Microsoft identifies it as E_INVALIDARG (an invalid argument); in a WSUS-specific case, an incorrect proxy server name in the user’s Internet Explorer proxy settings produces this code. Corrupted files, permissions, incorrect policy, unavailable WSUS endpoints, BITS failures and damaged update-agent state can lead to the same result. Work through the evidence-led checks below instead of resetting the cache immediately.
First, confirm the code and the update source
The title is sometimes written as 0X800070057, with an extra zero. Microsoft’s documented Windows and WSUS HRESULT is 0x80070057. If your event or Windows Update dialog really contains the longer value, copy the complete line before changing anything; a different code may require a different procedure.

WSUS clients can receive updates from a company’s intranet WSUS server or directly from Microsoft Update. The correct repair depends on which source is active. A cache reset on a healthy client with a bad proxy or wrong policy will not solve the underlying failure.

0x80070057 is associated with corrupted files, permission problems and incorrect system configuration in Microsoft’s general Windows Update guidance. The WSUS client-agent interpretation is more specific: E_INVALIDARG, including a case where the configured proxy server name is invalid. The code can therefore appear at different stages of the transaction.

| Failure branch | What you may observe | Most useful evidence | Likely repair location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client installation | The update downloads but fails while Windows is installing it. | WindowsUpdateClient operational events, System events and Application events at the same time. | Client files, permissions or Windows Update state. |
| Download or BITS | Detection succeeds, but the payload never finishes downloading or repeatedly pauses. | BITS events, service status and WindowsUpdateClient events. | Client services, transfer state or network path. |
| Policy or update source | The device contacts an unexpected service, or no intranet endpoint is reachable. | Applied Group Policy and the Windows Update service list. | Client policy or the WSUS server assignment. |
| Proxy or network | WSUS detection fails immediately, or the client cannot retrieve its identity file. | Proxy settings and a direct test of the WSUS URL. | User proxy, WinHTTP proxy, DNS, firewall or routing. |
| WSUS server | Several clients fail against the same server while other update sources work. | Server availability and client reachability tests from an affected machine. | WSUS server, IIS or the network between client and server. |
Collect evidence before changing the client
Read Windows Update operational events
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > WindowsUpdateClient > Operational.
- Filter or review entries at the time of the failure. Record the event ID, the full error text, the update identifier and any server or proxy name shown.
- Check Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application for matching service, networking, permissions or file errors.
Do not clear these logs before recording them. The first useful clue is usually the event sequence: detection, connection, transfer, verification and installation.
Confirm applied policy
On a managed PC, open an elevated Command Prompt and run gpresult /h %TEMP%gp-report.html. Open the generated report and verify that the intended intranet Microsoft update service policy is applied. If policy is missing or points to an old server name, correct the Group Policy assignment first and allow it to refresh with gpupdate /force. Do not permanently edit local registry values to fight a policy that will simply overwrite them.
Check whether the client uses WSUS or Microsoft Update
Use an elevated PowerShell window to inspect the Windows Update service manager:

$manager = New-Object -ComObject Microsoft.Update.ServiceManager
$manager.Services | Select-Object Name, OffersWindowsUpdates, IsDefaultAUService
A service named Microsoft Update with OffersWindowsUpdates : True indicates that the device is using Microsoft Update. An intranet service entry indicates a WSUS or other managed source. If the output does not match your organization’s design, resolve policy and enrollment before trying file repairs.
Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
On current Windows 11 releases, start the troubleshooter through the Get Help app. You can also open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update, select Run, follow the prompts and restart when it finishes. Check for updates again after the restart.
The troubleshooter automatically runs diagnostics and attempts common repairs, but it cannot correct an unreachable WSUS server or an incorrectly administered proxy. Keep the event evidence even if the troubleshooter reports that it made a change.

Test WSUS reachability and the proxy path
Request the WSUS identity file
From the affected client, test the endpoint assigned by policy. Replace the host and port with the values shown in your environment:
http://<WSUSSERVER:port>/iuident.cab
Enter the URL in a browser or request it with your organization’s approved command-line tool. A successful response shows that name resolution, routing, the listening port and basic HTTP access are working. Failure points toward DNS, firewall, routing, server availability or proxy configuration; it is not evidence that the Windows Update cache is corrupt.
Verify user and WinHTTP proxy settings
Microsoft documents an incorrect proxy server name in the user’s Internet Explorer proxy settings as a WSUS-specific cause of 0x80070057. Even on current Windows versions, older WinINet settings can remain relevant to legacy WSUS components.

- Open Internet Options by searching Windows for that name, select the Connections tab, then choose LAN settings.
- Check whether Use a proxy server for your LAN is enabled. Confirm the server name, port and any bypass list with your administrator. Remove an obsolete name only when policy does not require it.
- In an elevated Command Prompt, run
netsh winhttp show proxyto display the WinHTTP proxy used by services. - Compare the WinHTTP setting with the organization’s intended configuration. Do not run
netsh winhttp reset proxyon a managed device unless your administrator confirms that a direct connection is required; resetting a legitimate corporate proxy can break other services. - Retest the
iuident.cabURL and then check for updates.
If the URL works only when the proxy is bypassed, involve the network administrator. The correct solution may be a proxy name correction, an allow-list entry or a server-side routing change rather than a local Windows repair.
Check BITS and Windows Update services
WSUS client troubleshooting separates Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), the Windows Update agent service and the Automatic Update Agent store. A service can be running while its transfer queue or local state is damaged, so inspect both status and events.
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Confirm that Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update are not disabled. Their startup type and start/stop history should match your organization’s policy.
- In Event Viewer, inspect the BITS operational log and the WindowsUpdateClient log around the failure.
- If a service is stopped unexpectedly, start it once and retry detection. Record any service-control error instead of repeatedly restarting it.
Repeated BITS errors with a reachable WSUS URL suggest a transfer or permissions problem. A Windows Update service that starts and immediately stops points to local state, dependencies or system-file damage and should be investigated before changing the server configuration.

Repair Windows system files
When the logs indicate missing or corrupted protected files, run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, note the exact result and restart if Windows requests it. If SFC reports that it could not repair files, preserve the CBS log and follow your organization’s supported component-repair process rather than deleting system files manually. SFC addresses file corruption; it will not fix a wrong proxy name, an incorrect WSUS policy or an offline server.
Reset Windows Update and WSUS client state carefully
A reset is appropriate when the endpoint is reachable, policy is correct, services are healthy and the evidence points to a damaged local update store. Preserve the event logs and write down the current WSUS and proxy settings first. On a standalone or approved test client, an administrator can use this sequence:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the update-related services:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
- Rename the local stores so Windows can create fresh copies. Renaming is safer than deleting because it preserves a rollback copy:
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
- Restart the services:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
- Restart Windows, allow the policy to refresh, and trigger a new detection from Settings > Windows Update. On a managed device, use the organization’s approved detection command or management console rather than an unsupported script.
The first scan after a reset can take longer because the agent rebuilds local metadata. Do not delete the renamed folders until the client has completed a successful detection and installation cycle and your retention policy allows their removal. If the same error returns immediately with the same proxy or endpoint named in the log, undoing the cache reset will not address that configuration fault.
Quick Recap
Decide whether the fix is client-side or server-side
| Evidence | Action |
|---|---|
| Only one client fails; its proxy, policy or local events identify a problem. | Repair that client’s settings, services or files, then retest. |
| Multiple clients fail against one intranet endpoint, while Microsoft Update works elsewhere. | Have the WSUS administrator check server availability, name resolution, listening port and network access. |
| The identity-file request fails by name but works by a verified address. | Investigate DNS or the configured server name; do not reset update files first. |
| Policy assigns one server but the service list shows another source. | Correct Group Policy, enrollment or competing management configuration. |
| BITS events show transfer failures while the WSUS URL is reachable. | Investigate BITS state, permissions and network controls before changing WSUS approvals. |
| SFC reports unrepaired corruption and update services remain unstable. | Escalate for supported Windows component repair or servicing, keeping the logs and SFC result. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Resetting the cache first: a cache reset cannot repair a misspelled proxy host, wrong policy or unreachable server.
- Testing only in a browser: browser access may use user settings while Windows services use WinHTTP. Check both paths.
- Changing policy locally: domain policy can overwrite local settings and make troubleshooting results misleading.
- Deleting logs or renamed stores immediately: those files may be needed to identify whether the repair worked.
- Assuming the code proves malware: Microsoft’s classifications cover invalid arguments, corruption, permissions and configuration; the code alone does not identify a security incident.
- Ignoring the exact event text: the same HRESULT can appear at installation, download, proxy and policy stages, each requiring a different fix.
