Your administrator role is not the issue: dashboard permissions and server-file permissions are separate. The durable fix is to correct ownership and write access for the WordPress files. If the host deliberately blocks direct PHP writes, use the host-supported SSH2, FTPS, FTP-extension, or FTP-sockets method instead. Add FS_METHOD only for a specific, understood configuration problem—not as a universal bypass.

Why WordPress asks for FTP credentials
When you install a plugin, update a theme, apply a core update, or save a rewrite rule, WordPress must write to the server. Its request_filesystem_credentials() function displays a connection form when WordPress cannot obtain a usable filesystem method for that operation. Being a WordPress administrator authorizes actions inside the dashboard; it does not give PHP permission to change operating-system files.

WordPress evaluates the requested path and chooses a filesystem transport through get_filesystem_method(). The available methods are direct, ssh2, ftpext, and ftpsockets. If PHP cannot write directly because the files belong to another account, a parent directory is not writable, or the host disables direct writes, WordPress switches to a transport that needs separate server credentials.
First identify what triggers the prompt
Record the exact action before changing anything. The affected path often reveals the fault.

- Core update: WordPress needs to write to the installation root and its update directories.
- Plugin or theme installation/update: WordPress must write to
wp-contentand the relevant plugin or theme directory, and usually to a temporary update directory. - Permalink save: WordPress may be trying to update the server’s
.htaccessfile. A working plugin directory does not prove that the document root is writable. - Every filesystem operation: A broad ownership, PHP-user, or hosting-policy mismatch is more likely than a single bad directory.
Keep the exact error text. A prompt that accepts credentials but later reports that a directory cannot be created points to a different path or permission problem than a prompt that appears before any connection test.
Back up before changing access
Make a database and file backup, and save a copy of wp-config.php before changing ownership, modes, or filesystem constants. Include the WordPress root, wp-content, and any custom content or upload directories. If an ownership change makes the site inaccessible, the backup gives you a way to restore the configuration while the host corrects the server account.
Do not paste a password into a support ticket or leave broad write permissions in place simply to finish one update. The objective is a least-privilege configuration that remains writable by the intended web-server process.
The durable fix: make the writing process the owner or an authorized group
Find which account runs PHP
The account that executes PHP—often a web-server or PHP-FPM account—must be able to write the directories WordPress uses. On shared hosting, that account may be your hosting user; on a managed server, it may be a service account. Ask the host which account runs PHP if you cannot determine it from the control panel. Do not assume that your shell or FTP username is the same account.
Inspect the complete path
Check ownership and write access for the WordPress root, wp-content, plugin and theme directories, and the update directory. A writable child directory can still fail when its parent blocks traversal or creation. Symlinked plugin, theme, or content directories must be checked at their real target as well as at the visible path.

ls -la wp-config.php .htaccessThe listing should identify the owner and group and show whether the relevant account or group has the required access. If you do not have shell access, use the host’s file manager or ask support to provide the same ownership information.
Correct ownership through the host
Set the owner, or the group with write access, to the account that actually runs PHP. The WordPress administration handbook describes the rule plainly: when WordPress runs as the FTP account, that account must own the files or belong to a group that can write them. On a server using a separate PHP service account, the corresponding service account or a deliberately configured shared group must have access instead.
Do not run a recursive ownership command copied from another server without confirming the correct account and the boundaries of the installation. A wrong owner can prevent both the site and your normal file-transfer login from working. If the account cannot change ownership, only the host can repair it.
Use restrictive modes, not a blanket writable tree
A WordPress support case reported success with directories at 755 and files at 644. Those numbers are a common baseline, not a universal requirement: the correct mode depends on the owner, group, PHP handler, and hosting isolation. Ownership and least privilege control the decision.

- Files need write permission only where an update must replace them; configuration and other sensitive files should not be made broadly writable.
- Never use
777as a permanent solution. It allows every local account covered by the mode to write and can turn a separate vulnerability into a site-wide compromise.
Check for a forced filesystem method
Open wp-config.php and look for an existing FS_METHOD definition. WordPress documents four valid values:

FS_METHOD forces the filesystem method. A stale or incorrect definition can make WordPress request credentials even after ownership has been repaired, or can force direct writes where they are unsafe. If the constant was added during an earlier troubleshooting attempt, remove it temporarily and test the operation without an override. Keep a backup of the file so you can restore the previous state.

When and how to use FS_METHOD = direct
Use a direct override only when you have verified that PHP can safely write the required paths and that the server’s isolation model makes those writes appropriate. Add the line in wp-config.php before the file’s final stop-editing instruction:
define( 'FS_METHOD', 'direct' );Then retry one update. If the prompt disappears and the update completes, inspect the changed files and remove the override if normal method detection now works. If the update fails, produces a permission error, or creates files owned by an unexpected account, remove the line and fix ownership instead.

It does not grant missing privileges, repair a read-only filesystem, or bypass a hosting policy. WordPress recommends changing the constant only while addressing an update problem and reverting it when it does not help.
Use the host-supported transport when direct writes are intentionally unavailable
Some hosts prevent PHP from writing files directly. In that case, an FTP prompt is expected behavior rather than evidence that your dashboard account is broken. Obtain the connection details from the host, including the exact hostname, port, username, and authentication method. The host may require plain FTP, encrypted FTPS, or SSH/SFTP; do not guess between them.
- Confirm with the host which of
ssh2,ftpext, orftpsocketsis supported for this account. - Enter the supplied hostname, port, username, and authentication details in the WordPress filesystem form. Use the host’s required key or password method.
- Run one update or installation and watch for the first path-specific error.
- If the connection succeeds but file creation fails, stop retrying and have the host check ownership and the target directory rather than repeatedly changing credentials.
An FTP, FTPS, or SFTP client can be useful for larger or repeatable file-management tasks, but transferring files manually does not correct ownership. After a manual upload, verify that the resulting files are owned and readable by the account that will serve them.
Account for custom paths and symlinks
Standard layouts usually let WordPress derive its directories. Symlinked or nonstandard installations may need the path constants FTP_BASE, FTP_CONTENT_DIR, and FTP_PLUGIN_DIR. These values must point to the paths as seen by the selected transfer method, not merely to the browser URL or a different server mount.

If a prompt persists only for a symlinked plugin or theme, ask the host to verify the real target, the permissions on every parent directory, and whether the FTP account is allowed to follow the link. Do not replace a path with a guessed absolute directory: an incorrect constant can make WordPress connect successfully and then write to the wrong location.

The owner is still wrong
Changing a mode from 644 to 664 does not help if PHP is neither the owner nor a member of the writable group. Correct the ownership or group assignment first.
A parent or temporary directory blocks the operation
Plugin updates commonly use a temporary directory before replacing the final plugin. Check wp-content, the plugin or theme directory, and the update directory as a chain. For a permalink change, inspect the document root and .htaccess rather than only wp-content.
The PHP account differs between requests
Some hosting configurations run web requests under one account and scheduled or command-line tasks under another. Files created by one account can later become unwritable to the other. Ask the host to use a consistent account or a shared group with controlled permissions.
The server or filesystem is read-only
A read-only mount, security policy, disk quota, or host-level restriction cannot be fixed from the WordPress dashboard. The host must confirm that the filesystem is writable and that the account is allowed to change the requested path.
An override keeps selecting the wrong method
Review wp-config.php after every test. Remove an obsolete FS_METHOD definition and any incorrect FTP path constants, then let WordPress detect the method again.

The credentials are valid but point at a different root
FTP accounts often open in a directory that is not the WordPress root. A successful login followed by missing-file or permission errors usually means the base path, content path, or plugin path needs correction. Have the host confirm the account’s starting directory and the values required by WordPress.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce one operation. Note whether it is a core update, plugin or theme action, or permalink save, and copy the exact error.
- Back up the site and
wp-config.php. Keep the backup outside the web root when possible. - Inspect ownership and access. Check the root,
wp-content, plugins, themes, update directory, and any.htaccesstarget. - Ask who runs PHP. Align the owner or writable group with that account; do not guess or apply a recursive change across unrelated sites.
- Correct only the needed modes. Use the host’s least-privilege baseline; treat
755directories and644files as a starting reference, not a guarantee. - Review configuration overrides. Remove an unnecessary
FS_METHODline and incorrect FTP path constants. - Test without forcing a transport. If direct access is genuinely safe and available, let WordPress detect it.
- Configure the supported transport if necessary. Use the host-provided SSH2, FTPS, FTP-extension, or FTP-sockets details, including the correct root path.
- Retry exactly one update. Inspect the first failing path instead of making broader permission changes.
- Escalate with useful evidence. Give the host the operation, path, ownership listing, PHP account, selected method, and exact error. Request an ownership or server-policy repair when your account cannot perform it.
Choose the remedy that matches the cause

What to do if the site breaks after a change
If the dashboard becomes inaccessible after editing wp-config.php, use the host file manager or your normal file-transfer method to restore the backup and remove the last FS_METHOD or path-constant change. If files were assigned to the wrong owner, ask the host to restore the site account’s ownership rather than compensating with open permissions. Once the site loads, test a single update and preserve the exact error if the prompt returns.
When the account cannot change ownership, the correct escalation is managed WordPress hosting support or a technician who can inspect the PHP service account, filesystem mount, quotas, and security policy. Supplying the exact failing path lets support fix the server configuration without granting unnecessary access.
Frequently misunderstood points
Does an FTP prompt mean my administrator account was hacked?
No. The prompt normally indicates a filesystem-access mismatch. It is about how the server process can modify files, not about the capabilities assigned to your WordPress user.
Will deleting and reinstalling the plugin fix it?
Not if the same directory remains owned by the wrong account or the host still blocks direct writes. Reinstallation can also remove settings or content, so fix the access path first.
Should I leave the direct override permanently?
Only if the host has verified that direct PHP writes are safe and intentional. Otherwise remove it and use correct ownership or the host-supported transport.

Updates can create files under a different service account, or the host can regenerate directories with restrictive ownership. Compare the owner and group of the newly created files with the account that performs the next update, then have the host make the account or group consistent.
Bottom line
Fix the server relationship first: the PHP process must own the WordPress files or belong to a group with write access to the paths it needs. Use restrictive, environment-appropriate permissions, remove stale filesystem overrides, and reserve FS_METHOD = direct for a verified safe setup. When the host intentionally disallows direct writes, enter the host’s exact SSH2, FTPS, FTP-extension, or FTP-sockets details and correct any custom paths instead of weakening permissions.
