If Windows says Word is not your default program, the problem is usually a file association: Windows has not mapped document extensions such as .docx or .doc to the desktop Microsoft Word app. Set Word as the default for each affected extension in Settings > Apps > Default apps. If that choice does not persist, use the right-click Open with command, then Control Panel’s Default Programs view, and finally repair Office if Word’s registration is damaged.
What the warning means
Windows does not identify a document only by its icon or by the application you used last. It reads the filename extension—the letters after the final period—and uses an association table to decide which application should open that file. Microsoft describes extensions as the information that tells Windows which application created or can open a file and which icon to show in File Explorer.

A Word document normally uses .docx, while older Word files commonly use .doc. Templates use extensions such as .dotx and .dotm, and rich-text documents use .rtf. Each extension has its own default-app entry. Word can therefore be the default for .docx while another program remains the default for .doc or .rtf.

It often means only that Windows is asking which installed application should handle that extension. A browser-based Word experience and the installed desktop Word program are also separate targets. Check the file extension before changing anything
Start with the exact file type that produces the warning. A setting for .docx will not automatically change the setting for .doc, templates, or rich-text files.
- Open File Explorer and locate a document that opens in the wrong application.
- If the extension is hidden, turn on filename extensions. In current Windows versions, open View, choose Show, and enable File name extensions. In some Windows 10 layouts, the same control appears on the View ribbon.
- Read the complete filename. Confirm whether it ends in
.docx,.doc,.dotx,.dotm, or.rtf. - Write down every extension that should open in Word. You will set them individually.
Do not rename a file from one extension to another as a fix. Changing report.docx to report.doc changes only the name; it does not convert the document’s internal format and does not repair Windows’ association.
Set Word as the default in Windows Settings
This is the broadest and most controllable method in Windows 11 and Windows 10. It changes the association for the selected extension, so future files of that type open with Word.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Default apps.
- Use the search box to enter the extension, including the period—for example,
.docx. - Select the current application shown for that extension.
- Choose Microsoft Word from the list of available applications. Select the installed desktop Word app, not a browser-based option, when you want files to open locally.
- Accept the confirmation prompt if Windows displays one.
- Repeat the process for
.doc,.dotx,.dotm, and.rtfif those formats are part of your workflow.
Windows supports changing defaults by file type, link type, or application. Searching by file type is the safest choice here because the complaint concerns document extensions. Searching for Word by application can show the extensions currently assigned to it, but it does not guarantee that every Word-related format has been selected.

Windows 11 versus Windows 10
The path is Settings > Apps > Default apps in both versions. The page layout and wording can differ slightly after feature updates, but the essential sequence is the same: search for an extension, select its current default, and choose Word. If a device is controlled by an organization, an administrator policy may prevent changes or restore an approved association after you change it.
Use Open with for a fast, file-level fix
The File Explorer method is useful when you have one document in front of you or when Settings does not make the intended choice obvious.
- Right-click a document with the affected extension.
- Choose Open with, then Choose another app.
- Select Microsoft Word.
- Enable the option that says to always use this app for the selected file type. The exact wording can vary between Windows releases.
- Click OK or Open.
This changes the association for that extension, not just the single file. If you select Word without enabling the always-use option, Windows may open that one file in Word while leaving the default unchanged for future documents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRepeat the procedure with a representative file for each extension. Setting .docx does not set .doc, and setting a document extension does not automatically set template extensions.

Use Control Panel when Settings does not persist
Control Panel remains a practical fallback, especially on computers with multiple Office versions or an older editor that has taken ownership of a file type.
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Programs, then Default Programs.
- Open the view for associating a file type or protocol with a program.
- Find the affected extension, such as
.docxor.doc. - Select the current program, choose Change program, and select Microsoft Word.
- Save the change and repeat for every affected extension.
Control Panel and Settings edit the same general Windows association system through different interfaces. Control Panel can make the relationship easier to inspect when several Office installations are present, but it does not repair Word itself. If the association is correct and double-clicking still fails, move to Office repair rather than repeatedly changing the default.
Which method should you choose?
| Method | Scope | Best use | Multiple extensions | Repairs Office installation? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settings > Apps > Default apps | All files using the selected extension | Primary Windows 10/11 method | Yes, one extension at a time | No; changes associations only |
| Open with > Choose another app | The selected extension, started from a file | Quick correction while viewing a document | Yes, by repeating the process | No; changes associations only |
| Control Panel > Default Programs | All files using the selected extension | Fallback when Settings does not persist or several Office versions appear | Yes, one extension at a time | No; changes associations only |
| Office Modify/Change and Repair | The Microsoft 365 or Office installation | Word is selected correctly but still will not open files or its registration appears damaged | Not an association tool | Yes; changes the installation |
Verify the result instead of testing only one file
After changing an association, close any open Word and File Explorer windows, then test more than one document. Use a local copy first so that a network, email, or protected-location issue does not look like a default-app problem.
- Double-click a local
.docxfile and confirm that the desktop Word application opens. - Test an older
.docfile separately if you use that format. - Test templates such as
.dotxor.dotmonly if your work depends on them. - Check that the Word icon appears for the extension in File Explorer.
- Use Open with on the same file to confirm that Word is still listed as an available application.
If one extension works and another does not, return to Default apps and correct only the extension that failed. Do not infer that a successful .docx test proves that .doc or .rtf is configured correctly.

When Windows keeps reverting to another program
A recurring change usually indicates one of four situations: the other program is reassociating the extension, multiple Office versions are registered, Windows is applying a managed policy, or Word’s registration is damaged. Work through these checks in order.
Check for another editor taking ownership
Some document editors, older Office installations, and browser integrations can register themselves for Word extensions. Set the association again in Settings or Control Panel, then restart Windows and test. If the setting changes back immediately, note which program is shown as the default and remove or reconfigure that program’s file-association preference if it offers one.
Handle multiple Office versions
When more than one Office generation is installed, Windows may display a generic or unexpected Word entry. Use the desktop Word application shown in Open with and confirm that it launches the version you intend to use. If the wrong version continues to reclaim the extension, uninstalling an obsolete Office installation or repairing the intended installation may be necessary. Do not delete program files manually.
Consider organization policies
On a work or school computer, administrators can control default applications. A policy may block changes or reapply a standard association at sign-in. If your choice disappears after every restart or policy refresh, contact the administrator; local repetition will not override a managed setting.

Check whether the problem is location-specific
If a local copy opens in Word but an attachment, server file, or protected document does not, the association is probably working. The failure may instead involve access permissions, a security restriction, a disconnected network location, or the way the originating application supplies the file. Save a copy to a local folder and test it there. For email attachments, use the attachment’s download or save command, then open the saved file from File Explorer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair Microsoft 365 or Office when the association is correct
Repair is the escalation step when Windows shows Microsoft Word as the default but double-clicking still fails, Word launches and immediately closes, or Word’s registration appears incomplete.
- Open Settings and go to the installed-apps or apps-and-features list. The label varies between Windows versions.
- Find Microsoft 365 or your installed Microsoft Office edition.
- Open its Modify or Change control.
- Run the repair option offered by the installer and follow its prompts. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet if the repair requests downloads.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Recheck the
.docxassociation and test a local document.
Repair changes the Office installation, unlike the three default-app methods. Use it after confirming the extension mapping so that you do not modify Office when the only issue is an incorrect Windows association.

Update Windows and Word before deeper startup troubleshooting
Install available Windows and Office updates before diagnosing repeated startup failures. Updates can correct registration and compatibility problems, and they ensure that troubleshooting instructions match the current build.
If Word still fails after repair, follow Microsoft’s Word startup troubleshooting for the specific symptom. Word may rebuild its data settings after a reset, so custom preferences can return to defaults. Record any settings you need before using a reset procedure, and test with a copy of the document rather than the only original.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that do not fix the problem
- Renaming the extension: changing
.docxto.docdoes not convert the file and does not alter the default-app table. - Changing only one format: assigning Word to
.docxleaves.doc,.dotx,.dotm, and.rtfunchanged. - Selecting a browser instead of desktop Word: a web document editor is a different target from the installed application.
- Repairing Office first: repair is unnecessary when Word opens normally and only the association is wrong.
- Testing only an attachment or network file: location or permission problems can be mistaken for an association failure.
- Ignoring hidden extensions: a misleading filename can hide the real type, such as a file that ends in
.docxbut is actually an HTML download with a second extension.
Symptom-based troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
Windows asks which app to use every time for .docx |
No persistent association for .docx |
Set Word in Default apps and enable the always-use option in Open with. |
.docx opens correctly but .doc opens elsewhere |
Each extension has an independent association | Set Microsoft Word for .doc separately. |
| Word appears as the default, but double-clicking does nothing | Word registration or installation problem | Repair Microsoft 365 or Office, then restart and retest. |
| Only server files or email attachments fail | Location, permission, protection, or download issue | Save a local copy and test it from File Explorer. |
| The default changes back after restarting | Another application, multiple Office versions, or an administrator policy | Use Control Panel to inspect the association, identify the program reclaiming it, and contact an administrator if the device is managed. |
| Word opens, but the document displays an error or corrupted content | Document damage or format incompatibility rather than a default-app issue | Test another document of the same extension and use Word’s document-recovery options if only one file fails. |
Quick checklist
- Show filename extensions in File Explorer.
- Identify the exact extension that fails.
- Set Microsoft Word for that extension in Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- If needed, right-click a file and use Open with > Choose another app, enabling the always-use option.
- Use Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs if Settings does not retain the choice.
- Repeat for every required format, including
.doc, templates, and.rtf. - Test a local copy.
- Repair Microsoft 365 or Office only when the association is correct but Word still fails.
- Install current Windows and Office updates before deeper startup troubleshooting.
