How to Fix Xbox Install Error 0x80070032 on Windows

Error 0x80070032 is associated with the Xbox app for Windows when it verifies or repairs a game. The safest response is to restart after updates, confirm the account and Store conditions, update Windows and the Xbox/Microsoft Store apps, then use Repair or Reset before considering an uninstall. Do not treat this code as proof that an Xbox console has the same fault, and do not casually cancel a repair.

What Xbox error 0x80070032 means

The spelling in the title is commonly mistyped as “ox80070032.” The documented code is 0x80070032, with a zero after the x. Xbox Insider Release Notes for Xbox App for Windows version 2202.1001.7.0, published February 24, 2022, state: “Fixed an issue where verifying and repairing a game results in error 0x80070032, and cancelling the repair uninstalls the game.” That release note ties the code to the Windows Xbox app’s verification and repair flow.

This evidence describes a Windows-app condition, not a universal explanation for every failed Xbox installation. A console may show a different message, and a Windows installation can fail for account, Store, compatibility, service or update reasons without using this code. Microsoft has not published an authoritative frequency, success-rate or average-time statistic for 0x80070032, so treat the workflow below as a sequence of supported checks rather than a guaranteed one-click cure.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Exact code: confirm that it is 0x80070032, not a similar-looking code such as 0x80073D26.
  • Platform: note whether the operation is in the Xbox app for Windows, Microsoft Store, or on an Xbox console.
  • Stage: record whether the message appears while starting an install, verifying files, repairing an existing game, or cancelling a repair.
  • Game and entitlement: record the game title and whether access comes from a purchase, PC Game Pass or another subscription.
  • Storage location: note the drive and folder selected for the game, especially if it is an external or secondary drive.
  • Recent changes: record a Windows update, Xbox app update, Store update, moved game folder or changed Microsoft account.

Do not use a different error number as a synonym. Microsoft documents 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F in a separate Gaming Services installation or startup scenario for Xbox Game Pass on Windows. If either of those codes is shown, follow the Gaming Services-specific path instead of relabelling it 0x80070032.

Manual fixes in the least-risk order

1. Restart Windows after updates

A pending restart can leave Store components in an intermediate state. Microsoft specifically notes that a PC recently updated may need a restart before Store apps can be installed.

  1. Save work and close the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and any game launcher.
  2. Open Start > Power > Restart; choose Restart rather than Shut down and immediately powering on.
  3. After signing in, wait for Windows to finish any “working on updates” process, then try the same operation once.

If the code returns, continue rather than repeatedly cancelling a repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the Microsoft account and game availability

The Xbox app must be using the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the subscription that grants access. A Windows account can be different from the Xbox account, and a sign-in prompt may have been dismissed after an update.

  1. Open the Xbox app and inspect the profile menu. Sign out and sign back in with the account that purchased the game or holds the relevant subscription.
  2. Open Microsoft Store and confirm that it uses the same account. If the Store lists the game as unavailable, install, or buy rather than owned, resolve that account mismatch before removing the existing app.
  3. Check whether the PC meets the game’s stated device requirements and whether the title is available in your country or region.
  4. Verify that the game has not been removed from the Microsoft Store or from the subscription catalogue. Availability can differ by region and can change independently of the installed files.

These checks matter before an uninstall: repairing an app does not create an entitlement, and reinstalling cannot restore access to a title that the signed-in account no longer owns or cannot obtain in its region.

3. Install all pending Windows updates

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Install available updates, including servicing or Store-related updates offered for your edition.
  3. Restart when Windows requests it, even if the Xbox app itself appears to be working.

Try the install or verification again only after the restart has completed. If the failure began immediately after an update, the restart is especially important because Store apps can be unable to register their updated components until the reboot.

4. Update Microsoft Store and the Xbox app

Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting sequence starts by closing and reopening the app and checking for updates. The Store distributes the Xbox app for Windows, so update both rather than updating only the launcher.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Close Microsoft Store, reopen it from Start, and sign in if prompted.
  2. Select Library (called Downloads or Downloads and updates in some Windows 10 builds), then choose Get updates or the equivalent update control.
  3. Allow Microsoft Store and Xbox updates to finish. Do not start a game installation while the Xbox app is itself updating.
  4. Open the Xbox app again and check its available updates or version information. If the app is offered through the Store Library, install that update there.
  5. Restart Windows once more if either app updated core components.

Retry the same game and the same operation you recorded in step one. Changing several games at once makes it harder to tell whether the original problem is resolved.

5. Repair the Xbox app without deleting its data

Windows provides an app-level Repair action that is designed to correct damaged registration or files while preserving the app’s data. The labels vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
  2. Find Xbox, open its menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair and wait for Windows to complete the operation. Do not close Settings during the repair.
  4. Open Xbox, sign in again if requested, and retry the install or verification.

If Repair changes nothing, the same page may offer Reset. Reset can remove the Xbox app’s local data and sign-in state, so use it only after confirming that the game entitlement is available and that you can sign in again. Resetting the launcher is different from deleting the game’s installed files, but the app may need to rediscover the library afterward.

6. Repair the Microsoft Store app

Because Store services deliver and register many Xbox components, repair the Store app as a separate step.

  1. Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on Windows 10).
  2. Select Microsoft Store, open Advanced options, and choose Repair.
  3. Reopen Microsoft Store, use Library > Get updates, and let pending updates finish.
  4. Launch Xbox and test the game again.

Use Reset for Microsoft Store only if Repair fails. A reset can clear Store sign-in and local settings; be prepared to authenticate again. If the Store app itself remains broken, uninstalling and reinstalling the affected app may be necessary, but do not remove the Xbox app or game until you have confirmed the account, availability and storage information recorded earlier.

7. Handle a verification or repair request carefully

Verification checks an existing installation; repair may replace or re-register damaged components. The 2022 Xbox release note specifically warned that cancelling the historical repair operation could uninstall the game. Therefore:

  1. Close other launchers that may be using the same files and make sure the PC will not sleep during the operation.
  2. Start Verify or Repair from the Xbox app and allow it to finish. Progress can pause while files are checked.
  3. Do not press Cancel merely because the progress indicator appears unchanged.
  4. If the process has genuinely failed and the app offers a new retry, capture the code and any additional text before closing it.

If the game disappears after a cancelled repair, check the Xbox library while signed in to the owning account. The entitlement can still be present even when local files have been removed; reinstall only after confirming that the title is available and that the selected drive has enough space.

8. Use Microsoft’s game-install and Store troubleshooters

Microsoft directs users with game-installation problems to Windows game-install troubleshooting and the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter. These tools check common registration and Store conditions without requiring a physical accessory.

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Store Apps, and select Run.
  2. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Store Apps, and run it.
  3. Apply only the changes the troubleshooter reports. Restart if requested.
  4. Use Microsoft’s game-install troubleshooting guidance for any additional diagnostic branch shown for your Windows edition, then retry from the Xbox app.

Menus can move between Windows releases. If the exact label is absent, search Settings for “troubleshoot” and select the Windows Store Apps entry rather than downloading an unrelated utility.

9. Separate Gaming Services errors from 0x80070032

Gaming Services is a dependency for Xbox Game Pass installations on Windows, but its documented errors are not interchangeable with 0x80070032. Microsoft’s Gaming Services article addresses 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F when Gaming Services is installed or started.

If one of those numbers appears, stop the 0x80070032 workflow, record the new code and follow Microsoft’s Gaming Services instructions. If the screen still says 0x80070032 during Verify or Repair, return to the Xbox-app steps above. Installing random service packages, deleting folders or changing registry entries is not an evidence-backed fix for this code and can make recovery harder.

10. Reinstall only after the non-destructive steps

Reinstallation is a last resort because it can remove local app data and, depending on the action chosen, game files. Before selecting Uninstall:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the owning Microsoft account and subscription status.
  • Confirm that the game remains available in your country or region.
  • Record the installation drive and any custom library location.
  • Check that you have enough free space and a stable connection for a complete download.
  • Understand whether you are uninstalling only the Xbox launcher, the Microsoft Store app, or the game itself.

Uninstall and reinstall the affected app first if Windows identifies the launcher as damaged. Remove the game only when its entitlement is confirmed and you accept that the download may need to start over. After reinstalling, update Windows and the Store components before testing the game.

Common situations and the right branch

The error appears while installing a new game

Start with the account, region, device-compatibility and Store-availability checks, then restart after updates and update the Store and Xbox app. Repair the launcher only after those checks. A verification-specific release note does not prove that every new-install failure has the same underlying bug.

The error appears when verifying or repairing an existing game

Allow the operation to complete rather than cancelling it. Repair the Xbox app, update the software stack and run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter. If cancellation removed the local installation, verify the entitlement and library location before starting a fresh download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The message is on an Xbox console

Do not assume the Windows Xbox-app explanation applies. Record the console model, game, exact on-screen code and whether the failure occurs during installation, update or repair, then use Xbox Support’s console-specific path. The documented 0x80070032 note is for Xbox App for Windows version 2202.1001.7.0.

A different code appears after an update

Stop and record the new number. In particular, 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F belong to Microsoft’s separate Gaming Services guidance. Repeating Xbox-app resets under the wrong code can waste time and may erase local settings without addressing the service problem.

What is not an evidence-backed fix

  • Physical accessories: the documented condition is a Windows software and service workflow; a controller, cable or generic PC accessory is not an established remedy.
  • Blind file deletion: deleting Xbox, Store or Gaming Services folders can remove data without repairing registration. Use the supported Repair, Reset and troubleshooting paths first.
  • Repeated cancellation: the historical release note explicitly connected cancelling a repair with uninstalling the game.
  • Assuming ownership: an installed folder does not by itself prove that the signed-in account still has access to the title.
  • Mixing codes: 0x80070032, 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F describe different documented contexts.

When to contact Microsoft or Xbox Support

Escalate after the restart, account check, updates, app Repair or Reset and the applicable troubleshooter have failed. Include evidence that lets support reproduce the exact path:

  • the complete code, including the leading zero;
  • whether the failure is in Xbox for Windows, Microsoft Store or a console;
  • the Windows edition and version, or console model;
  • the game title and purchase or subscription type;
  • the drive and library location;
  • whether the action was Install, Verify, Repair or Cancel;
  • the date the issue began and any Windows, Store or Xbox update immediately beforehand;
  • screenshots or the full text of any second error, especially a Gaming Services code.

This information distinguishes a historical Xbox-app verification bug from an entitlement, availability, Store, Windows or Gaming Services failure and avoids repeating steps that already changed your installation.
