The Xbox or Microsoft Store code 0x80070057 usually means an invalid parameter, failed update, damaged package, permission problem, or incorrect Windows configuration interrupted the download. It is a broad failure signal rather than proof that one specific Xbox component is broken. On a Windows PC, work through the fixes below in order: restart, update Windows and Store apps, run the built-in troubleshooters, repair or reset Xbox and Microsoft Store, reinstall Xbox, check Windows Update and system files, then investigate temporary files, security software, connectivity and Gaming Services. If the download is on an Xbox console, use the console-specific Xbox Support flow instead; Windows PowerShell and app-reset instructions do not apply.
Check whether you are troubleshooting Windows or an Xbox console
These instructions target the Xbox app or Microsoft Store on a Windows PC, including Game Pass downloads. The Windows app stack, Windows Update service, Store packages and Gaming Services are separate from the operating system on an Xbox console.

- Windows PC: Continue with the sequence in this article. You will use Windows Settings, Microsoft Store and, only near the end, an elevated PowerShell window.
- Xbox console: Do not run Windows commands or try to reset Windows apps. Microsoft directs console users with game or app installation problems to support.xbox.com and its console troubleshooting flow.
Before changing anything, note whether the failure happens in the Xbox app, in Microsoft Store, or in both. Also record whether every download fails or only one game. That distinction helps you tell a package problem from a broader Windows or service problem.

Microsoft associates 0x80070057 with Windows Update failures involving corrupted files, permission issues or incorrect system configuration. Microsoft also describes the code in Edge installation guidance as an invalid-parameter installation or update error. Those descriptions explain the kind of operation that failed, but they do not identify one guaranteed cause for an Xbox download.

In practical terms, the code can appear when the Xbox or Store package is damaged, a Windows component or update cache is inconsistent, an account lacks access to a required location, a service is stopped, or the surrounding environment prevents installation. A network interruption, insufficient storage, or security software blocking a package can produce the same visible result. Treat the code as a starting point for diagnosis, not as a verdict that your PC needs new hardware or a particular registry edit.
Compare the four cause categories
| Category | What may be wrong | Useful clue | Best first response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software state | The Xbox, Microsoft Store or Gaming Services package is damaged or incompletely registered. | The Store or Xbox app opens, but downloads repeatedly fail or the failure follows an interrupted update. | Repair, then reset the affected apps; reinstall Xbox if necessary. |
| Windows integrity | System files, Windows Update components or an update cache are corrupted. | Windows updates also fail, or more than one Store app cannot install. | Install pending updates, check the Windows Update service and run System File Checker. |
| Permissions and configuration | Access rights, installation settings or another system configuration is invalid. | The error appears immediately when installation starts, or only under one Windows account. | Use the built-in troubleshooters and app Repair/Reset before making deeper changes. |
| Environment | A connection, available disk space, temporary files, antivirus/firewall or a stopped service interferes with the transfer. | The download pauses, fails at different percentages, or works after an environmental change. | Check storage, temporary files, services, connection and short diagnostic tests of third-party security software. |
Microsoft’s guidance supports these as diagnostic categories, not as a promise that one category explains every case. Avoid deleting registry entries or buying hardware solely because this code appeared.
Windows fix sequence
Perform the following steps in order. After each step, retry the same download. If it succeeds, stop; changing additional components can create a new problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Restart Windows and retry
Choose Start > Power > Restart, wait for Windows to sign in completely, open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, and start the download again. A restart clears a transient installer state and reloads services that may have been left in an incomplete state. If the download fails again with the same code, continue rather than repeatedly restarting.
2. Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Open Windows Update (on some Windows 10 builds this is under Update & Security).
- Select Check for updates and install everything offered.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then check once more until no additional update is waiting.
Microsoft recommends checking Windows updates for update-related failures because the Xbox and Store depend on current Windows components. Do not interrupt a restart or shut down while an update is being applied.

3. Update Microsoft Store apps
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library (called Downloads and updates in some older layouts).
- Choose Get updates and allow Store updates to finish.
- Close and reopen Store, then retry the Xbox download.
If Store itself will not open, continue with the troubleshooting and Repair/Reset steps instead of repeatedly clicking the download button.
4. Run the built-in troubleshooters
Windows includes separate troubleshooters for update and Store-app failures. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. The exact labels can vary by Windows release.
- Run Windows Update, apply any recommended action, and restart if asked.
- Run Windows Store Apps (or the similarly named Store-app troubleshooter).
- Open the Get Help app if Windows presents it. If its troubleshooter cannot resolve the issue, select the specific Windows Update problem it lists and follow the supplied steps.
A troubleshooter may report that it made no change. That result does not prove the Xbox package is healthy; it simply means the automated checks did not find or repair a recognized condition.
5. Repair Xbox and Microsoft Store, then reset if required
Repair is the least disruptive app action because it attempts to correct the installation without immediately removing the app’s stored state. Reset is more thorough and can remove app data, so use it only after Repair.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Windows 10 may show Apps & features instead.
- Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu or Advanced options, and select Repair.
- Restart the Xbox app and test the download.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset. Sign in again if the app asks.
- Repeat the Repair, then Reset process for Microsoft Store.
Repair or reset only the affected apps. Do not reset unrelated Store applications as a general experiment, because that can remove their local settings without addressing the download failure.

6. Reinstall the Xbox app
If Repair and Reset did not change the result, remove and install the Xbox app again through Microsoft Store.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Xbox and choose Uninstall, if that option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, search for the Xbox app, and select Install.
- Sign in with the account that owns the Game Pass subscription or game license, then retry the download.
Reinstalling Xbox does not repair every Windows or Gaming Services condition. If Store cannot install the app again, proceed to the service and system-file checks rather than looping through uninstall attempts.
7. Confirm Windows Update is running
The Windows Update service is involved in update and installation workflows. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- If its status is stopped, select it and choose Start.
- If it is running, choose Restart from the service menu.
- Leave its startup configuration at the Windows-managed setting unless a support professional has given you a specific reason to change it.
Close Services, restart Windows, and test the download. A service that starts and then stops can indicate a deeper Windows integrity or configuration issue, which is why the next check is important.
8. Check protected system files with System File Checker
Microsoft recommends System File Checker for 0x80070057 update failures. Run it from an elevated terminal so it can inspect protected files.

- Open Start and type Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Choose Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is scanning.
- Restart Windows after the command finishes, then retry the Xbox download.
The scan may report that it found and repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair everything. Follow the result it displays; do not assume a successful command guarantees that the Store package or Gaming Services is fixed.
9. Check temporary files, storage, connection and security software
Microsoft’s installation guidance includes checking temporary files, the update service, and possible interference from third-party antivirus or firewall software. Work through these checks without weakening the system permanently.
Check available storage and temporary files
- Open Settings > System > Storage and verify that the drive used for Xbox installations has enough free space for the game and its update.
- Open the temporary-files view, review the categories, and remove only files you recognize as safe to remove. Close installers and other apps first.
- Restart Windows and try the download again.
Removing temporary data is a housekeeping step; it is not a guarantee of faster performance or a fix for every installation error.
Check the connection
Confirm that the PC is online, that other pages or services load normally, and that the download is not being interrupted by a disconnected Wi-Fi link. If the failure occurs at different points, wait until the connection is stable before retrying. A connection check cannot repair a damaged app package, but it prevents a network interruption from being mistaken for one.
Test third-party security software cautiously
Antivirus or firewall software from another vendor can sometimes block an installer or its service. If you use such software, perform only a short diagnostic test: pause its relevant protection, retry the download once, and immediately restore protection whether or not the test changes the result. Do not browse, open unknown files, or leave the PC unprotected while testing. If disabling protection makes no difference, turn it back on and investigate the app and Windows components instead.

10. Reinstall Gaming Services only as an advanced step
Gaming Services is a separate Windows package used by Xbox downloads. A Microsoft Q&A answer documents the following PowerShell sequence, but it is community guidance rather than a formal Microsoft support article. Use it only after the standard steps above, verify each command before running it, and use an elevated PowerShell window.
- Open Start, type PowerShell, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers. This removes the Gaming Services package for all users on the PC. - After the command completes, run
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN. This opens the Gaming Services page in Microsoft Store. - Select Install, wait for the package to finish, restart Windows, and retry the Xbox download.
Do not paste these commands into an Xbox console, a standard non-elevated prompt, or a random script. If PowerShell reports an error, stop and record the exact message rather than trying unrelated removal commands. The community procedure may not resolve a failure caused by Windows Update, permissions, storage or connectivity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the failure pattern to choose the next action
- Only one game fails: Check the game’s required storage and retry after restarting. If other Xbox downloads work, the issue may be specific to that package or its update rather than the entire Store.
- Every Xbox download fails but ordinary Store apps install: Complete Xbox Repair/Reset, reinstall Xbox, and reserve Gaming Services reinstallation for the final advanced step.
- Several Store apps and Windows updates fail: Prioritize Windows Update, the built-in troubleshooters, the Windows Update service and
sfc /scannow. - The error appears immediately: Focus on Repair/Reset, permissions and configuration checks before repeatedly restarting the download.
- The error appears after a partial download: Check temporary files, free storage, connection stability and security-software interference, then retry from a clean restart.
- The code disappears but installation still fails with another message: Record the new code and follow the guidance for that code; do not assume every installation error has the same cause.
What not to promise or change blindly
No Microsoft material establishes a prevalence percentage for 0x80070057 in Xbox downloads, and the code does not identify one universal repair. A single command, registry edit, or hardware purchase cannot be promised to fix every case. Keep a note of which step changed the behavior, restore any temporarily disabled security protection, and avoid deleting system packages beyond the documented Gaming Services procedure.
If the Windows sequence fails, collect the exact app involved, whether Microsoft Store also fails, the point in the download where the code appears, the Windows version, available storage, and the results shown by the troubleshooters and System File Checker. That information makes a Microsoft support case more actionable than repeating the same download attempt.
For Xbox console downloads
On an Xbox console, use the installation-problem flow at support.xbox.com. Console storage, account, network and system-cache controls are different from Windows Settings and PowerShell. Applying the Windows app-reset or Gaming Services commands to a console is not possible and will not help.
Quick Recap
After you have tried the manual Windows steps, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for common Windows problems: it can address more than 100 issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL files, while also offering settings, temporary-file, privacy and vulnerability checks. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash or download failure.
