Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen Windows will not update, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the computer, and run Check for updates again. If that fails, work through the distinct causes in order: insufficient storage, a stopped update service, damaged cache files, corrupted system components, connection timeouts, incompatible drivers, or a mismatched manual update package. Back up important files before deleting update data, repairing the component store, or reinstalling Windows.
Microsoft describes Windows Update as an essential part of Windows 11 for security, stability, and feature updates. The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with a separate note about Windows 10’s support status after October 14, 2025.

What “Windows will not update” can mean
The symptom is not one single fault. An update can remain at 0 percent because the download cannot begin, or appear frozen between 51 and 99 percent while Windows is checking, unpacking, or installing files. A restart may expose a numeric error instead. Record that code before trying random commands: the code usually identifies the failure class and points to a narrower repair.
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (on Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history) and note the failed update’s KB number and error code. A KB number identifies the package; the hexadecimal code identifies why installation stopped.

Prepare the PC before troubleshooting
Do these checks before changing services or deleting files:
- Keep the computer connected to AC power. A shutdown during installation can leave Windows in a recovery state.
- Use a stable internet connection. If possible, avoid a connection that repeatedly drops while the update is downloading.
- Sign in with an administrator account. Several repair steps require elevation.
- Disconnect nonessential printers, docking stations, USB drives, and other external hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and hardware required to operate the PC.
- Back up personal files to a separate location, such as a USB flash drive for backup, before clearing the update cache, running component repairs, or considering a reinstall.
- Check free space in Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft’s current upgrade guidance says, “Your device requires at least 16 GB of free space to upgrade a 32-bit OS, or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS.” These are upgrade requirements, not a promise that every update needs exactly that amount.
If storage is tight, remove or move large personal files first. An external USB storage drive can provide temporary room, but keep the backup separate from the Windows installation you are repairing.
Step 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app from Start and launch the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Allow it to run its checks and apply any proposed repair.
- Restart the PC even if the troubleshooter says it made only a minor change.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
You can also use the settings-based troubleshooter: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. The Get Help workflow and the settings workflow are two entry points to the same first-line diagnosis; use the one available on your installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
- Restart, return to Windows Update, and choose Check for updates.
If the same code returns after the restart, continue with the matching section below instead of repeatedly rerunning the troubleshooter.
Step 2: Reset the Windows Update cache
Damaged download data can produce 0x8007000d and other installation failures. Microsoft’s procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, remove the contents of its cache folder, start the service again, and retry.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the services list, locate Windows Update. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the Windows system folder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any File Explorer window displaying the folder before trying again.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
This procedure removes the local update download and staging data; it does not remove your personal documents. The backup made earlier still matters because every system-level repair carries some risk if the computer loses power or has a separate storage problem.
Step 3: Repair the component store and system files
Use this path when the error points to component-store corruption, especially 0x800f081f, 0x800f0831, or 0x80073712. Microsoft Learn’s sequence is DISM first, then System File Checker.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealthand let it finish. Do not close the window while the operation is in progress. - In the same elevated window, run
Sfc.exe /Scannow. - Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies replacement files; SFC checks protected system files against that repaired store. Running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source, which is why the documented order is DISM followed by SFC.
Step 4: Match the exact error code to the likely cause
The following codes are examples documented in Microsoft’s Windows Update and upgrade guidance. Treat the meaning as a direction for the next check, not as proof that no other cause exists.
| Error code | What it commonly indicates | First action |
|---|---|---|
0x80070422 |
The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. | Open services.msc, locate Windows Update, and make sure it is running before checking again. |
0xC1900101 |
An incompatible driver is blocking the upgrade. | Disconnect nonessential hardware and address recently added or incompatible drivers before retrying. |
0x80072EE2 |
A connection timeout occurred while Windows contacted update servers. | Stabilize the internet connection, then rerun the troubleshooter and Check for updates. |
0x80070005 |
Access was denied. | Sign in with an administrator account and rerun the update or elevated repair step. |
0x800f0922 |
Insufficient free space or a component problem. | Verify the 16 GB/20 GB upgrade thresholds for your architecture, then use DISM and SFC if space is adequate. |
0x8007000d |
Damaged update files or a corrupted update cache. | Use the SoftwareDistribution cache-reset procedure, restart, and check again. |
0x800f081f, 0x800f0831, or 0x80073712 |
Component-store or servicing corruption. | Run DISM with /Restorehealth, then SFC, restart, and retry. |
When the service is disabled
For 0x80070422, the service check is more useful than deleting cache files. In services.msc, open the Windows Update entry and inspect its current state. If it is stopped, start it, restart Windows, and run Check for updates. If it stops again, record that behavior and the accompanying code before attempting deeper repairs.
When the connection times out
For 0x80072EE2, avoid changing the component store until the connection is reliable. A timeout can leave an incomplete download that later looks like cache corruption, so first reconnect to a stable network, restart, and run the troubleshooter.

When access is denied
For 0x80070005, confirm that the account performing the repair has administrator rights. Then rerun the troubleshooter or the required elevated command prompt. Do not use arbitrary permission-changing commands; the code alone does not identify which file or registry entry was denied.
Step 5: Check a manually downloaded update package
A package downloaded outside the normal Windows Update workflow can fail even when Windows itself is healthy. Before installing one manually, verify all three compatibility points:
- Windows version and edition: the package must target the release installed on the PC.
- CPU architecture: a package for 32-bit Windows cannot be substituted for a 64-bit package, or vice versa.
- Prerequisite and supersedence: a newer cumulative update may replace the package, or the package may require an earlier KB first.
On older systems, Microsoft Learn gives this example for checking whether prerequisite hotfixes are installed:
get-hotfix KB3173424,KB2919355,KB2919442
Use the command as an example of prerequisite verification, not as a universal requirement for every current Windows release. If the KB is superseded, built for the wrong architecture, or missing a prerequisite, select the correct package rather than forcing installation.
What to do when the percentage never changes
A percentage that remains at 0 percent points first toward download, service, connection, or cache issues. A percentage that reaches 51–99 percent and repeatedly fails points more toward installation, component, storage, or driver compatibility. In either case, record the percentage, KB number, and code, restart once, run the troubleshooter, and select Check for updates again.
If the same update fails at the same stage after the cache reset and any code-specific repair, stop repeating identical attempts. Repeated interruptions can create more incomplete staging data. Confirm the backup, free-space requirement, administrator access, and hardware connections before escalating.
Last resort: reinstall Windows 11 carefully
When ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve a Windows 11 update failure, Microsoft points to its Windows 11 software-download page for a clean-install escalation. A clean installation is substantially more invasive than a troubleshooter, cache reset, or DISM/SFC repair: it can remove installed applications and data from the Windows installation.
- Copy personal files to a separate backup location and verify that the backup opens.
- Record application installers, license information, and any device-specific settings you will need afterward.
- Read the notes and requirements for Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation tool before creating or using installation media.
- If using a Windows 11 installation USB, confirm that the USB device is the one you intend to erase or dedicate to installation media.
- Follow Microsoft’s installation instructions exactly and keep the PC connected to power.
Do not choose a clean install merely because an update is slow. Use it after the documented repairs fail, the update remains blocked at the same stage, and your backup is complete.

Windows 10 support changed on October 14, 2025
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Because the current date is after that deadline, a Windows 10 PC may be unable to receive ordinary free updates by design rather than because its cache is damaged. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 where the hardware meets its requirements.
You can still use the troubleshooting steps above to diagnose a failed update that was offered to your Windows 10 installation, but do not interpret the absence of new free Windows 10 updates as proof that every service or file is broken. Check the Windows version and support status before spending time on component repairs.
Quick Recap
Choose the least-invasive fix that matches the evidence
| Fix | Invasiveness | Data risk and preparation | Best diagnostic match | Time factors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Low | Restart required; backup is still sensible. | First attempt for an unexplained failure. | Automated checks and a restart. |
| Check storage, network, account, and hardware | Low | No file deletion; disconnect nonessential devices. | Low space, timeouts, access errors, or driver-related failures. | Depends on freeing space or stabilizing the connection. |
| SoftwareDistribution cache reset | Moderate | Back up before deleting cache contents. | 0x8007000d or damaged download data. | Windows must download the update again. |
| DISM followed by SFC | Moderate | Back up before system-file repair. | 0x800f081f, 0x800f0831, 0x80073712, and related component errors. | Commands can take time, followed by a restart and another download. |
| Manual package validation | Moderate | Confirm version, architecture, prerequisites, and supersedence. | A specific KB fails outside the normal update workflow. | Requires identifying the correct package before installation. |
| Windows 11 clean installation | High | Complete, verified backup; applications and installation data may be removed. | Ordinary repairs fail and Microsoft’s installation path is appropriate. | Installation media, setup, updates, and application restoration take substantially longer. |
Final recovery checklist
- Record the failed KB and hexadecimal error code from Update history.
- Connect power, stabilize the internet, sign in as an administrator, disconnect nonessential hardware, and verify free space.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and select Check for updates.
- If the code points to damaged downloads, stop Windows Update in
services.msc, clearC:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry. - For component-store codes, run DISM first and SFC second in an elevated Command Prompt, then restart.
- For a manual package, verify Windows version, architecture, prerequisites, and whether the KB has been superseded.
- Escalate to Windows 11 installation media only after a verified backup and careful review of Microsoft’s installation notes.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every update failure.
