Its wp_mail() function hands a message to either a mail-transfer agent (MTA) running on your VPS or an authenticated remote SMTP service. If neither path is installed and configured, contact-form notifications, password resets, order messages and other transactional emails have nowhere to go.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The fastest reliable fix is to identify which transport you are using, verify its host, port, encryption and credentials, send a controlled test, then align your sender domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC. For most self-managed VPS sites, WordPress recommends relaying through a third-party mailing service rather than attempting direct delivery from the server.

How WordPress email works on a VPS
When a plugin or core feature calls wp_mail(), WordPress creates the message and passes it to the configured mail transport. WordPress is not, by itself, an SMTP server, queue manager or recipient-delivery system. Your VPS must provide one of two paths:
- Local MTA: software such as Postfix, Exim, Qmail or Sendmail accepts mail from WordPress, queues it and either delivers directly to recipient servers or relays through another service.
- Remote SMTP or API service: an SMTP plugin or integration opens an authenticated connection to a provider and hands the message to that provider.
A VPS without an installed, running MTA or an active remote integration has no route for wp_mail(). WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance puts it plainly: if you use your own server and do not have an SMTP server, the mail will never send.

There are also two different success points. A successful handoff means your MTA or relay accepted the message. It does not prove that the recipient’s server accepted it, placed it in the inbox or displayed it to the user. Those later stages depend on authentication, reputation, recipient policies, bounces and spam filtering.
Choose the mail architecture before changing settings
The right repair depends on whether you want to operate mail infrastructure or delegate delivery. Compare the choices before installing multiple plugins or daemons.

| Architecture | How it works | Operational skill | Reputation and deliverability responsibility | Queue and log control | Setup and ongoing cost | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local MTA with direct delivery | WordPress submits to an MTA on the VPS; that MTA connects directly to recipient servers. | High. You must secure, configure and maintain the MTA. | You own the sending IP reputation, reverse-DNS expectations, authentication and blocklist remediation. | Maximum control over local queues and logs. | Longer setup and continuing administration; infrastructure cost is yours. | Experienced administrators with a clear reason to run direct delivery. |
| Local MTA relaying through a provider | WordPress uses the local sendmail-compatible interface; the MTA forwards mail over authenticated SMTP. | Medium to high. You maintain the MTA but outsource final delivery. | The provider handles much of the delivery infrastructure, while you still control sender authentication and domain reputation. | Local queue visibility plus provider activity logs. | Moderate setup and a recurring provider charge may apply. | Sites that need a conventional local interface but want managed delivery. |
| WordPress SMTP plugin or API | WordPress connects directly to a remote SMTP endpoint or API from the application. | Low to medium. Plugin and provider requirements still need maintenance. | Mostly delegated to the provider, subject to your domain configuration, content and sending practices. | Plugin logs and provider logs; no full local MTA queue unless one is also present. | Usually the quickest path; cost depends on the service and volume. | Small or moderate sites that do not want to operate a mail server. |
WordPress Developer Resources describes third-party relaying as the recommended method for most self-hosted setups because it is easier to implement than maintaining direct delivery. The same guidance warns that setting up an MTA requires server-management expertise. Choose direct delivery only when you can accept responsibility for queueing, authentication, reputation and incident response.
Preflight checks: establish what is actually installed
Do not start by guessing SMTP values. First map the current path.
Check for a local MTA
Identify which mail daemon, if any, is installed and enabled. On a system using systemd, inspect the service status with the daemon’s actual name, for example:
systemctl status postfix
systemctl status exim
systemctl status sendmail
Use only the command that matches your installation. A “unit not found” result means that daemon is not present; an inactive or failed result means WordPress may have a local path that is not running. Also check whether a hosting control panel or container manages mail separately from the host operating system.

Check the WordPress transport
Review the active SMTP plugin or custom mail code. Confirm that it is enabled, that its provider integration is selected, and that another plugin is not overriding the From address or transport. If no plugin or API integration exists and no MTA is running, install neither at random: decide whether you will configure a local MTA or use a managed relay, then follow that option’s current documentation.
Record a baseline
Before changing values, note the site URL, server hostname, PHP version, active mail plugin and the exact error shown by its test screen. Record the UTC time, recipient address and any message ID. This prevents a vague “still broken” report from hiding which change helped or caused a new failure.
Verify SMTP host, port, encryption and credentials
Every connection setting must describe the same submission mode. Copy the provider’s current hostname and requirements rather than substituting the VPS hostname.
| Setting | What to enter | Typical interpretation | Failure caused by a mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMTP host | The provider’s documented submission hostname. | Not necessarily your website domain or VPS hostname. | DNS, connection or certificate errors. |
| Port | The port approved for the selected encryption mode. | Authenticated submission commonly uses 587 with STARTTLS or 465 with implicit TLS; verify the provider’s exact requirement. Port 25 is commonly used for server-to-server delivery and may be blocked for outbound VPS traffic. | Timeouts, connection refusal or a TLS handshake failure. |
| Encryption | STARTTLS, implicit TLS/SSL, or none only when the provider explicitly permits it. | STARTTLS begins unencrypted negotiation and upgrades the connection; implicit TLS starts encrypted. | “Could not connect,” certificate errors or an authentication attempt on the wrong protocol. |
| Authentication | Enable authenticated SMTP when required; use the documented username and password or app password. | The username may be a full mailbox address, but provider rules differ. | 535-style authentication failures, rejected credentials or repeated login attempts. |
| Timeout and certificate validation | Leave secure defaults unless the provider documents another value. | Never disable certificate verification as a permanent workaround. | Slow failures or insecure connections that appear to work only on one server. |
If a VPS provider blocks outbound port 25, do not keep retrying direct delivery. Use the relay’s authenticated-submission port, usually one of the ports documented above, and enable the matching TLS mode. A network block is different from a bad password: the former fails before authentication, often as a timeout.
Protect credentials while testing
- Use an app password or restricted SMTP credential when the provider supports it.
- Store secrets in the plugin’s protected settings or environment configuration, not in publicly committed theme files.
- After sharing logs with support, redact passwords, tokens, full message contents and recipient personal data.
- Rotate credentials if they appeared in a debug log, screenshot or ticket.
Send a controlled test and classify the failure
Use the SMTP plugin’s test-mail screen when available. Otherwise trigger one predictable WordPress action, such as a password-reset request, from a test account you control. Avoid testing only with a contact form that has several additional plugins and spam checks.
- Enter a recipient mailbox that you can inspect and that is not the same address used as the sender if you want to test cross-provider delivery.
- Send one message and save the exact error, timestamp, recipient, subject and message ID.
- Check the plugin’s mail log immediately. Determine whether WordPress reported a transport error or merely returned success from
wp_mail(). - If a local MTA is involved, inspect its queue and service log at the same timestamp.
- If the relay accepted the message, use its activity or event log to find delivery, bounce, suppression or rejection details.
A transport error points to WordPress, the plugin, DNS resolution, firewall rules, TLS negotiation or credentials. An accepted message that never appears points downstream: inspect bounces, spam folders, recipient headers, DNS propagation, blocklists and sending-IP reputation.

Align the From address with your domain
Set the visible From address to a mailbox on a domain authorized by the relay. For example, use an address on your site’s sending domain rather than an unrelated consumer-domain address supplied by a visitor in a contact form. WordPress warns that an unrelated From domain can prevent delivery because receiving systems see a mismatch between the claimed sender and the system that authenticated the message.
Keep the visitor’s address in the Reply-To field instead. That lets staff reply to the person without pretending that the message originated from the visitor’s domain. Make sure the From mailbox exists when recipients are expected to reply; an unmonitored or nonexistent address creates confusing bounces and lost responses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck common header mistakes
- Use one stable From address across WordPress, the SMTP plugin and the relay account.
- Do not let separate form, commerce and notification plugins silently replace the From domain.
- Use a valid, correctly formatted Reply-To address and reject untrusted header input.
- After sending, inspect the received message’s headers to confirm the visible From, Return-Path and authentication results.
Publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC correctly
Domain authentication is a DNS and message-header task, not a checkbox inside WordPress. Obtain the exact SPF instructions, DKIM selector and DMARC guidance from the relay you chose.
SPF
SPF lists the servers authorized to send for your envelope domain. Publish the relay’s prescribed SPF mechanism in DNS, and avoid creating multiple SPF records for the same domain. If you also send from a local MTA, account for that path exactly as the provider documents.
DKIM
DKIM adds a cryptographic signature to outgoing messages. Add the provider’s public key at the selector hostname it specifies. A copied key with a missing character, wrong selector or incorrect DNS record type will make verification fail even when SMTP authentication succeeds.
DMARC
DMARC tells receiving systems how to handle messages that fail SPF and DKIM alignment with the visible From domain. Start with the policy and reporting address appropriate to your operational readiness, then tighten enforcement after reviewing reports. The visible From domain, authenticated sending domain and DNS records must be aligned; merely having SPF or DKIM somewhere on the account is not enough.

DNS changes can take time to propagate. Test from more than one resolver, inspect the authentication results in a received message and review DMARC reports when available. Do not diagnose a missing DKIM key from a cached lookup immediately after publishing it.
Inspect queues and logs on a local MTA
If WordPress hands mail to a local MTA, application success can coexist with a growing server queue. Use the tools provided by your daemon. On Postfix, typical checks are:
postqueue -p
journalctl -u postfix --since "30 minutes ago"
Equivalent commands differ for Exim, Qmail and Sendmail. Look for repeated DNS failures, connection timeouts, TLS errors, authentication rejections, deferred deliveries and permanent bounce codes. A queue that drains after a temporary network outage indicates a transient problem; a queue that repeatedly defers the same recipients usually needs a configuration or reputation fix.
For a local MTA relaying through a provider, verify both legs: WordPress-to-MTA and MTA-to-provider. The first can succeed while the second fails because the relay hostname, credentials, allowed sender or outbound firewall rule is wrong.
Do not delete a queue blindly
Queued messages may contain password-reset links or customer notifications. Export the error details, identify the affected recipients and follow the MTA’s documented retry, hold or removal procedure. Deleting the queue can erase evidence and create duplicate application sends when a plugin retries later.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Search the recipient’s spam, junk, quarantine and promotions folders.
- Open the raw headers and verify SPF, DKIM and DMARC results, the Return-Path and the relay’s message ID.
- Read the relay event log for delivered, deferred, bounced, blocked or suppressed status.
- Check the bounce code and its explanation. A permanent policy rejection requires a different fix from a temporary rate limit or DNS timeout.
- Verify that the sending domain’s DNS records have propagated and that your sending IP or domain is not listed on relevant blocklists.
- Review content, volume and recipient consent. Authentication improves trust but cannot guarantee inbox placement.
Do not treat “SMTP accepted” as proof of inbox delivery. The receiving server can accept a message and later quarantine it, silently filter it or route it to a folder the user is not checking.
Common symptoms and the most likely branch
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
wp_mail() returns false and no log entry exists |
No MTA, no active SMTP integration or a PHP/plugin loading problem. | Confirm the transport exists, enable the intended integration and repeat the controlled test. |
| Connection timeout to port 25 | VPS egress filtering or a network firewall. | Use the provider’s authenticated-submission port and matching TLS mode, or request an explicit network change. |
| Connection refused | Wrong host or port, stopped local service, or a listener/firewall rule rejecting the connection. | Check service status, hostname resolution and the provider’s endpoint. |
| TLS or certificate error | STARTTLS and implicit TLS were mixed, the hostname does not match the certificate, or system time/DNS is wrong. | Match encryption to the documented port and use the exact provider hostname; keep certificate validation enabled. |
| Authentication failure | Wrong username, password/app password, disabled SMTP authentication or a credential restricted to another sender. | Reset or rotate the credential, verify account permissions and test with the approved From address. |
| Relay accepts but message is missing | Spam filtering, bounce, suppression, DNS/authentication failure or reputation problem. | Inspect relay events, recipient headers, bounce details, DNS and blocklists. |
| Only one form or plugin fails | That component overrides From, Reply-To, headers or the mail transport. | Compare its generated headers and settings with a successful WordPress test. |
| Messages arrive from some domains but not others | Recipient-specific filtering, reputation or policy enforcement. | Compare headers and SMTP response codes from the affected recipient systems rather than changing WordPress blindly. |
When to switch from direct delivery to a relay
Direct delivery can be valid, but it is an operations project rather than a quick WordPress setting. You must maintain the MTA, secure it against abuse, manage queues, publish and monitor authentication records, protect the server’s IP reputation and respond to recipient-server policy changes. WordPress reserves this route mainly for administrators with the required expertise.
A managed relay is usually the pragmatic choice when the VPS is new, port 25 is restricted, mail volume is modest, or there is no one available to monitor queues and bounces. A local MTA relaying through a provider is useful when existing applications expect a sendmail-compatible local interface. A direct SMTP plugin or API is simpler when the site does not need a full server mail layer.
Provider dependency is the trade-off: a relay introduces account limits, service policies and a recurring cost that you must verify for your region and volume. Keep a documented fallback plan, an export of DNS records and a tested replacement credential rather than discovering the dependency during a password-reset outage.
Operational checklist after the fix
- Document the selected architecture, provider hostname, approved ports and TLS mode.
- Store the SMTP credential securely and rotate it on a schedule or after exposure.
- Keep one controlled test recipient and run it after major WordPress, PHP, plugin or firewall changes.
- Monitor plugin, MTA and relay logs for authentication errors, deferred mail and bounces.
- Review SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment whenever you add a new sender, domain or relay.
- Set a real From mailbox and use Reply-To for visitor addresses.
- Track sending volume and suppression events so a compromised form cannot damage domain reputation.
- Retain message IDs and timestamps long enough to investigate a missing notification without storing unnecessary message content.
A practical decision path
If no transport exists, choose a managed relay unless you already operate MTAs confidently. If a transport exists but the connection fails, verify host, port, TLS and firewall behavior before changing DNS. If authentication fails, correct credentials and sender authorization. If the relay accepts mail, stop changing WordPress and trace the message through relay events, recipient headers, bounces and reputation. This sequence separates application faults from network, authentication and inbox-placement problems and prevents repeated blind configuration changes.
