A 404 at /wp-admin/ usually means WordPress or the web server is routing the administrator URL to the wrong place. First compare /wp-admin/ with /wp-login.php, identify whether the 404 page is generated by the server or by WordPress, and confirm the site’s exact HTTPS, hostname, and directory. Then repair URLs, rewrite rules, extensions, or damaged files in that order. The sequence below is designed to preserve access and make each change reversible.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Start by identifying what the 404 actually means
WordPress normally sends a logged-out visit to /wp-admin/ to wp-login.php. If that redirect itself ends at a 404, the failure is useful evidence: the login endpoint, site URL, cookie handling, HTTPS redirect, proxy, or rewrite configuration may disagree about the site’s address.

1. Confirm the canonical WordPress URL
A migration, domain change, forced HTTPS rule, or www/non-www change can leave WordPress pointing at an address that no longer exists. Check all of these details together:
- Scheme:
http://versushttps://. - Hostname: the exact www or non-www form configured in DNS and the web server.
- Port: if the site is served on a nonstandard port.
- Path: whether WordPress is installed at the domain root or in a folder such as
/blog.
If you can reach any dashboard screen, go to Settings > General and compare WordPress Address (URL) with Site Address (URL). They must reflect the live scheme, host, and path. Do not add or remove a trailing subdirectory casually; it changes every generated admin and front-end URL.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →After a migration, also inspect wp-config.php for WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL. If those constants are defined, they can override values stored in the database. The corresponding home and siteurl rows are in the WordPress options table. In a database tool, verify that both rows use the same live scheme, hostname, and installation path. Take a database backup before editing either value.
Use one canonical address everywhere: bookmarks, the login form, redirects, the site settings, the web server, and any CDN or reverse proxy. A browser that reaches one hostname while WordPress redirects to another can make a valid login look like an administrator 404.
2. Test the direct login endpoint and the redirect
- Visit
/wp-login.phpon the canonical address. - Sign in with a known administrator account.
- Note the exact URL shown after submission.
- If the browser lands on
/wp-admin/and receives a 404, compare that URL with the address that displayed the login form.
If wp-login.php is also missing, this is not merely a failed dashboard redirect. Check the document root, installation subdirectory, core files, and server rules. If the login form loads but the post-login redirect changes from HTTPS to HTTP, changes hostname, or drops a subdirectory, fix the canonical URL and proxy configuration before disabling anything else.

Clear cookies for the affected domain and retry in a private window after URL or HTTPS changes. Stale cookies can preserve a session for the wrong host or scheme, while a proxy that does not pass the original HTTPS state can cause repeated or incorrect redirects.
3. Flush rewrite rules from the dashboard when possible
If you can reach any part of the dashboard, use the lowest-risk repair first: open Settings > Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing the selected structure. WordPress rebuilds its rewrite rules and, on Apache configurations that permit it, regenerates the .htaccess rules. This often repairs a stale rule after a migration or permalink change.
Test all three paths after saving:
- The public home page.
- A normal front-end post or page.
/wp-admin/and/wp-login.php.
If the dashboard cannot be reached at all, continue with the file-based checks below rather than repeatedly trying to save permalinks.
4. Repair Apache rewrite handling and .htaccess
On Apache, WordPress uses .htaccess in the installation directory to route requests that are not real files or directories through index.php. WordPress documentation identifies a corrupted .htaccess as a likely cause of routing errors. A disabled Apache mod_rewrite module or a host that forbids directory overrides has the same practical effect: the front end may load while administrator or pretty-permalink requests return 404.
Back up and isolate the existing file
- Use FTP or the host’s file manager to show hidden files.
- Download a copy of the current
.htaccess, if present. - Rename it temporarily, for example to
.htaccess.disabled, rather than deleting it. - Test
/wp-admin/and a front-end permalink.
If the error changes, the old file contains a bad or conflicting rule. For a root-level, single-site Apache installation, the standard WordPress block is:

Restore the block only after confirming that the installation is at the domain root. A site installed in /blog needs a matching rewrite base and target path; copying the root rule unchanged can send requests to the wrong location. Multisite also has installation-specific rules. Use the rules generated for that layout, not a generic root example.
When you cannot change Apache settings
Ask the hosting provider to confirm that mod_rewrite is enabled and that the virtual host allows .htaccess overrides (often through an AllowOverride setting). The host must also verify that the domain’s document root is the directory containing wp-admin, wp-login.php, and index.php. Do not enable arbitrary modules or paste rules intended for another server stack.
Nginx and IIS installations
Nginx does not read .htaccess; its equivalent routing belongs in the server block. IIS uses its own URL Rewrite configuration. If the response is server-branded and the site runs on either stack, give the administrator the failing path and ask them to inspect the active virtual-host rules rather than creating an Apache file that the server will ignore.
5. Account for subdirectory and multisite paths
WordPress installed below the document root changes both the public URL and the rewrite target. For example, an installation in /blog should use https://example.com/blog/wp-admin/, not the root-level path. Confirm the directory name in the hosting file manager and compare it with the home, siteurl, WP_HOME, and WP_SITEURL values.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMultisite adds another layer: network, site, and subdirectory or subdomain settings determine which administrator path is valid. A rule set copied from a single-site root installation can break network administration while leaving the home page reachable. Use the official rule pattern for the exact multisite mode and server stack, and have the host verify the virtual-host mapping if more than one site shares the server.

6. Isolate plugins and themes without losing the ability to roll back
A plugin can alter login URLs, redirect destinations, rewrite rules, or access checks. A theme can add redirect code or custom 404 handling. Temporarily disable extensions as an isolation test, not as a permanent fix.
Disable every plugin through the file system
- Back up the site files and database.
- Open the WordPress installation in FTP or the hosting file manager.
- Rename
wp-content/pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.off. - Try
/wp-login.php, sign in, and then open/wp-admin/. - If access returns, rename the folder back to
plugins. - Reactivate plugins one at a time, testing the dashboard after each activation.
The first plugin that reproduces the 404 is the likely conflict. Update it, review its redirect or login settings, or contact its author with the exact request and log entry. Do not leave the production plugins directory renamed after testing; WordPress will treat all plugins as inactive.
Switch to a default theme
If plugins are not responsible and you have file access, temporarily select an installed default WordPress theme. If the dashboard is inaccessible, a database administrator can change the active theme only with a verified backup and the correct theme option values; ask a professional if you are not comfortable making database changes. A theme change that fixes the error points to theme code, not to a damaged WordPress core.

7. Check HTTPS, redirects, cookies, and proxies
Admin requests are especially sensitive to inconsistent HTTPS detection. Review every layer that can issue a redirect:
- WordPress
homeandsiteurlvalues and any URL constants. - Apache, Nginx, or IIS redirect rules.
- Hosting control-panel domain and SSL settings.
- CDN or DNS proxy settings.
- Load balancer or reverse-proxy headers that tell PHP whether the original request was HTTPS.
Use browser developer tools or the network panel to follow the redirect chain. Record each status code and Location target. A chain that alternates between HTTP and HTTPS, or between www and non-www, identifies a configuration conflict. Correct the source rule instead of adding another redirect on top of it.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
After changing the scheme or host, clear cookies for both old and new addresses and retry in a private window. If only one browser fails, its stored cookies or cached redirect may be involved; if every browser fails, concentrate on server and WordPress settings.
8. Check core-file integrity and logs
A missing or damaged wp-admin directory, wp-login.php, or core bootstrap file can produce a 404 even when rewrite rules are correct. Compare the installation with a fresh WordPress package that matches the site’s version. Take a complete backup first, then replace only affected core files or directories. Do not overwrite wp-content or wp-config.php when repairing core files.
Logs can distinguish a routing failure from a PHP or permission problem:
wp-content/debug.log, if WordPress debugging is enabled.- The PHP error log in the hosting panel or server.
- Apache, Nginx, or IIS access and error logs.
- CDN or proxy request logs, when a proxy sits in front of the host.
Capture the timestamp, HTTP method, exact URL, status code, redirect target, and a few surrounding log lines. A server log showing that the request never reached PHP points toward the web server or proxy; a WordPress or PHP entry points toward application code or a damaged installation.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch
| Symptom | Next action | Do not do first |
|---|---|---|
/wp-login.php loads, but successful login redirects to a 404 |
Verify canonical URLs, subdirectory path, cookies, HTTPS detection, and proxy redirects | Replace core files before checking the redirect chain |
| Both login and admin paths are server-branded 404s | Check document root, virtual host, rewrite support, and server rules | Deactivate every plugin as the first move |
| Front-end home page works, but pretty URLs and admin fail | Flush permalinks; inspect .htaccess or the Nginx/IIS equivalent |
Change database URLs without evidence of a migration mismatch |
| Only one admin screen fails | Reproduce that request, isolate the responsible plugin or theme, and inspect logs | Rewrite server-wide routing rules |
| Failure began immediately after migration | Compare scheme, host, path, URL constants, database options, and proxy settings | Assume the new host uses the same document root or rewrite policy |
| Failure began after an update and core files are missing | Restore from backup or replace verified core files after checking logs | Overwrite wp-content and risk uploads or extensions |
After a migration: a complete verification checklist
- The DNS record points to the intended server and the server’s virtual host uses the correct document root.
- The live HTTPS certificate covers the exact hostname users are visiting.
WP_HOMEandWP_SITEURL, when present, match the live scheme, host, and path.- The database
homeandsiteurloptions match those values. - The installation directory contains
wp-admin,wp-login.php, andindex.php. - Rewrite rules match the server stack and root or subdirectory layout.
- Proxy or load-balancer headers preserve the original HTTPS state.
- Cookies are cleared after the hostname or scheme changes.
- Plugins and themes have been tested without leaving a renamed production directory.
- Logs show requests reaching the expected virtual host and PHP entry point.
When to involve your hosting provider
Escalate when you cannot inspect virtual-host configuration, enable rewrite support, read server logs, or safely repair files. Send the provider a concise evidence packet:
- The exact failing URL, including scheme, hostname, port, and subdirectory.
- Whether the page is server-branded or WordPress-branded.
- Whether
/wp-login.phploads and where a successful login redirects. - The time of a fresh reproduction, with the relevant time zone.
- Recent migration, domain, SSL, plugin, theme, or WordPress-core changes.
- Relevant Apache, Nginx, IIS, PHP, WordPress, CDN, or proxy log lines.
- The server stack and whether the public home page and ordinary permalinks work.
Do not send passwords or a full database dump in an initial support ticket. A host can then verify document roots, rewrite modules, override permissions, proxy headers, and server logs without guessing at the cause.

The reliable repair pattern is diagnostic rather than destructive: establish the exact URL, determine which layer produced the 404, flush or correct routing, isolate extensions, verify files and logs, and only then make server-level changes. That approach fixes the underlying path problem while preserving a way back if a change has an unexpected effect.
