Error 8015D000 usually means the Xbox 360 cannot complete Microsoft account authentication—not necessarily that your password is wrong. First confirm that the account works in a web browser. If two-step verification is enabled, create a Microsoft account app password and use it on the Xbox 360. If sign-in still fails, remove the locally stored profile with Delete Profile Only and download it again.
This applies to original Xbox 360 consoles and, in some cases, the Xbox 360 environment used by backward-compatible games on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.

What error 8015D000 means
The Xbox 360 message—“There’s a problem with the credentials that you’re using to sign in”—is a broad authentication error. It can occur when the console rejects or cannot process the credentials, account security requirements, or locally stored profile data.
Possible causes include:
- An incorrect or outdated Microsoft account email address.
- A password mismatch or recently changed password.
- Two-step verification that the Xbox 360 cannot complete through its older sign-in flow.
- A mistyped, revoked, expired, or incorrectly generated app password.
- An account lock, suspension, recovery request, or verification problem.
- Stale or corrupted profile data stored on the console.
- A temporary Xbox service or network problem.
- An account alias change or confusion between multiple Microsoft accounts.
Microsoft lists a dedicated support page for error 8015D000. The code should not be treated as proof that the typed password is simply wrong.

Try this first: verify the account and use an app password
- On a phone or computer, sign in at Microsoft account security using the account associated with the Xbox profile.
- Confirm that the email address is the account that owns the gamertag. A gamertag is not necessarily the Microsoft account username.
- If you cannot sign in, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper and account-recovery guidance before troubleshooting the console.
- Check whether two-step verification is enabled.
- Check the Xbox service status page for an active incident.
When two-step verification is active, the Xbox 360 may be unable to complete the newer interactive verification process. Microsoft provides an app-password method for older devices and applications.
How to use an Xbox 360 app password
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account on a phone or computer.
- Open the account’s security settings and locate the app-password option.
- Create a new app password. Microsoft’s current instructions are on its Xbox 360 app-password page.
- On the Xbox 360, choose Download Profile or begin signing in to the existing profile.
- Enter the normal Microsoft account email address as the username.
- Enter the generated app password in the password field—not the normal Microsoft account password.
App passwords are sensitive credentials. Do not publish or share one, and save it only on a personally owned console. If the app-password option is unavailable, do not invent an alternate workaround: account-security availability and labels can change. Check the current Microsoft security page or contact Xbox Support.
If you do not use two-step verification
Try the normal Microsoft account password after confirming the email address. If the password was recently changed, use the new one. If the account works in a browser but the Xbox 360 still returns 8015D000, an app password may still be offered and can be worth trying as a legacy-device compatibility measure.
Do not weaken the account password merely because the console is old. Claims that a short password without symbols reliably fixes 8015D000 are unverified community advice, not Microsoft guidance. Changing a password is appropriate when it is genuinely forgotten, rejected everywhere, or suspected to be compromised—not as a guaranteed Xbox 360 fix.

Remove and redownload the Xbox 360 profile
If the account works elsewhere and the problem appears limited to one console or local profile, refresh the stored profile:
- From the Xbox 360 dashboard, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Storage.
- Choose the storage device containing the profile.
- Open Profiles.
- Select the affected profile.
- Choose Delete.
- Select Delete Profile Only.
- Restart the console.
- Choose Download Profile and sign in again, using the app password if applicable.
Do not select the option that deletes the profile and associated content. “Delete Profile Only” removes the locally stored account profile while preserving local saved games and other content. Dashboard labels may vary slightly depending on the console and storage device. If you are unsure which deletion option is displayed, stop rather than guessing.
Removing a local profile does not transfer ownership of purchases, achievements, or progress to another Microsoft account. Do not create a new account expecting it to restore the old profile.

Clear the Xbox 360 system cache
Clearing temporary system data is a secondary, generally non-destructive step. It is not a guaranteed fix for an authentication problem.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Storage.
- Highlight the storage device.
- Press Y for device options.
- Select Clear System Cache and confirm.
Clearing the system cache does not format the storage device or delete saved games and achievements. Allow an update or download to finish first, and do not confuse this option with formatting. There is no verified advantage to clearing the cache three times; one operation is sufficient as a troubleshooting step.
Check the network—but separate connection problems from authentication problems
A network failure can prevent sign-in, although 8015D000 is primarily an account-authentication error. Test the Xbox Live connection from the console’s network settings, then:
- Restart the Xbox 360 and home router.
- Use a wired connection temporarily if available.
- Avoid hotel, school, captive-portal, or heavily filtered networks.
- Check Xbox service status before repeatedly retrying or deleting a profile.
Arbitrary DNS changes should not be a primary fix unless testing has identified a specific DNS or network-resolution problem.

Important account and compatibility edge cases
The account works on Xbox One, Xbox Series, or the web
A successful sign-in on a modern Xbox or in a browser proves that the account is accessible in that environment. It does not prove that the Xbox 360 authentication flow will accept the same credential method. Confirm the account, try an app password when applicable, then remove and redownload the local Xbox 360 profile.
You changed the email address or have multiple accounts
Microsoft accounts can have multiple aliases. You may be entering an old email address, a different account, or a gamertag instead of the current sign-in identifier. Check which account displays the relevant gamertag and purchases before changing anything. Child accounts and family-group restrictions can also require the account holder or family organizer to resolve verification issues.
You cannot access the account at all
Stop troubleshooting the console and use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper. It provides paths for password resets, username recovery, verification-code problems, account recovery, and related access issues. If you no longer control the original email address or phone number, local Xbox steps cannot restore account ownership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fixes that should not be your first choice
- Disabling two-step verification: this reduces account security and should not precede trying an app password.
- Repeated rapid sign-in attempts: repeated failures can trigger additional account-security controls.
- Weakening the password: there is no reliable evidence that a particular length or character set fixes this code.
- Formatting storage: this is unnecessary for a sign-in error and risks local data.
- Creating a new Microsoft account: old purchases, achievements, licenses, and saved progress do not automatically move to it.
- Turning off recurring billing: the available evidence does not establish it as a general cause of 8015D000.
When to contact Microsoft
Contact Xbox Support or Microsoft account support when:
- You cannot access the account in a browser.
- Sign-in tools identify a lock, suspension, recovery, or verification problem.
- A fresh app password fails after the local profile has been removed and redownloaded.
- The same error occurs on multiple Xbox 360 consoles.
- Xbox service status shows an active incident.
- You suspect account compromise or no longer control the recovery methods.
- You are unsure whether deleting a profile could affect valuable local data.
Do not assume that Xbox 360 online sign-in has permanently ended based on this error alone. Check the live service-status page and current official Microsoft announcements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is error 8015D000 always caused by a wrong password?
No. It is a broad Xbox 360 authentication error that can involve account aliases, two-step verification, app-password compatibility, profile data, network conditions, or account access problems.
Do I need an app password on every Xbox 360?
No. Try the normal password when two-step verification is not involved. An app password is mainly useful when the older console cannot complete modern account-security verification.
Will deleting my Xbox 360 profile erase saved games?
Choose only Delete Profile Only. That removes the local profile while preserving local content. Do not choose the option that deletes the profile and associated content.
