Xbox error 0x80070057 usually means that an update or installation request contains an invalid parameter or cannot be completed. On a Windows PC, restart first, then troubleshoot Windows Update, verify the Windows Update service, run System File Checker, and repair or reset the Xbox app and Microsoft Store. A Gaming Services reinstall is a later, community-reported fallback—not a first step. If the code appears on an Xbox console, use the console support path instead of applying these Windows commands.
The spelling matters: the documented code is 0x80070057, with a zero after the x. The code does not identify one cause by itself, so diagnose the platform, trigger, scope and affected service before making changes.

What 0x80070057 means
Microsoft’s error table describes 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” In practice, the code can appear when an Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services or Windows Update operation cannot finish. It describes the failed operation, not a specific defective Xbox component.
Why the same code has several possible causes
An installation, download, update and launch request use different Windows components. A failure limited to one game can have a different cause from a failure affecting every Store download. Likewise, an Xbox app message may actually be produced by Microsoft Store or Gaming Services underneath. The code alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Is it a hardware failure or a security warning?
Not by itself. Microsoft classifies this code as an update or installation failure. It is not proof of an Xbox hardware fault, and the number alone does not establish that a PC is infected. Use the steps below to repair the Windows components involved in the failed operation.
Identify the scenario before fixing it
Write down where the message appears and what was happening when it appeared. That determines which procedure is relevant.

Windows PC: complete manual repair procedure
Use an administrator account where a step says elevated. Retry the original Xbox or Store action after each major step; if it succeeds, stop rather than changing additional components.

Step 1: Restart Windows
Save your work, select Start > Power > Restart, sign back in and retry the download, installation or update. A restart clears a pending reboot and can release files or services still held by another process. Microsoft lists restarting as an initial action for this error class.

Step 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, select Run, and apply any recommendation it reports. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.

Allow the tool to finish before testing the Xbox operation. Menu wording can vary slightly by Windows release; choose the Windows Update troubleshooter rather than a generic app troubleshooter.

Step 3: Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install the available updates, and restart if Windows requests it. Retry only after the update process reports that it is complete.

Do not interrupt an update that is actively installing.

Step 4: Check the Windows Update service
Press
Windows+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Its status should be Running. If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start. If it is already running, right-click it and choose Restart, then close Services and retry the operation.If Windows will not start the service or displays another service error, record that message. Do not repeatedly alter permissions or disable other services; move to the file-integrity check and, if necessary, Microsoft or Xbox support.

Step 5: Check Windows system files with SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt: select Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt, enter:Recommended: PC Feels Slow? It may take time and should not be interrupted. When it finishes, follow the result it displays, restart Windows, and retry the Xbox or Store action. Microsoft lists System File Checker as a remedy for this error code.
If SFC reports that it could not complete, or the same error remains after a reported repair, keep the exact result available for support rather than running the command repeatedly without a new diagnostic reason.

Step 6: Repair the Xbox app
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Find the Xbox app, open its menu, and select Advanced options. Choose Repair, wait for Windows to finish, then open Xbox and retry.
Repair is the less disruptive option because it attempts to correct the app without starting with a full reset. Exact labels can differ by Windows release.

Step 7: Reset the Xbox app if Repair did not help
Return to the Xbox app’s Advanced options page and select Reset. Confirm the prompt, launch the app again, sign in if requested, and retry the affected operation. Use Reset only after Repair; it reinitializes the app’s local data, so you may need to repeat app-specific settings or sign-in steps.

Step 8: Repair or reset Microsoft Store
Use the same installed-apps route to find Microsoft Store: open its menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair. Retry the Xbox or game installation. If that does not work, return to the page and select Reset, confirm, reopen Microsoft Store, and try again.
Repair the Store before resetting it. Do not reset both applications at once; changing one component at a time makes it clear which action affected the result.

Step 9: Reinstall Gaming Services only as a fallback
This sequence is community-reported, not a guaranteed or universally current Microsoft fix. Use it only after the preceding Windows, app and Store steps have failed, and only if you are comfortable using an administrator PowerShell window. It removes a Windows gaming component, so do not treat it as routine cache clearing.

Windows+R, enter the following Store URI exactly, and press Enter:ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHNMicrosoft Store should open to Gaming Services. Select the install button, let the installation finish, restart Windows, and retry the Xbox or game operation.
If PowerShell reports an error, the Store page will not open, Gaming Services will not install, or the code persists, stop changing services and permissions. Use Microsoft or Xbox support and provide the platform, title, trigger, scope, exact message and the steps already attempted.

When the code appears on an Xbox console
The Windows procedure above is for a Windows PC. If 0x80070057 appears on an Xbox console while installing or updating a game or app, do not run sfc, services.msc or the PowerShell removal command; those are Windows-PC tools. Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance directs console game and app installation problems to Xbox Support.
Before contacting support, note the console generation, the game or app name, whether the failure occurs during download, installation, update or launch, and whether other games or apps work. Those details let support choose a console-specific sequence instead of applying an unrelated Windows fix.
