This is a hosting configuration failure—not a wrong password. Restore PHP support or the server’s PHP handler first; only then investigate cookies, caching, firewalls, or WordPress login settings.

What the download tells you
wp-login.php is the WordPress login script in the site root. A normal request is processed by PHP and returns an HTML login page. A download means the request reached the server, but the server treated the file as an ordinary document and returned its contents with a download response.

The most useful confirmation is to test the front page and one additional, non-sensitive PHP URL. If index.php or several other PHP files also download, the problem is broader than the login route: PHP execution has stopped for the domain, account, or server. A WordPress.org support moderator summarized the condition this way: “Your site is not configured to interpret PHP files, it is transmitting PHP files instead. Speak your host provider. Once they correct that and install PHP, then your web server should work and you can proceed.”
Do not upload a replacement wp-login.php, change your password repeatedly, or try to solve this with a browser extension. Those actions cannot make a server execute PHP, and a downloadable PHP file can expose application code.

First, determine how wide the failure is
- Open the site front page. Note whether it renders normally, shows an error, or downloads a PHP file.
- Test one other PHP endpoint. Use a routine WordPress URL such as the front page’s PHP-backed request, not a newly created diagnostic file containing credentials or configuration details.
- Record the pattern. Is only
wp-login.phpaffected, or doindex.phpand other PHP files download too? Does the issue affect one domain or every site in the hosting account? - Check timing. If the behavior began after a migration, PHP-version change, web-server change, or hosting-plan move, tell the host exactly when that event occurred.
Several PHP downloads point to a PHP handler or web-server outage. A single login URL failing after PHP is confirmed healthy is more likely to involve caching, a firewall rule, cookies, URL settings, or a WordPress file warning.
Enable PHP in Plesk
Plesk documents disabled PHP support for the domain as a direct cause of the “wp-login.php is being downloaded instead of opening” symptom. If you administer the site through Plesk, use the domain-level setting before changing WordPress files.

- Sign in to Plesk with an account that can edit the subscription.
- Open Domains and select the affected domain, such as
example.com. - Choose PHP Settings.
- Enable or select PHP Support. If the panel asks for a PHP version or handler, choose a version and handler already installed and approved by your host.
- Save or apply the change.
- Retest the front page and
wp-login.phpin a private browser window. A working result is an HTML login form, not a file download.
Command-line procedure
Administrators with the Plesk command-line utility can enable PHP support for a subscription with:
plesk bin subscription -u example.com -php trueReplace example.com with the subscription’s actual domain. Run the command on the Plesk server with the required administrative permissions, then test the site. If the command is unavailable or returns a permissions, license, or handler error, stop changing files and have the server administrator correct the subscription or PHP installation.

When Plesk is not your panel
Other control panels use different labels, but the setting has the same purpose: the domain must have PHP installed and an active PHP handler. Look for terms such as PHP version, PHP support, PHP handler, FPM, or script handler in the domain or site settings.
If you cannot find such a setting, contact hosting support. Ask them to verify all of the following for the affected domain:
- PHP is installed on the server and enabled for the subscription.
- The virtual host maps
.phpfiles to the intended PHP handler. - The configured PHP-FPM pool or equivalent service is running and reachable.
- The web-server error log records no handler, permission, socket, or configuration failure.
- The domain is using the intended document root and has not been pointed at a directory served as static files.
WordPress support guidance specifically recommends checking the PHP handler configuration and the web-server error log when PHP files download. Give support the domain name, the exact URL, the time of a failed request, and whether other PHP files show the same behavior. That information is more useful than sending a screenshot of the login page.
Understand the server stack before changing anything

Do not copy an Apache rule into an Nginx configuration, or an Nginx FastCGI example into IIS. The correct repair depends on the stack, and a syntactically valid rule in the wrong server can take the whole site offline.

Use the symptom pattern to choose the escalation path

This distinction prevents a common waste of time: trying WordPress plugins or password resets while the server is still returning raw PHP.
Protect the site while it is misconfigured
A PHP source download can reveal code that was never meant to be public, including database connection details in configuration files if an attacker can request them. Treat the incident as a hosting security problem until PHP execution is restored.
- Ask the host to restrict public access to PHP files or temporarily place the site behind an appropriate maintenance response while they repair the handler.
- Do not create a public
phpinfo()page as a permanent test. If a host uses one for diagnosis, remove it immediately after the test and do not leave it indexed or accessible without protection. - Do not paste downloaded PHP source into support forums or public tickets. It may contain salts, database credentials, API keys, or private business logic.
- If configuration contents may have been exposed, have the administrator review access logs and rotate credentials after service is restored.
The host should determine from logs whether a browser received source code, an attachment generated by a rule, or a cached response. Preserve the original response headers and timestamp if your support team requests them.
After PHP execution is restored: fix login-only failures
Once the front page and another PHP endpoint render normally, retry the login in a private window. Only now do the WordPress-specific checks below.

Clear stale cookies and cache
Delete cookies for the site or use a private window, then clear the browser cache. A stale session cookie can keep redirecting a login request even though PHP is healthy. Purge any full-page or reverse-proxy cache that may have stored an old download response.
Exclude the login route from page caching
Page caches must not cache the login form or authenticated-cookie responses. Exclude wp-login.php, the login URL, and requests carrying WordPress authentication cookies according to your cache product’s rules. Purge existing objects after changing the exclusions.

Check firewall and security rules
Web-application firewalls, security plugins, and host-level rules can block or rewrite login requests. Review events for the exact time of a failed attempt and temporarily test with the relevant rule disabled only if your administrator can do so safely. Restore protection after identifying the rule and add a narrow exception rather than disabling the firewall globally.
Verify URL and proxy settings
A mismatch between the WordPress site URL, home URL, HTTPS termination, and reverse-proxy headers can create login redirects or rejected cookies. Have the administrator compare the configured URLs with the public address and confirm that the proxy passes the original scheme and host consistently. Do not change URLs blindly while the site is still unable to execute PHP.

When a warning points at wp-login.php
Sometimes PHP executes, but a warning identifies wp-login.php in the message. The named file may only be where the failure became visible. WordPress support documentation notes that warnings about headers can originate in an earlier-loaded file, commonly wp-config.php.
Check for output before headers
Inspect the file named before the warning’s “output started at” location. Remove accidental spaces or blank lines before the opening <?php tag and after a closing PHP tag. A UTF-8 byte-order mark (BOM) at the start of a PHP file can also send output before WordPress sets cookies or redirects.

Download a backup before editing configuration files, use a plain-text editor that can save UTF-8 without a BOM, and make one change at a time. If the warning disappears after correcting the earlier file, do not modify wp-login.php unnecessarily.
What not to do
- Do not edit or replace core login code first. A server that does not execute PHP will not be fixed by a different copy of the same script.
- Do not assume a password problem. A password error produces an HTML response; a download indicates a delivery or execution problem.
- Do not leave diagnostic files online. Remove test scripts and review permissions when testing is complete.
- Do not disable every security layer at once. That removes useful evidence and increases exposure. Change one narrowly scoped rule, test, and restore it if it is not the cause.
A concise recovery checklist
- Confirm whether the front page and another PHP URL also download.
- Identify whether one domain, one account, or the entire server is affected.
- In Plesk, enable PHP Support under Domains > domain > PHP Settings, or ask the host to enable the equivalent setting.
- Have the administrator verify the Apache, Nginx/PHP-FPM, or IIS handler and inspect the web-server error log.
- Retest until PHP returns an HTML page and no PHP source is downloadable.
- Only then clear cookies, purge caches, review firewall events, and verify URL/proxy settings for a login-only problem.
- If headers are mentioned, inspect the earlier file named in the warning for whitespace or a UTF-8 BOM.
- Remove any temporary diagnostic endpoint and rotate exposed credentials if source code may have been accessible.
When to hand the issue to hosting support
Escalate immediately if you do not administer the server, if PHP support is enabled but files still download, if multiple domains are affected, or if the error log shows FPM, FastCGI, permissions, or service failures. Include the domain, failing URL, affected PHP paths, approximate UTC time, recent server changes, and whether the front page is affected. The practical fix is a working PHP installation and handler; managed WordPress hosting or responsive hosting support is appropriate when those components are outside your control.
