Windows Vista cannot return to normal Microsoft update support. Microsoft ended Vista and Vista Service Pack 2 support on April 12, 2017, then retired the SHA-1 Windows Update endpoints in July 2020. That combination explains why Vista may say it cannot check for updates or show errors such as 80072ee2, 8024402c, or 80244019.
You can still repair local update problems, install Vista Service Pack 2 and individual catalog packages manually, or try a clearly labeled third-party proxy. None of those options makes Vista a supported, fully patched operating system.

Why Windows Vista stopped updating
There are two different problems that are often confused:
- Microsoft support ended. Microsoft’s lifecycle documentation says, “Support for this product has ended.” Extended support for Windows Vista and Vista Service Pack 2 ended on April 12, 2017. Microsoft no longer provides the normal security-support lifecycle for the operating system.
- The old update connection was retired. Microsoft retired its SHA-1 Windows Update endpoints in late July 2020. Its impact information lists Windows Vista, Vista SP1 and Vista SP2 as no longer supported for Windows Update and associates the change with scan errors
80072ee2,8024402cand80244019. SHA-1-signed Windows content was also retired from the Download Center on August 3, 2020.
Consequently, a clean Vista installation can fail to scan even when its hardware, network connection and Windows Update service are working. Local troubleshooting is still worthwhile because an incorrect clock, disabled service, damaged cache or missing service pack can produce similar symptoms. Local repairs, however, cannot reverse an expired product lifecycle or recreate Microsoft’s retired endpoint.

First, identify exactly what is installed
Do this before downloading anything. Installing the wrong architecture, language or release can fail, and a package for another Windows edition is not a valid substitute.
- Open Start, right-click Computer, choose Properties, and note the Windows Vista edition.
- Record whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit. The same window identifies the system type; if necessary, open Control Panel, choose System and Maintenance, then System.
- Write down the installed service-pack level. You need to know whether the machine is on Vista SP2, SP1 or has no service pack.
- Open Windows Update from Control Panel and copy the complete error code, not just the sentence saying that updates cannot be checked.
- Make a backup of important files before installing a service pack or a sequence of older update packages. Vista is obsolete, so keep a way to restore your files if an installation fails.
Rule out local causes before using manual packages
These checks are diagnostics, not a way to restore Microsoft support. They are useful when the failure is caused by the computer itself rather than the retired update service.
Confirm network access
Open a browser and test more than one ordinary website. If the computer cannot reach the internet, repair the connection first. A proxy, captive portal or filtering device can also prevent Windows Update from reaching its service. Record whether browsing works normally before changing Windows Update files.

Correct the date and time
Open the clock from the taskbar, choose Change date and time settings, and verify the date, time and time zone. An incorrect clock can invalidate secure connections and make an otherwise reachable service appear unavailable. Apply the correction, restart Vista and test once more.
Use an administrator account and check disk space
Service-pack and catalog installations require administrative permission. Sign in with an administrator account or provide credentials when prompted. Also check the system drive in Computer; if it is nearly full, remove or move personal files before attempting a large package. Do not remove system folders merely to create space.
Restart and inspect the Windows Update service
- Restart the computer. This clears a pending reboot state that can block installation.
- Press
Windows key+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the service list. Its startup type should not be Disabled.
- If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start. If it is already running, choose Restart when that option is available.
- Close the Services window and run one more update check. Keep the exact result and error code.
Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting update-related services and clearing the SoftwareDistribution cache. That guidance is written for newer Windows versions, so use it here as a local diagnostic only; it cannot make Vista supported again.

Rebuild the SoftwareDistribution cache carefully
A damaged local cache can stop a scan before the connection problem becomes obvious. The following procedure changes only the cache folder; Windows can create a new one.

- Open
services.mscand stop the Windows Update service. - Open
C:Windowsin Windows Explorer. - Locate the folder named
SoftwareDistribution. Rename it to something such asSoftwareDistribution.oldrather than deleting it immediately. Renaming preserves a fallback copy. - Return to
services.mscand start Windows Update again. - Restart the computer and try a scan. If the new cache works, you can remove the old folder later; if it does not, stop the service and restore the original name.
Do not rename or delete the folder while the service is actively using it. If Windows refuses the change, stop the service again and verify that it is no longer running.
Install Vista Service Pack 2 manually
Vista SP2 is the baseline to verify before installing later individual packages. The Microsoft Update Catalog identifies KB948465 as Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and describes it as containing updates delivered since Service Pack 1.

- Open the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for
KB948465. - Compare each result with the edition recorded earlier. Select the entry for Windows Vista, not a similarly named Windows Server release.
- Match the package to the machine’s architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) and language. Do not assume that a 64-bit download is correct simply because the processor is capable of 64-bit operation; use the architecture shown in System properties.
- Download the package, close other applications and run it with administrator permission.
- Allow the installer to complete and reboot when requested. A service-pack installation can take considerably longer than an ordinary update.
- After the restart, open System properties again and confirm that Service Pack 2 is displayed. If it is not, stop and investigate the installation error rather than proceeding with random KB files.
If the catalog does not offer a package matching the language or architecture, do not substitute a different release. Find an installation source that explicitly matches the recorded Vista edition, or plan a migration to a maintained operating system.
Install a specific missing KB from the catalog
Manual installation is most useful when an error or an application identifies one particular Knowledge Base number. It is not a reliable way to recreate every update ever issued for Vista.
- Search the Microsoft Update Catalog for the exact KB number, including the “KB” prefix.
- Read the product column and description. Confirm that the package applies to Windows Vista SP2 and to the correct architecture and language.
- Reject entries whose title identifies Windows Server or another Windows release, even if the KB number looks similar.
- Download the matching package and note where it was saved.
- Run the installer as an administrator. If it reports that the update does not apply, stop; that message normally means the prerequisite, edition, architecture or service-pack level is wrong.
- Restart if requested, then check System properties and Windows Update for the resulting state.
Install prerequisites in the order stated by the package description. Avoid downloading a long list of unrelated KBs “just in case”; older updates can have prerequisites and supersedence relationships that are not obvious from their titles.

These codes do not prove that every failure has the same cause. A proxy, DNS failure, incorrect clock or disabled service can produce connection symptoms too. Their importance is that Microsoft specifically lists them in connection with the retired SHA-1 endpoint path affecting Vista.
Legacy Update: an optional third-party workaround
Legacy Update is an independent project that says it supports Vista and proxies protocol traffic to Microsoft’s official Windows Update servers. It is not Microsoft support and does not extend Vista’s security-support lifecycle.
When it may be appropriate
- You have confirmed the Vista edition, architecture and service-pack level.
- Local network, date/time, administrator, service and cache checks have not fixed the scan.
- Your goal is to retrieve an archived update set rather than obtain ongoing security support.
Safety and verification points
- Verify that you are using the project’s genuine documentation and a current release before installing anything. Independent projects can change, disappear or publish different builds over time.
- Read what the proxy changes and keep a backup. Treat it as software that handles update traffic, not as a Microsoft component.
- Do not provide credentials or install unrelated “repair” packages offered by download pages.
- After installation, test one update operation and record what changed. Remove the workaround if it behaves unexpectedly.
A successful proxy install can make an old update workflow operate again, but it cannot provide new Vista security fixes after the April 2017 end of support. It also cannot guarantee that every historical package remains available or installs on every edition.

Things that will not solve the underlying problem
- Repeatedly clicking Check for updates will not bring back a retired endpoint.
- Installing a package simply because its title contains a familiar KB number can produce an “update does not apply” error or leave the system inconsistent.
- Changing the clock temporarily to bypass an error can create certificate and file-timestamp problems; set the real date and time instead.
- Deleting the entire Windows directory, using an unrelated repair kit or disabling security software permanently is not a supported update method.
- A successful manual installation does not mean Vista has resumed receiving current security fixes.
What to do after a successful installation
- Confirm the service-pack level and the KB numbers that actually installed in Control Panel under Programs and Features and View installed updates.
- Restart again and check that the computer still boots normally.
- Keep a written list of installed packages and the original downloads so you can identify a failed prerequisite later.
- Disconnect the machine from sensitive accounts and routine internet use as far as practical. Vista’s support lifecycle remains ended even when a manual package installs.
- Plan a move to a supported Windows release or another operating system that still receives security maintenance. Treat any further Vista update work as temporary maintenance, not a long-term security plan.
