0x80070057 is not a single Xbox One hardware diagnosis. Microsoft uses the code for an update that failed to install in Windows Update and for invalid parameters during an installation or update in Edge. The correct fix depends on the device, the app or service showing the message, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, updating, or launch.
Start with one restart, confirm the device is online, check available storage, and retry once. Then follow the device-specific procedure below. Do not remove Windows Gaming Services for an error that appears only on an Xbox One console.

What error 0x80070057 means
The hexadecimal code 0x80070057 is a parameter or installation/update error whose meaning changes with the Microsoft component reporting it. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance labels it “Update failed to install” and lists corrupted files, permission problems, and incorrect system configuration among possible causes. Microsoft’s Edge guidance describes it as “Invalid parameters during installation or update.” Those descriptions do not establish one universal Xbox One cause.

Identify the exact failure before changing anything
The same code can appear in several places. Match the message to the row that describes your situation before choosing a fix.
| Device | Surface showing the message | What the code usually indicates in that context | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One console | Game or console update, download, installation, or launch | A failed content operation; the code alone does not prove a hardware fault. | Restart, network check, storage check, then retry the affected operation. |
| Windows PC | Xbox app or Microsoft Store game installation | A Windows Store, Gaming Services, or other Windows-component problem is more likely than a defective Xbox console. | Restart, check storage, then use the Windows and Gaming Services steps below. |
| Windows PC | Windows Update | An update failed to install; corruption, permissions, or configuration can be involved. | Windows Update troubleshooter, System File Checker, and the update-cache reset. |
| Windows PC | Microsoft Edge installation or update | Invalid parameters during that installation or update. | Restart, verify network and storage, and keep the repair scoped to Edge rather than Gaming Services. |
Also note the failure stage. A download that never starts points you toward connectivity or account/service availability; an installation that reaches a percentage and stops points more toward storage, package, permission, or component corruption; an update that fails after downloading points toward the update service or cached files; a game that installs but will not launch may have a separate launch problem. The scope matters too: one game suggests a damaged game package or title-specific issue, while every game suggests a Store, Gaming Services, account, or Windows problem.
First checks for every device
- Restart once. Restart the Xbox One or Windows PC from its normal power menu. A restart clears a temporary installer state and ensures pending service changes are loaded.
- Confirm the connection. Make sure the console or PC is connected to the internet and that other online services work. If the connection is intermittent, wait until it is stable before starting another large download.
- Check free storage. The destination drive must have enough space for the game, update, and temporary installation data. Remove or move content only when you know which drive is being used.
- Retry the same operation once. Record whether the second attempt fails at download, installation, update, or launch. That detail determines the next branch.
- Do not change hardware yet. The available Microsoft guidance identifies software, configuration, and support remedies; it does not establish that a new drive, cable, controller, or repair kit is required for this code.
Fixing 0x80070057 on an Xbox One console
1. Restart and retry the affected game operation
Use the console’s normal restart command, wait for the dashboard to load completely, and retry the same download, installation, or update. If only one title fails, leave other installed games alone while you test that title again. A single-title failure does not by itself indicate that the console’s storage hardware is defective.

2. Verify network status and storage
Open the Xbox network settings and confirm that the console reports an active connection. Then inspect the console’s storage settings and verify that the installation drive has sufficient free space. If an external drive is involved, confirm that the console still lists it before retrying; do not assume that replacing the drive is the answer simply because the code appeared.

3. Reinstall only the affected game when appropriate
If the same game repeatedly fails while other downloads and updates work, cancel the stuck operation and reinstall that title. This is a targeted step, not a general reset. Before removing the local installation, make sure your saved progress is synchronized or otherwise protected according to your normal setup. Reinstalling is most useful when the problem is limited to one game package; it is less informative when every title fails.
4. Escalate a persistent console fault through Xbox Support
If the code returns after a restart, a confirmed connection, adequate storage, and a targeted reinstall, use Xbox Support’s online repair process. Microsoft’s Xbox One warranty manual directs unresolved problems to that online repair flow. Provide the exact screen text, the title involved, whether the failure was a download, install, update, or launch, and whether other games work. Those details help support distinguish a title package issue from a console-level service or storage problem.
Fixing 0x80070057 in the Windows Xbox app or Microsoft Store
1. Confirm that the PC, not the console, is failing
If the message appears in the Windows Xbox app or Microsoft Store while installing a game, treat it as a Windows Store or Gaming Services problem. The presence of Xbox branding does not make this an Xbox One hardware issue. Restart Windows, verify the destination drive has room, and retry once before changing system components.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Open Settings, go to System, choose Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters, and run Windows Update. On older Windows layouts, the same tool is under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Apply any correction it reports, restart the PC if requested, and retry the Store or Xbox installation.

The troubleshooter is relevant because Microsoft associates this code with failed updates, corrupted files, permissions, and incorrect configuration. It does not guarantee that a Store game installation will be repaired; it checks Windows Update-related conditions first.
3. Check protected Windows files with System File Checker
Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin). Run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. If it reports that it repaired files, restart Windows and retry the failed operation. If it reports no integrity violations, continue with the component-specific steps rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
4. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Use this branch when the code appears during Windows Update or when update components are clearly involved. Open an administrator command window and run the commands in order:

net stop wuauserv

ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
net start bits
net start wuauserv
The first two commands stop Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder forces Windows to create a fresh update cache; the final commands start the services again. If a stop command says the service is not running, continue to the next command. If the rename fails because files are in use, restart Windows and repeat the sequence before trying the update again.
5. Reinstall Gaming Services for a Microsoft Store game-install failure
This is a Windows-PC procedure for a Microsoft Store or Xbox app installation failure. It is not a documented Xbox One console repair step. Use an administrator PowerShell window:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
After the command completes, open the Gaming Services product page with:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
Install Gaming Services from the Store page, restart Windows, and retry the game installation. The command removes the Gaming Services package for all users on that PC, so check that you opened PowerShell with administrator rights and that you are comfortable applying a machine-wide change. Microsoft Q&A hosts this procedure as community guidance; it should be treated as a targeted remedy, not a guaranteed fix for every 0x80070057 case.

6. Test the scope after each change
Retry the original title first. If it succeeds, test one additional Store or Xbox installation to determine whether the issue was title-specific or system-wide. If every title still fails, capture the exact app name, Windows version, installation drive, and failure stage before seeking Microsoft support. Avoid repeating the Gaming Services removal command indefinitely; once the package has been reinstalled, further repetitions are unlikely to add useful information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the message appears during Windows Update
Keep the fix focused on Windows Update rather than the Xbox app. Restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, run sfc /scannow, and reset the update cache only if the earlier steps do not clear the failure. Retry the same update and note whether the error occurs immediately or after downloading. An update that still fails after those checks may require Microsoft support because the code does not identify which file, permission, or configuration entry is at fault.
When the message appears in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft describes 0x80070057 in Edge as invalid parameters during installation or update. Restart the PC, confirm network access and free storage, and rerun the Edge installation or update from the same supported package you were using. Do not apply the Gaming Services PowerShell removal command to an Edge-only error; Gaming Services belongs to the Windows gaming-install path. If the Edge installer continues to fail, use Microsoft’s Edge-specific troubleshooting and installation support for the exact installer version and Windows edition involved.

Common mistakes that make the problem harder to diagnose
- Treating every occurrence as an Xbox One fault. The Windows Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Windows Update, and Edge can all report the same hexadecimal value.
- Using the Gaming Services command on the console. The PowerShell procedure applies to Windows PCs, not to Xbox One system software.
- Deleting multiple games immediately. First determine whether one title or every title fails; broad removal destroys useful diagnostic information and creates unnecessary downloads.
- Ignoring storage headroom. A drive can show enough room for the final game size yet lack space for temporary installation data.
- Repeating a failed retry without recording the stage. Note whether the operation stops during download, install, update, or launch, because each stage points to a different component.
- Buying hardware before a software diagnosis. The code alone does not establish that a storage drive, network cable, controller, or other physical item will resolve the problem.
What to record before contacting support
- The exact code as displayed, including whether it is
0x80070057or another value. - Whether the message appeared on an Xbox One console or a Windows PC.
- The surface: system update, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, Gaming Services, Edge, or a particular game.
- The failure stage: download, installation, update, or launch.
- Whether one game fails or every installation fails.
- Available storage on the destination drive and whether the device is online.
- Which steps you already completed, including the troubleshooter, SFC scan, cache reset, or Gaming Services reinstall.
This information prevents support from sending you through an unrelated branch and makes it clearer whether the next action belongs on the console, in Windows, in the Store, or in the affected application.
