Error 0x80080005 is not one universal Xbox failure. On a Windows PC, Microsoft groups it with corrupted files, permission problems and incorrect system configurations. On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, the same code can appear during an install, update or launch, but Microsoft does not publish one definitive console meaning. Identify the platform first, check service status, then follow the matching repair path below.
The code is often mistyped as 0X8008005; record the complete eight-digit value, 0x80080005, before troubleshooting.

What error 0x80080005 means
Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting table lists 0x80070057 and 0x80080005 together as errors associated with “corrupted files, permission issues or incorrect system configurations.” That is the clearest official definition, but it is a Windows-oriented description, not proof that every Xbox-console occurrence has the same cause.

The code can be displayed by the Xbox app, Microsoft Store or Windows components when a game or app is installed, updated or launched. On a console, it may appear during a game installation, an update, sign-in or launch. A service outage can produce symptoms that look like a local fault, so changing local settings before checking Xbox service status can waste time.

Do not treat the number alone as evidence of a failing hard drive, a particular network port, a permanently banned account or malware. No authoritative guidance establishes those conclusions for this code.
Identify the platform and trigger first
The correct steps depend on where the message appears. Use this quick distinction before you reset anything or remove game data.

If the message appears in both places, troubleshoot the device that actually displays it first. Write down the game or app name, the operation that failed, the time it happened and the complete code. Those details help support distinguish a service incident from a local configuration problem.

1. Check Xbox service status
- Open Microsoft’s Xbox Status page in a browser.
- Look specifically for incidents affecting Account & Profile, Games & Gaming or Store services.
- If one of those areas is degraded or under maintenance, wait for the incident to clear and retry the same operation. Keep the complete error code and the affected title for reference.
A service-side problem can prevent a valid installation or sign-in even when Windows files are healthy. Repeating repairs while a service is unavailable will not correct the outage.
2. Install pending Windows updates and restart
- Open Settings.
- Choose Windows Update (on current Windows 11 builds this is under Settings > Windows Update; on Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates and install all offered updates.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately demand a restart.
An update can replace damaged Windows components or correct a configuration mismatch. After the restart, open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store and repeat the exact install, update or launch action once.
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to complete. Apply any repair it offers, then restart if requested.
This is Microsoft’s documented path for the Windows error family that includes 0x80080005. If the labels differ on an older Windows edition, use the Settings search box for “troubleshoot Windows Update” rather than downloading an unverified fixer.

- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter the following command exactly, including the space:
sfc /scannow- Press Enter and let the scan reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Read the final message. It will report whether Windows found and repaired integrity violations or could not repair some files.
- Restart Windows, then retry the Xbox app or Store operation.
System File Checker is specifically recommended by Microsoft for this error family. If it reports files that could not be repaired, record that result and include it when contacting Microsoft support; do not repeatedly delete system folders or edit the registry based only on the code.

5. Retry from the same app and record the result
After the update, restart, troubleshooter and SFC scan, repeat the failed action once. Note whether the error occurs during download, licensing, installation, updating or launch. If another code appears, record the new code rather than assuming it is identical to 0x80080005.
Do not remove the game’s installation folder as a first response. Deleting files can create a second problem and does not address a service outage or Windows permission issue. Use Microsoft’s app or support contact route if the error remains after the documented steps.
Fix 0x80080005 on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
Console troubleshooting is separate from the Windows procedure. The available Microsoft material does not define one guaranteed console cause, so begin with service availability and low-risk recovery.

1. Check Xbox Status and capture the full message
- Open the official Xbox Status page on the console or another device.
- Look for incidents involving sign-in, account services, gaming services or the Store.
- Write down the full
0x80080005value, the game or app, and whether the failure occurred during installation, an update, launch or sign-in.
If a relevant incident is active, wait for service restoration before changing console settings. A local reset cannot repair a platform outage.

2. Fully restart the console
- Save any open game or app.
- Use the console’s power menu to choose a complete restart, not merely a return to the Home screen.
- Wait for the Home screen to load, reconnect to the network if prompted, and retry the same operation.
A restart clears a temporary process or authentication state without removing installed games or your account.
3. Install pending console updates
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Updates.
- Install any available system update and allow the console to restart.
- Open the affected game or app and try again.
Keep the console powered and connected while an update is installing. Interrupting an update can leave the system in a different failure state.
4. Retry the affected game or app
After the service check, restart and update, repeat only the operation that failed. If another title works but one title continues to fail, tell support the exact title and operation; that distinction is more useful than a general statement that “Xbox is broken.”
5. Treat network and cache suggestions as secondary guidance
Community and video guides for this code sometimes suggest running a network test or clearing temporary console cache data. Those suggestions are not an official Microsoft diagnosis for 0x80080005, and menu names can vary by console software version. Use only procedures described in current Xbox support instructions, and avoid deleting saved games or choosing a factory reset merely because a video recommends it.

A network check is reasonable when the failure is clearly limited to sign-in or downloading, but a successful network test does not prove that files and permissions are healthy. Likewise, clearing temporary data may help a transient state but cannot be treated as a guaranteed fix.

Escalate to Xbox or Microsoft Support when the relevant service is operational, the device is updated, the restart is complete and the error still returns. Provide:
- The exact eight-digit code, including the leading zero.
- Platform and model: Windows 10 or 11 PC, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- The game or app name and the failed action.
- When the problem began and whether it affects other titles.
- Any Windows Update troubleshooter result or SFC final message.
- Whether the Xbox Status page showed an incident at the time.
Support can direct you to a platform-specific recovery flow. Do not factory-reset a console, reinstall Windows, alter registry permissions or delete game data unless an official support process tells you to and you have confirmed that needed saves and account data are synchronized.
