Error 0x80070422 usually means the Xbox app cannot access a required Windows or Xbox service or component. Work through the repairs in this order: sign in and restart, update Windows, update Microsoft Store, repair or reset Microsoft Store, Xbox and Gaming Services, reinstall the affected app, verify compatibility and account authorization, then run the official Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool. Only if those steps fail should you consider Microsoft’s elevated PowerShell workaround, because it removes Gaming Services packages and service registry entries.

What Xbox error 0x80070422 means

The code appears during Xbox app updates or installations when a required service or software component is unavailable. Microsoft’s public error page does not expose a more specific plain-language definition, so it would be misleading to say that the code always identifies one particular stopped service. In practice, the unavailable dependency can involve Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Gaming Services.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That is why the Xbox app may tell you to turn on Windows Update even when you are trying to install a game. The installer depends on Windows components and Store-delivered packages. If Windows is out of date, a Store package is damaged, Gaming Services is missing, or the account and device are not authorized for the app, the same installer failure can appear.

Before changing anything

  • Use the right Microsoft account. Sign in to Windows, Microsoft Store and Xbox with the account that owns the game or subscription. A different account can prevent authorization even when the installation files are healthy.
  • Save open work. Several repairs require a restart, and the advanced workaround requires an elevated PowerShell session.
  • Check whether Windows was just updated. Microsoft notes that a restart may be required before Store installation works again. Restart before retrying if an update completed recently.
  • Do not start with registry deletion. The ordinary repair and reset controls are easier to reverse and affect a narrower scope than the advanced Gaming Services workaround.

Repair 0x80070422 in Microsoft’s supported order

1. Sign in, then restart Windows

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox app, game or Game Pass entitlement.
  2. Close Xbox and Microsoft Store.
  3. Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart.
  4. After Windows returns, open Xbox and try the installation again.

A restart is particularly important after Windows has installed updates. It allows pending servicing work and registrations to finish before the Store or Xbox app requests another package.

2. Install every available Windows update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Windows Update (on some Windows versions this is under Update & Security).
  3. Select Check for updates and install the updates offered for your PC.
  4. Restart when Windows asks, even if the update screen does not make a restart appear mandatory.
  5. Open Xbox again and test the installation.

Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting starts with making sure Windows is current. Do not treat an old, historical update as a universal answer: current Windows Update should be your first source for the updates applicable to your edition and device.

3. Update Microsoft Store

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Select Get updates.
  4. Allow Store updates to finish, then close and reopen the Store.
  5. Retry the Xbox installation.

The Xbox app and Gaming Services are delivered and maintained through Windows and Store components. Updating the Store before resetting apps gives you the current package versions that Microsoft’s repair guidance expects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Repair the affected apps before resetting them

Windows provides a repair action that attempts to correct an app without immediately removing its data. Apply it to each component involved in the failed installation: Microsoft Store, Xbox and Gaming Services.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Apps, then Installed apps (the label can vary by Windows release).
  3. Find Microsoft Store, open its additional options menu, and choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and test the Store.
  5. Repeat the same process for Xbox and Gaming Services.

If an app has no useful repair result, return to its Advanced options and choose Reset. Reset is a stronger operation and can remove the app’s local data and sign-in state, so be prepared to sign in again. Reset Microsoft Store, Xbox and Gaming Services one at a time and test after each reset; that identifies which component changes the result.

5. Reinstall the affected app

Microsoft’s Store guidance includes reinstalling the affected app when repair and reset do not resolve the installation. In Microsoft Store, open Library, locate the app, and select the install or reinstall control shown for your account and device. If Xbox itself is the component failing, uninstalling and reinstalling Xbox can replace a damaged app package, but do not remove unrelated Windows services or registry entries as a substitute for this step.

If the Xbox app displays a Gaming Services installation prompt after it is reinstalled, use the prompt’s install action. If the prompt loops or the same code returns, continue to the dedicated Gaming Services repair step below.

6. Verify compatibility, availability and authorization

An installation can be blocked even when Windows and Store are working. Microsoft identifies three independent checks:

  • Authorization: the PC or Microsoft account may not be authorized for Store apps or for the entitlement you are using.

Open the item’s Microsoft Store page while signed in with the owning account. Confirm that the page offers an install option for this PC, rather than reporting that the app is unavailable or incompatible. If the Store is showing a different account avatar, sign out and back in with the account that owns the app or game, then revisit the page.

7. Run the official Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool

Xbox provides an official PC Gaming Services Repair Tool for cases in which Gaming Services is missing, damaged or cannot be installed normally. Use the current instructions on Xbox’s support page because the page is updated independently of the Xbox app and its interface can change. Follow only the actions presented by that official tool; do not substitute commands copied from an unrelated forum.

After the tool finishes, restart Windows if it requests one, open Xbox, and try the installation again. If the tool reports that it cannot complete the repair, record the message before moving to the advanced procedure. The tool is intended to repair Gaming Services; it is not a guarantee that every 0x80070422 cause has been removed.

Advanced Microsoft workaround: remove and reinstall Gaming Services

Microsoft documents a PowerShell workaround in KB5004327 for a related Gaming Services installation failure. It removes the Gaming Services app package for all users and deletes two Gaming Services service registry entries. Because this changes system services and requires administrator rights, use it only after the ordinary sequence and the official repair tool have failed.

  • PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.

What this workaround changes

  • It removes packages matching *gamingservices* for all users.
  • It removes the GamingServices and GamingServicesNet service registry keys.
  • It requires an elevated PowerShell session or a script explicitly run as administrator.
  • It is intended for Gaming Services installation failures, not as a universal repair for every 0x80070422 message.

Run the documented commands carefully

  1. Copy the following commands exactly into a plain-text file, such as repair-gaming-services.ps1:
Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers
Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServices" -recurse
Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServicesNet" -recurse
  1. Save the file, then run it as an administrator. The exact context menu wording can vary by Windows version; the important requirement is that PowerShell is elevated.
  2. Wait for each command to finish. Do not add commands that delete other services, and do not remove similarly named registry keys manually.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Xbox. When Xbox displays the Gaming Services prompt, select Install.
  5. After Gaming Services installs, retry the game or app installation.

If a command reports that a path or package is not present, do not “fix” the script by broadening its target. The documented commands intentionally target only the Gaming Services package and the two named service keys. If PowerShell reports an access or policy error, stop and use the ordinary app repair path or the official Xbox repair tool rather than experimenting with unrelated registry settings.

Which repair path should you choose?

Path Scope Access required Relative risk Reversibility
Windows Update and restart Windows servicing and pending updates Normal Settings access; restart may require sign-in afterward Low Windows manages the update state
Store update Microsoft Store packages Normal Store access Low Low-impact; no manual registry change
Repair One app at a time Normal Settings access Low Easier to undo than a reset
Reset One app’s installation and local data Normal Settings access Moderate Requires signing in or restoring local settings again
Reinstall The selected Store app Store authorization for the account and device Moderate Can be installed again when available
Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool Gaming Services repair Follow the tool’s current instructions Lower than manual registry removal Tool-controlled
Elevated PowerShell workaround Gaming Services package and two service entries Administrator rights Highest in this sequence Less reversible; requires reinstalling Gaming Services

This is a practical comparison of the documented operations, not a Microsoft ranking. Start with the narrowest operation that matches the symptom and move to broader changes only when the result justifies them.

What to do when the error remains

Windows Update will not complete

Stay in Windows Update and resolve the update failure before repeatedly retrying Xbox. A pending or failed update can leave Store components in an incomplete state. Restart after any successful update, then repeat the Store update and app repair sequence.

Microsoft Store cannot update or install anything

If unrelated Store apps also fail, focus on Store repair, reset and account authorization before blaming Xbox. Confirm that the Store Library page is signed in to the expected account and that the item is available for the current PC.

Only Xbox fails, while other Store apps work

Repair and reset Xbox first, then reinstall it from the Store Library. If the Xbox app immediately asks for Gaming Services again, use the official Gaming Services Repair Tool rather than repeating the same Xbox reinstall indefinitely.

Gaming Services keeps requesting installation

Run the official repair tool once and restart if instructed. If the loop persists, the Microsoft-documented PowerShell workaround is the next advanced option. Follow the exact commands, restart, and select Install in Xbox when the Gaming Services prompt returns.

The Store says the app is unavailable or incompatible

This is an eligibility problem, not necessarily a damaged installation. Check the app page while signed in with the owning account and verify that the current Windows device meets the availability shown there. Reinstall attempts cannot override a compatibility or authorization block.

The code appeared after an old Windows 10 Gaming Services failure

KB5004327 covered Windows 10 Gaming Services errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F. Microsoft’s historical resolution was the June 11, 2021 out-of-band update KB5004476 followed by Gaming Services installation. That history does not make KB5004476 a universal current requirement for 0x80070422. Use Windows Update and current Xbox guidance first; consider the old article only when its specific Windows 10 scenario matches yours.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Deleting service keys before repairing the apps: registry removal has a wider impact and needs administrator access.
  • Using a random script: Gaming Services commands must target only the documented package and service entries.
  • Ignoring the account shown in Store: authorization failures can look like installation failures.
  • Skipping the restart: Windows and Store updates may not be fully registered until after reboot.
  • Assuming every 0x80070422 message has the same cause: the code indicates an unavailable dependency, but the exact component can differ.
  • Treating a historical update as a blanket fix: KB5004476 addressed a dated Windows 10 case, not every current Xbox installation problem.
