The failed KB number and the component named in Update history determine the correct repair. Start by recording that KB, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, and reset the update cache if necessary. A WinRE recovery-environment update needs a different fix from a .NET Framework update.
Do not resize a recovery partition for a .NET failure, and do not repeatedly install a package without checking its Windows version, prerequisites, and supersedence status. The procedure below takes you from identification through component-specific repair and escalation.

What error 0x80070643 means
0x80070643 is the Windows error text commonly shown as ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE. It is a generic installation-failure result, not a diagnosis. The same code can appear when Windows cannot apply a normal operating-system update, a .NET Framework update, a Microsoft Defender package, or a Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) update.

That distinction matters because each package is serviced differently. A damaged download may be corrected by clearing the Windows Update cache. A WinRE package may fail because the hidden recovery partition lacks space. A .NET package may fail because the .NET installation state or the Windows Installer database is inconsistent. The first useful action is therefore to identify the exact update rather than trying unrelated fixes.

Step 1: Find the failed KB and component
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update, then Update history. On some older Windows interfaces, the equivalent list is under Settings and Update & Security.
- Locate the entry marked failed and copy its complete KB number. Also note whether it is labelled as a Windows, .NET, Defender, or WinRE update.
- Record your Windows edition and version. Keep the architecture, such as 64-bit, visible if you plan to use the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Note whether the failure happens while downloading or only after installation begins, and record the date and time shown in Update history.
Search the exact KB number in Microsoft Support and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Read the package page before downloading anything: it can show whether the update has been superseded, which editions it supports, and which servicing prerequisites must already be installed. If a newer cumulative update replaces the failed KB, installing the older package again is usually the wrong path.
Step 2: Run the supported Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
Open the Get Help app from Start and search for Windows Update troubleshooting. Follow the guided checks and allow it to apply the suggested repairs. Restart Windows if the app requests it, then return to Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Older Windows interfaces
Open Settings → Troubleshoot → Windows Update (or the corresponding Update & Security → Troubleshoot page on older releases). Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, apply its recommendations, restart, and test the update again.
The troubleshooter is the appropriate first-line action because it can correct common service and configuration problems without changing a recovery partition or rebuilding .NET. If it reports that no issue was found, keep the exact KB and result; that information determines the next branch.

Step 3: Reset the Windows Update cache
Use this step when downloads or cached update metadata may be damaged, or when the troubleshooter did not clear the failure. You need an administrator account. Save work first because stopping the service temporarily interrupts update activity.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Stop the Windows Update service with
net stop wuauserv. Wait for confirmation that the service stopped. - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, close other update-related windows and confirm that the service is stopped before trying again. - Return to the elevated terminal and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart the computer, open Settings → Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Clearing this folder removes locally cached update files and metadata; Windows downloads fresh copies. It does not remove your personal files. The next scan can take longer because the cache has to be rebuilt. If the same KB fails again, stop repeating the cache reset and use the component-specific section below.
Step 4: Apply the fix for the failed component
When the KB is a WinRE or recovery-environment update
Microsoft’s WinRE guidance identifies insufficient free space in the recovery partition as a cause of 0x80070643 for the affected recovery updates. One cited WinRE update requires 250 MB of free space in that partition for successful installation. This is separate from free space on the main Windows volume.

- Run
reagentc /info. - Check the output to see whether Windows RE is enabled and to identify the registered recovery location.
- Use Disk Management or the recovery-partition details in Microsoft’s KB-specific instructions to assess available space. Do not guess which partition is the recovery partition; changing the wrong partition can make recovery tools unavailable.
- If the KB article says more space is required, follow that article’s partition-resize procedure exactly. Back up important files before altering partitions, and suspend the operation if the layout on your computer does not match the documented steps.
- After the resize, run
reagentc /infoagain to confirm the recovery environment is still registered, restart Windows, and check for the KB again.
A WinRE partition change is not a general remedy for every installation failure. Apply it only when Update history and the KB documentation identify a recovery-environment update. If the recovery partition already meets the stated requirement, investigate the package’s prerequisites or component-store state instead of expanding it repeatedly.

When the KB targets .NET Framework
For .NET failures, Microsoft attributes the 0x643/1603 family to corruption in the .NET Framework installation or an inconsistency in the Windows Installer (MSI) database state. The repair path is therefore different from a WinRE partition repair.
- Confirm in Update history and on the KB page that the failed package is for .NET Framework, not Windows or WinRE.
- Use Microsoft’s .NET Framework repair guidance to repair the existing installation and its registration. Follow the procedure that matches your Windows version and the .NET release named by the KB.
- Retry the update after the repair and a restart.
- Use the documented .NET cleanup and reinstall procedure only if the repair step does not correct the installation state. Cleanup tools can remove .NET components used by applications, so read the warnings and reinstall the release required by your Windows version.
- For an older security-only package, check whether Microsoft has issued a corrected or later release and whether the KB page lists a prerequisite. Install the current supported release or prerequisite identified there rather than forcing an obsolete package.
Do not apply a .NET cleanup procedure to a WinRE-only failure. Conversely, expanding a recovery partition does not repair an MSI registration problem.
When the KB is a general Windows or servicing update
If the failed item is neither WinRE nor .NET, check the KB page for component-store and system-file repair instructions for your Windows Client version. Those procedures address servicing corruption and missing prerequisites, while the cache reset addresses damaged downloaded files. Follow the commands and restart points shown for your edition instead of mixing procedures from a different Windows release.
Before a manual install, verify that required servicing-stack or prerequisite updates are present and that the target KB has not been superseded. A package can fail with the same generic code when it is the wrong architecture, intended for another Windows build, or missing a prerequisite.

Step 5: Install a package manually only when the KB page supports it
Manual installation is useful when Windows Update repeatedly fails but Microsoft has published a matching standalone package. It is not a substitute for identifying the component.
- Search the exact KB number in the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Compare the catalog entry with your Windows edition, version, architecture, and language. Do not select a similarly numbered package for another release.
- Read the package details for prerequisites and supersedence. If the KB has been replaced, use the supported replacement rather than the obsolete entry.
- Download the appropriate package and close applications that may be using files updated by the installer.
- Run the downloaded installer, allow it to complete, and restart when prompted.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history to confirm whether the package installed. If it fails with 0x80070643 again, record the new timestamp and return to the KB-specific guidance instead of downloading another random copy.
How to choose the right repair

Common failure modes and what they tell you
The same error returns immediately after clearing the cache
This makes a transient download problem less likely. Recheck the product name and KB, then follow the WinRE, .NET, or general servicing branch that matches it. A second cache reset will not create space in a recovery partition or repair MSI registration.
The KB installs manually but remains in Update history as failed
Restart first and check for updates again. Confirm that the manually installed package matches the exact Windows build and architecture. If Windows still reports a failure, use the KB page’s supersedence information; the history entry may refer to an older package while a newer cumulative update is now applicable.

That result does not identify the cause. Preserve the KB number, product, Windows version, and whether the failure occurred during download or installation. Proceed to the cache reset, then the component-specific procedure.

Windows cannot delete files in SoftwareDistribution
Verify that the elevated terminal reported the Windows Update service stopped. Close Settings and any update dialogs, retry the deletion, and start the service again afterward. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.
You cannot identify the recovery partition
Stop before changing disk partitions. Use reagentc /info and the exact Microsoft KB instructions to identify the registered WinRE location. If your disk layout differs from the documented example, obtain support rather than applying a guessed resize.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Escalate with evidence when the exact KB still fails after the supported troubleshooter, cache reset, and applicable component repair. Provide the KB number, Windows edition and version, product name, failure stage, timestamp, and the text returned by reagentc /info if the issue is WinRE-related. Use the KB-specific Microsoft Support article or Microsoft Support channel; those sources can determine whether the package has been replaced, whether a prerequisite is missing, or whether a servicing log needs review.
Do not apply a recovery-partition change to a .NET-only failure, do not run .NET cleanup for a WinRE-only failure, and do not treat the generic code as proof that malware or a failing hard drive is involved. The code describes an unsuccessful installation, while the KB identifies the repair path.
