Xbox error 0x80070057 usually means Windows received an incorrect parameter. Microsoft associates the code with corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect system configuration. In the Xbox app, the failing component may instead be Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, account validation, or an AppX package. Work through the Windows fixes below in order, starting with the surface and action that produced the error.
What Xbox error 0x80070057 means
The spelling in the question is commonly written as “ox80070057,” but the hexadecimal error code uses a zero: 0x80070057. Microsoft’s Windows error table defines it as “The parameter is incorrect.” That description identifies the type of failure, not one single Xbox problem.

Windows components pass parameters to one another when they launch an app, validate an account, install a package, apply an update, or access a service. If a parameter is invalid, missing, malformed, or rejected because a file or permission is wrong, several unrelated components can return the same numeric code. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance links 0x80070057 with corrupted files, permission issues, and incorrect system configurations.

First identify where the code appears
Before changing anything, note the exact screen and action. The same code needs a different first fix depending on whether it appears in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Windows Update, or on a physical Xbox console.

Also record your Windows edition and version, Xbox app version if visible, Microsoft account used, and whether the failure happens every time or only with one game. This information prevents you from treating an AppX installation failure as a hardware problem.
Fix 0x80070057 in the Xbox app on Windows
1. Restart Windows and finish pending updates
Save work, restart the computer, and try the same Xbox action once. A restart clears a process that may still be holding an app or Gaming Services file. Then open Settings > Windows Update and install updates offered for your Windows version. Restart again if Windows requests it.

Incomplete updates and configuration changes are common contributors to 0x80070057-related failures. Do not begin an app reset while Windows is still waiting for a restart.

2. Repair the Xbox app first
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows builds this page may be labelled Apps & features.
- Find Xbox, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and open the Xbox app again.
Repair attempts to correct the app without clearing its local data, so it is the lower-risk choice. If the button is unavailable, make sure you selected the Xbox app rather than a game with a similar name.
3. Reset the Xbox app if repair fails
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options.
- Select Reset and confirm the warning.
- Restart Windows, open Xbox, and sign in again if prompted.
Reset removes the app’s local state. It can clear a damaged configuration, but it may also remove saved preferences or require you to authenticate again. It does not by itself establish that a game installation or a console is defective.
4. Check Microsoft Store and Gaming Services
The Xbox app relies on Microsoft Store components and Gaming Services for account, licensing, and game installation work. Open Microsoft Store and check for updates to the Store itself, Xbox, and Gaming Services. If an update is pending, let it complete and restart Windows.
If the Xbox app still returns 0x80070057, reinstall the Xbox app and Gaming Services using the Store’s installed-app controls or the uninstall and reinstall options shown for your Windows build. Restart after both components are installed. Reinstallation is a larger change than Repair because it can remove local app state and require a fresh sign-in.

If Gaming Services is missing, damaged, or stuck in a pending state, the Xbox app may fail even when the app package itself is intact. Treat this as a Store/service deployment issue rather than repeatedly resetting the Xbox app.
5. Verify date, time, and time zone
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone options where available.
- Use Sync now if Windows provides it, then close and reopen Xbox.
Incorrect clock or time-zone information can interfere with Store and account validation. This check is quick and does not remove app data.
6. Run the applicable Windows troubleshooter
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Windows Update if the code appears during an update or installation that depends on Windows Update. Windows versions expose troubleshooters under slightly different labels, so use the Troubleshoot search box if the path differs.
A troubleshooter can correct a detected service or configuration problem, but a result stating that no issue was found does not rule out damaged Xbox or Store files. Continue with the file checks below when the error remains.

7. Check protected Windows files with SFC
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
sfc /scannow. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window or restart during the scan.
- Restart Windows and repeat the Xbox action.
System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows files and repairs corruption it can resolve. Microsoft specifically recommends SFC for 0x80070057-associated update failures. If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, record that result and proceed to DISM rather than running repeated scans without a restart.
8. Use DISM for broader component corruption
For a Windows upgrade, update, or broader component-store problem, Microsoft also recommends the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM). In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAllow the operation to finish; it can remain at one percentage for an extended period. Restart when it completes, then run sfc /scannow again so SFC can use the repaired component store. If the Xbox error is confined to one app and Windows Update works normally, DISM is a wider intervention than an app Repair or Reset.

AppX package context
If 0x80070057 appears while Microsoft Store is deploying Xbox or a game, the relevant technical label is E_INVALIDARG. Microsoft Learn describes this as one or more invalid arguments and notes that invalid package-manifest values can cause deployment failure.

For a normal consumer installation, do not edit an AppX manifest or replace package files manually. Instead, note the exact package, uninstall and reinstall the affected app through Windows or Microsoft Store, and make sure Store and Gaming Services are current. Package-level investigation is most useful for administrators or developers who have deployment logs and a specific manifest value to inspect.
Check account, permissions, and configuration
- Confirm that the Xbox and Microsoft Store apps are signed in with the account that owns the game or subscription.
- Check whether the failure affects one game or every Xbox installation. A single package points more strongly to that package’s deployment state.
- If the error occurs only under one Windows account, test the same action in the account that normally owns the installation; do not change permissions randomly.
- Keep the installation drive connected and available, and allow Windows to complete any restart required by an update.
These checks address the permission and configuration categories Microsoft associates with the code without modifying system folders or package manifests.
If 0x80070057 appears on a physical Xbox console
The Windows troubleshooting sequence above applies to the Xbox app on a laptop or desktop. A message on a physical console is a different support path. Record the console model, the exact action, whether the code appears during a system update or a game installation, and any accompanying message. The numeric code by itself does not establish a hardware defect, so avoid replacing hardware based only on 0x80070057.

Escalate after the restart, updates, Xbox Repair/Reset, Store and Gaming Services checks, date/time verification, troubleshooter, SFC, and appropriate DISM step have failed. Provide support with:
- “0x80070057” exactly, including the leading zero;
- the surface: Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Windows Update, or console;
- the action: launch, sign-in, update, or installation;
- Windows edition and version;
- Xbox, Store, and Gaming Services versions when visible;
- whether the problem affects one game, all games, or only one Windows account;
- the final messages from SFC or DISM and whether a restart changed the result.
This context matters because 0x80070057 is a shared Windows error value, not a unique Xbox diagnosis. Microsoft Support’s Windows guidance, Microsoft Learn’s AppX documentation, and the 2025 Microsoft Community Xbox-app case describe overlapping but different failure paths; the surface and trigger determine which path is relevant.
