First, identify the exact error
Error codes that look alike lead to different fixes. Before changing anything, write down the complete code and the action that failed: launching the Xbox app, installing or updating a Game Pass title, downloading through Microsoft Store, running Gaming Services, or installing Windows updates.

1. Record the context
Take a screenshot or copy the complete message. Note whether the failure occurs during sign-in, a new installation, an update, or immediately after an update. This determines whether you should concentrate on the Xbox/Store client or on Windows Update.
2. Restart Windows
Close the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, and any installer windows. Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart, sign in, and repeat the same action. 3. Check whether the problem is limited to one location

Use a clean boot to isolate software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of startup software and services. Microsoft lists it as a way to isolate background programs that interfere with setup or updates. Use it when the code appears during Windows setup, a system update, or an installation that fails even though services and system files look healthy.
- Save work and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open System Configuration by searching for
msconfig. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services before disabling third-party services. This prevents you from accidentally disabling core Windows services.
- Use the startup controls described by Microsoft for your Windows version, then restart when prompted.
- Retry the failing setup, update, or Xbox installation.
- If the error disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting program is identified.
- Return Windows to normal startup after testing. A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting.
Security software, system-tuning utilities, overlays, and other installers can all be candidates for a conflict, but the clean-boot result—not the name of a particular program—shows whether background software is involved.
Repair or reset the Xbox, Store, and Gaming Services apps
Use these controls when the error is confined to a Windows app and Windows Update itself is working. The exact page names differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so use the app’s entry in Settings rather than relying on an old guide’s screenshot.

Repair first
- Open Settings and select Apps.
- Open Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Find the app named in the error: Xbox, Microsoft Store, or Gaming Services.
- Open its advanced options and select Repair when available.
- Restart Windows and retry the same installation or update.
Repair is the least disruptive option because it attempts to correct the app without deliberately clearing all of its local state.
Reset only when repair fails
- Return to the same advanced-options page.
- Select Reset and confirm the warning.
- Restart Windows, open the app again, and retry.
Reset can remove local app data and preferences. It does not prove that a game account has been suspended, and it does not guarantee that a particular title will install. If only Gaming Services fails, repair or reset that component rather than repeatedly resetting every Microsoft app.
Retest the scope
After a repair or reset, test one small action first: open the Store, open the Xbox app, or check for the game update. If the basic app works but one game still returns the code, record the title, edition, and whether it is an install or update failure before escalating. That information helps support distinguish an app-wide problem from a title-specific package problem.
What to do when the code appears during sign-in or enforcement concerns
0x80070057 is not, by itself, evidence of an Xbox ban. Microsoft’s enforcement documentation describes suspensions and, in extreme cases, device bans for violations of the Microsoft Services Agreement. That enforcement process is separate from the invalid-argument definition of 0x80070057.

If the message explicitly states that an account is suspended, follow the enforcement notice and contact Microsoft through its support process. If it only reports an incorrect parameter while installing, updating, or opening an app, continue with the Windows and app checks in this guide. Do not treat a parameter error as confirmation of an enforcement action.
If the code is actually 0x80070005
Stop using the 0x80070057 branch if the screen shows 0x80070005. Microsoft uses 0x80070005 for access denied, so the relevant investigation is permissions, account access, or a security policy. Capture the exact message and location, then use Microsoft’s access-permission or account-support guidance for that code. Changing Xbox files or resetting Gaming Services will not turn one hexadecimal value into the other.
Common mistakes that prolong the error
- Searching for the typo: an extra zero in
0X800070057leads to irrelevant results. Search and record the documented value0x80070057when that is what the screen shows. - Assuming “denied” means banned: the documented meaning is an invalid argument; enforcement is a separate process.
- Resetting everything at once: changing Windows services, clearing caches, and resetting every app simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
