Xbox error 0x8007 is incomplete. The missing hexadecimal digits and the device showing the message determine the correct repair. Copy the entire code, note whether it appears on an Xbox console, the Xbox app for Windows, or Microsoft Store, then follow the matching path below. The documented code 0x80070490 can affect console startup, the Guide, game launches, and Windows devices, while other 0x8007-family codes may have different causes.

First, identify the complete error and where it appears

A prefix such as 0x8007 is not a diagnosis. Open the message details, take a screenshot or write down every digit after the prefix, and record the failure stage. The same beginning can appear in unrelated Store, Xbox-app, Gaming Services, or console messages, so copying the complete hexadecimal value prevents you from applying the wrong repair.

  • Store visibility: Microsoft Store cannot find the game or app, or the listing is unavailable when you search.
  • App launch: the Xbox app or Microsoft Store opens and then closes, hangs, or fails to load.
  • Game installation or update: a download starts, stops, remains queued, or returns an error while installing or updating.
  • Console startup or Guide: the Xbox console cannot start normally, the Guide will not open, or a game or app will not launch.

Also note the exact device: Xbox console model, Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, Xbox app for Windows, or Microsoft Store. Write down whether the failure happens for one game or every game, whether another Microsoft account works, and whether a restart has already been attempted. Those details separate an account or availability problem from an app-state or Gaming Services problem.

Bethesda Support describes the full 0x80070490 message this way: “You see the following error code and message when you attempt to either open the Guide, turn on your Xbox console, or try to launch a game or app on your Windows device: Something went wrong… 0x80070490.” That wording covers several symptoms, so do not assume that every 0x8007 code has the same fix.

Repair the Xbox app or Microsoft Store on Windows

Microsoft’s Store guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Work through these steps in order. Stop when the original action succeeds; a reset or reinstall is not necessary if a simpler step resolves the problem. If a step produces a new, complete code, record it and use that code for the next diagnosis.

  1. Sign in to the intended Microsoft account. Open Microsoft Store and the Xbox app, and verify that both use the account that owns the game or subscription. A different account can prevent authorization even when Windows itself is signed in. If the game was purchased by another family member, confirm that the account with the entitlement is the one being used for the installation.
  2. Close and reopen the affected app. Exit the Xbox app and Microsoft Store completely, then launch the app again and retry the same install or launch action. This clears a temporary hung session without changing app data. If the window will not close normally, end the app from Windows Task Manager, then reopen it.
  3. Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it. A pending restart can block Store installation until the update cycle finishes. Do not assume that downloading an update is enough; complete the requested restart before testing again.
  4. Check compatibility. Confirm that the game or app supports your Windows edition and device. Microsoft lists device compatibility as one reason an item may not appear or install. Hardware, operating-system edition, and account restrictions can all affect whether the Store offers an item.
  5. Update Microsoft Store. Open Store, choose Library, and select Get updates. Let Store update itself and its installed components before trying the Xbox app again. If updates are queued, allow them to finish rather than starting several game installs simultaneously.
  6. Run the game-install troubleshooting guidance. Use the troubleshooting option presented for the failed Xbox or Store installation and follow its detected actions. Record any new code rather than treating the original 0x8007 prefix as the full diagnosis. A troubleshooter result that says the app is unavailable points toward account, region, family, or compatibility checks rather than file repair.
  7. Repair the app. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds), select Xbox or Microsoft Store, choose Advanced options, and select Repair. Retry the install after Windows reports that the operation is complete. Repair is designed to correct the app installation while preserving a lower-impact path than Reset.
  8. Reset only if Repair did not help. Return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Reset is a stronger action than Repair and can clear the app’s local state, so expect to sign in again and recheck settings. It does not replace a Windows reset and should not be confused with factory-resetting an Xbox console.
  9. Reinstall the affected app. If the Xbox app still will not launch or install games, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and install the current Xbox app again through Microsoft’s approved Store path. Reinstalling is an escalation after Repair and Reset, not the first step. Recheck the Microsoft account after reinstalling because authorization state may need to be restored.

These actions are deliberately layered. Updating first avoids repairing an outdated package; Repair attempts to preserve local state; Reset rebuilds that state; and reinstalling replaces the package only after the less destructive options fail.

When Microsoft Store is stuck or cannot find the app

If Store remains blank, will not load, or cannot locate an app, clear its cache with Microsoft’s wsreset.exe procedure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe then select OK.
  3. Wait while the blank command window runs and closes by itself. Do not close it while it is working.
  4. Reopen Microsoft Store and search for the app again.

Microsoft lists several non-corruption reasons an app may be missing or unavailable: regional availability, family settings, the app having been removed, device incompatibility, a restart still pending after Windows updates, and Microsoft-account authorization. Check each of these before repeatedly resetting Store. If the listing is restricted in your region or by family settings, cache clearing cannot make it appear.

Fix Xbox app game-install errors on a PC

Run Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC

For a game that fails during installation or updating in the Xbox app, use the Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC before reinstalling Windows components manually. Bethesda Support says the tool automatically runs checks and installs needed Gaming Services updates, which can resolve many game-installation and update issues.

  1. Open the Xbox app for Windows and locate its support or settings area.
  2. Launch Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC and allow it to complete its checks and updates. Keep the window open until it reports that the checks are complete.
  3. Restart the Xbox app after the tool finishes, then retry the same game installation. If Windows requests a restart, complete it before trying again.
  4. If the game still fails, use the Xbox App for Windows troubleshooter recommended by Bethesda Support and follow the results it provides.

The repair tool is identified as beta, and its command prompt currently displays English only. That language limitation does not change the repair sequence, but it explains why the diagnostic window may not match your Windows display language. The tool targets Gaming Services; it is not a replacement for checking account ownership, Store availability, Windows updates, or app compatibility.

Do not delete Gaming Services folders or install random replacement packages while diagnosing the error. Such changes can create additional installation problems and make it harder for support to identify the original failure. Use the official repair tool first, then preserve the exact message and troubleshooting result if the install still does not work.

Recover an Xbox console showing 0x80070490

For the documented console case, begin with a complete power cycle. This is different from briefly pressing the Xbox button or selecting a normal restart. It is the first recovery action because it does not require a factory reset or recovery media.

  1. Hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds, until the console shuts down.
  2. Unplug the console’s power cable.
  3. Wait 10 seconds with the cable disconnected.
  4. Reconnect the power cable.
  5. Press the Xbox button to start the console and retry opening the Guide or launching the game or app.

Use the full sequence even if the console appears to have turned off already. The unplugged interval is part of the procedure; do not reconnect immediately. Once the console restarts, test the same action that produced the message. If the Guide opens but one game still fails, record that distinction because it indicates a different failure stage from a console that cannot open the Guide at all.

If the Guide still will not open

If the console remains unable to open the Guide after the power cycle, Xbox recovery instructions include a Reset using a USB flash drive route. This is an escalation step for a console that cannot reach the normal on-screen reset controls.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  • Read the current Xbox factory-reset instructions before preparing recovery media; the exact files and button sequence can change.
  • Use a USB flash drive only as directed by those current instructions. The cited support guidance confirms the USB recovery route but does not establish a required capacity, file system, or drive model.
  • Understand the data consequence before confirming a reset. Factory-reset choices can remove local console data, so ensure you know which games, saves, profiles, and settings are synchronized or backed up.
  • Do not use a generic Windows installer or an unofficial download in place of the Xbox recovery package. If the console cannot complete the official process, contact Xbox Support with the complete code and the steps already attempted.

A USB recovery is not the same as plugging in a drive to install a normal game. It is a specialized recovery path for a console that cannot use its regular interface. Because current Xbox instructions control the required package and button sequence, verify those instructions immediately before starting rather than relying on an old walkthrough.

Choose the least destructive next step

Symptom Recommended next action Why this order matters
Store cannot find the Xbox app or a game Check account, region, family settings, compatibility, pending restart, then run wsreset.exe Availability and authorization problems can look like installation corruption
Xbox app opens but a game will not install Update Windows and Store, then run Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC Gaming Services is a component of the PC installation path
Xbox app launches but behaves incorrectly Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options > Repair Repair preserves a lower-impact path than Reset
Repair did not change the error Use Advanced options > Reset, then reinstall if needed Reset and reinstall rebuild the app state after the non-destructive checks
Console displays 0x80070490 10-second shutdown, 10-second unplug, reconnect, restart This is the documented first recovery action for the console case
Console cannot open the Guide after power cycling Follow current Xbox USB reset instructions USB recovery is an escalation with greater local-data risk

The comparison is based on device, failure stage, data risk, and required media. Windows Repair, Reset, and reinstall use the PC’s built-in controls and normally require no external media. Console power cycling also requires no media and is low impact. USB recovery is reserved for a console that cannot reach its normal reset interface and carries the greatest local-data risk.

Common mistakes that prolong an 0x8007 error

  • Fixing the prefix instead of the full code: 0x8007 alone cannot distinguish a Store authorization issue from a console startup problem.
  • Applying console instructions to Windows: A Windows Xbox-app failure needs the Windows sequence and Gaming Services checks; unplugging a PC does not perform the console recovery procedure.
  • Resetting before repairing: Use Repair first, then Reset, and reinstall only after those options fail.
  • Ignoring a pending restart: Windows may not complete Store or Gaming Services changes until an update-related restart is finished.
  • Skipping account and availability checks: Region restrictions, family settings, removed apps, incompatibility, and authorization can prevent an item from appearing even when the Store is functioning.
  • Using unverified recovery media: For a console USB reset, rely on current Xbox instructions and do not guess at drive specifications that the support guidance does not provide.
  • Running several fixes at once: Change one layer at a time and retest. Otherwise you cannot tell whether an update, cache reset, Repair, or Gaming Services action resolved the problem.
  • Deleting system components manually: Removing folders or registry entries can turn an app-install problem into a broader Windows servicing problem.

When to escalate to Microsoft or Xbox Support

Escalate with the complete hexadecimal code, device model, Windows version if applicable, failure stage, and a list of the steps that changed nothing. On Windows, include whether wsreset.exe, Store updates, Repair, Reset, reinstall, and Gaming Services Repair Tool were attempted. On a console, state whether the 10-second power cycle completed and whether the Guide was accessible. This information prevents support from sending you through the same generic instructions again.

Include the wording around the code, not just the digits. “Something went wrong” while opening the Guide is materially different from a game that fails only during installation on Windows. Note whether the issue affects one title or every title, and whether the Store listing is visible from another account or device.

Do not treat an 0x8007 message as proof of malware. It is an error identifier associated with a failed Xbox, Store, or Gaming Services operation. Avoid downloading random “fix” utilities or deleting system folders; use the built-in Windows controls and official Xbox recovery process first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Xbox error 0x8007 mean?

0x8007 is only a prefix, not a complete diagnostic code. Copy every hexadecimal digit and note whether the message appears on an Xbox console, the Xbox app for Windows, or Microsoft Store before choosing a fix.

How do I fix Xbox error 0x80070490 on a console?

Hold the front Xbox button for about 10 seconds, unplug the power cable, wait 10 seconds, reconnect it, and restart the console. Retry the Guide or game after the full power cycle.

What should I do if the Xbox Guide will not open?

Complete the 10-second shutdown and 10-second unplug sequence first. If the Guide remains unavailable, follow current Xbox instructions for Reset using a USB flash drive; treat factory reset as an escalation because local data may be removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I repair the Xbox app on Windows?

Go to Settings, Apps, Installed apps, Xbox, Advanced options, and select Repair. If Repair fails, use Reset, then reinstall the app only if necessary.

Why will an Xbox game not install on my PC?

What does wsreset.exe do for Microsoft Store errors?

Press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, select OK, wait for the blank command window to close, and reopen Store. Also check region availability, family settings, compatibility, removed listings, pending restarts, and account authorization.

Do I need a particular USB flash drive for Xbox recovery?

The cited support guidance confirms a USB recovery route but does not specify capacity, file system, or model. Follow the current Xbox reset instructions rather than guessing at drive requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a guaranteed success rate for these fixes?

No universal success rate is documented. The correct path depends on the complete code, device, and failure stage, so stop when a lower-risk step resolves the issue and escalate with your troubleshooting details if it does not.

The Bottom Line

Start with the complete code and device. On Windows, check the Microsoft account, updates, compatibility, Store updates, and wsreset.exe, then use Repair, Reset, and reinstall in that order. For PC game-install failures, run Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC. On a console showing 0x80070490, perform the full 10-second shutdown and 10-second unplug power cycle; use USB reset instructions only if the Guide remains inaccessible.
