while reading or writing data. The code does not identify one defective part: the fault may involve the Windows system drive, an external drive, a USB or SATA cable, a port, removable media, or another device in the update path.
Back up important files before clearing update data or testing storage. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the update cache, repair Windows system files, and test the disk and connections. Replace hardware only when diagnostics and repeatable I/O failures point to that hardware.

What 0x8007045D means
Microsoft identifies 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE, with the message “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” In practical terms, Windows requested a read or write and the storage path did not complete it successfully.

The code alone cannot tell you whether the problem is a failing system SSD or hard drive, a connected USB disk, an SD card, a loose or damaged cable, a bad port, or another device. It can also appear when update files are incomplete or corrupted, so start with the software checks before buying hardware.

The code is not, by itself, evidence of malware. Treat it as a reliability warning: protect your files, avoid unnecessary writes to a suspect disk, and work through the checks in order.
Before troubleshooting: protect your files
Microsoft’s update guidance puts backup first, and that order matters when an I/O error may involve storage. Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, saved games, and other personal data to a second physical drive or to OneDrive if it is available. Verify that several files open from the backup before proceeding.
- Do not use the suspect external drive as the only backup destination.
- If copying a file repeatedly fails, stop retrying that file and use another destination.
- Do not format removable media or initialize a disk until you have recovered anything you need from it.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during repairs and diagnostics.
Write down the exact code, when it appears, and whether other disk operations fail. That information will help distinguish an update-cache problem from a physical I/O problem.
Confirm your Windows version and update context
The troubleshooting screens differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10. Open Settings > System > About and note the edition and version before following the matching path.
| Windows version | Windows Update troubleshooter path | Support context |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Windows Update. Windows 11 may also offer the automated flow in the Get Help app. | The cited Microsoft troubleshooting instructions apply to Windows 11. Availability of a particular update still depends on the device and release. |
| Windows 10 | Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. | Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That end-of-support status is separate from diagnosing an I/O error. |
If you are still on Windows 10, record the version before spending time on an update that may no longer be offered for that installation. The error can nevertheless indicate a genuine storage or connection fault that should be investigated.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first
- Open the version-specific path in the table above.
- Start the Windows Update troubleshooter. Allow it to apply any repair it reports.
- Restart the computer even if the troubleshooter says no change was necessary.
- After signing in, open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10) and select Check for updates.
Record the result rather than repeatedly clicking the check button. If the same code returns immediately, continue to the cache reset. If it returns only when a particular peripheral is attached, go directly to the I/O-path checks below.
Reset Windows Update’s downloaded files and services
A damaged or incomplete update download can produce an I/O failure even when the drive itself is healthy. Microsoft’s procedure stops the update service, clears the files in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starts the service again. Use an administrator account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Save your work and close Settings.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Stop the services that may have files open by entering these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvcIf a service reports that it was not running, continue with the next command.
- In File Explorer, enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. Delete the contents of that folder, not theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. Windows will recreate the needed download data. - If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the three services are stopped. If the lock remains, restart Windows and repeat the stop-and-clear steps before proceeding; do not force-delete unrelated system folders.
- Return to the elevated terminal and start the services:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv - Restart Windows, then check for updates once.
Clearing this cache removes downloaded update files, so Windows may need to download them again. It does not erase your personal documents. If the reset succeeds once but the I/O code returns on every subsequent update, treat the repeatability as a reason to test the storage path rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.
Check free space before repairing files
Insufficient space is one of Microsoft’s listed causes of update failures. Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, and inspect the system drive, normally C:. Remove only files you recognize as safe to remove, and empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate. Keep the backup you made earlier on a separate destination.
Free-space requirements vary by update, Windows edition, installed language packs, and the existing state of the system; Microsoft does not give one universal amount for this error. Leave a practical reserve rather than trying to complete an update with the system drive nearly full.
Repair corrupted Windows components and system files
Microsoft Learn recommends checking and repairing Windows file corruption when ordinary update troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. Run the servicing repair first and the system-file checker second from an elevated terminal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for it to finish. It can remain at one percentage for an extended period; do not close the window solely because progress appears paused.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannowAllow the scan to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
If either command reports that it could not repair files, note the exact message. A repair failure combined with other read/write errors increases the need for disk and cable diagnostics; it is not proof that the drive must be replaced.
Investigate the complete I/O path
If the troubleshooter, cache reset, space check, and file repairs do not stop 0x8007045D, test every device involved in reading or writing data. Make one change at a time so you can identify what affects the result.

Disconnect nonessential storage and peripherals
Shut down Windows and disconnect external hard drives, USB flash drives, card readers, docks, and removable cards that are not needed to boot or run the update. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the internal system drive connected. Start Windows and retry the update.
If the update works with a peripheral disconnected, reconnect devices individually and test again. The returning device, its cable, its power supply, or its port becomes the focus of the diagnosis. Do not assume the peripheral itself is bad until it fails on a known-good cable or port as well.
Change the port and cable
For a USB device, connect it directly to a different port on the computer rather than through a hub or dock. For a SATA drive, power the computer off and have the cable and connector checked; a loose or damaged cable can interrupt I/O without the drive electronics being defective. Use a known-good replacement cable only after your files are backed up.
Test the same device on another computer when practical. A failure that follows the device is different from a failure that remains with one port or one computer. Keep notes on which combinations succeed.
Test normal read and write operations carefully
Open several existing files from the system drive and, if safe, copy a representative file to a different physical destination and back. Repeat the test with the external device that was connected when the update failed. Errors, unexplained disconnects, very long stalls, or files that cannot be read indicate that the issue extends beyond Windows Update.
Do not run repeated write-heavy tests on a drive that is clicking, disappearing, or producing read errors. Preserve the backup and move to manufacturer diagnostics instead.
Run the storage manufacturer’s diagnostics
Use the diagnostic utility supplied by the drive or computer manufacturer, and check for available firmware updates for the affected device. Follow the utility’s instructions exactly; some tests can be lengthy, and a repair or firmware operation may require a restart. Save the result, including any health status, error code, or recommendation.
A diagnostic result that identifies media errors, repeated unreadable sectors, or a failed device provides a basis for replacement. A “healthy” result lowers suspicion but does not prove that a cable, port, power connection, or intermittent fault is good, so compare it with your repeatable I/O tests.
Check removable media separately
If an SD card, USB stick, or external disk was present during the failed update, remove it and test the update with only the system drive attached. If the error follows the removable device, copy recoverable files immediately and stop using it for important data until its health is established. Never format it as a first response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose software repair, hardware diagnosis, or replacement
Use the evidence you collected rather than the code alone. The following comparison keeps a temporary workaround separate from a confirmed hardware decision.
| Finding | Most likely direction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The troubleshooter or cache reset lets the update complete, and other file operations are normal. | Update data or services were the immediate cause. | Keep the backup and monitor the next update. No hardware purchase is justified. |
| The update works only after one external device is unplugged. | That device, its cable, power, or port is in the I/O path. | Test another cable, direct port, and computer; run the manufacturer’s diagnostic before deciding on replacement. |
| Reads or writes fail on the system drive, diagnostics report media errors, or the drive repeatedly disconnects. | Possible failing system storage or connection. | Prioritize recovery and a verified replacement plan. Do not wait for an update retry to prove the failure. |
| Diagnostics pass, but one port or cable consistently fails. | Connection path is more suspect than the drive. | Use a known-good port or cable and have internal connections checked if the problem persists. |
| No disk operation fails outside Windows Update, and hardware tests pass. | Windows components, update services, or the particular update remain possible causes. | Proceed to escalation with the exact version, code, steps taken, and diagnostic results. |
Do not replace a drive merely because 0x8007045D appeared once. Conversely, do not keep resetting Windows Update when the same device produces independent read/write errors. No single replacement product is appropriate without identifying the failing component and its interface.
Escalate with useful diagnostics
When standard procedures do not resolve the failure, Microsoft Learn recommends gathering troubleshooting information for support. Prepare a concise record containing:
- Windows edition, version, and build; note whether it is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The exact spelling and capitalization of the code and any accompanying message.
- The update’s behavior: immediate failure, failure at a percentage, or failure only with a particular device attached.
- Whether the troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM, and SFC completed successfully.
- Which storage devices, ports, and cables were tested, and whether the error followed a device.
- The drive manufacturer’s diagnostic result and any firmware recommendation.
Give support the results rather than only saying that Windows Update failed. If the system drive is showing independent I/O errors, complete or verify your backup before attempting additional repairs.
