Xbox One error 0x80070057 is usually encountered during a system update or game/app installation, but the code alone does not identify one universal cause. First verify the characters on screen—the supplied title contains an extra trailing 5—then match the remedy to the action that failed. Restart and basic checks are low-risk; Xbox’s Startup Troubleshooter, an offline USB update, and finally a reset are escalation steps.
Check the code before changing anything
Take a photo of the message or copy it exactly. Microsoft commonly documents the HRESULT as 0x80070057 (zero, x, eight-zero-zero-seven-zero-zero-five-seven). The title form 0X800700057 has one extra trailing digit. An additional code or a different final digit can point to a different support path.

The same HRESULT is used in several Microsoft products. A Windows explanation is not proof of the cause on an Xbox One. Microsoft’s Windows update guidance associates 0x80070057 with “corrupted files, permission issues or incorrect system configurations,” and separately lists it among codes for an update that failed to install. Those descriptions provide context, not an Xbox-specific diagnosis.
Identify what was failing
Write down the trigger before retrying. The correct branch depends more on the failed action than on the number itself.

| Trigger | What to record | Initial direction |
|---|---|---|
| Console system update | Whether the message appears during download, verification, installation or restart; any second code | Use the update and recovery path, including Startup Troubleshooter options if they appear |
| Digital game or app installation | The title, whether other downloads work, and whether the error returns at the same stage | Check connectivity and internal storage, then cancel only the affected installation and start it again from the library |
| Disc installation | Whether digital installs work and whether the error is limited to one disc | Restart once and retry; if only disc installs fail, retain the disc/drive details for Xbox Support |
| Sign-in | Whether the console reaches the home screen and whether other accounts can sign in | Record the full sign-in message and check service availability before attempting recovery |

Try the low-risk fixes first
1. Perform one clean restart
- Power the Xbox One off completely rather than leaving it in standby.
- Wait briefly, then turn it back on.
- Retry the same update or installation once.
A clean restart can clear a transient state without changing games, accounts or settings. Do not repeatedly cancel and restart a partially downloaded system update; repeated interruptions can make the recovery path harder to diagnose.
2. Check the network and Xbox service state
Confirm that the console is connected to the internet and that Xbox services are available. If a service outage is shown, wait for service to return before changing the console. A failed service request can look like an installation problem even when local storage is healthy.
If the console is online but only one download fails, note that distinction. If every update or installation fails, treat the incident as a broader system-update problem rather than a single-game problem.

3. Check internal storage
Make sure the internal drive has room for the game, app or update. The required space can exceed the final installed size while files are downloaded and staged. If storage is nearly full, remove an item you can reinstall later or move content according to the console’s storage controls, then retry once.
Storage space is a useful check, not a diagnosis. A console with ample free space can still show 0x80070057 because the trigger is an update state, a corrupted download or another configuration problem.
4. Retry a single game or app installation
If the code appears only for one digital title, open the installation queue, cancel that affected item, and start it again from the library. Use this only for the affected game or app; do not cancel a console system update merely to make it start over.

After the retry, record whether the same title fails at the same point, whether another title installs, and whether the message changes. Those observations tell Xbox Support whether the problem is isolated or system-wide.

5. Separate disc symptoms from system symptoms
If the error occurs during a disc installation, retry after the clean restart and compare the result with a digital download or another known-good title if one is available. A failure limited to one disc or to the disc drive is a different support case from an error that appears on every update. Keep the exact message, title and console model together if escalation is needed.
Use Xbox recovery documentation for update failures
Xbox Support maintains a system-update error-code and recovery page. The exact 0x80070057 mapping was not exposed in the retrieved support page, so no code-specific result should be promised from that list. Use the page’s current instructions for the console model and the Startup Troubleshooter choices shown on your screen.

When the console can start normally, complete the basic checks above first. When it boots directly to the Startup Troubleshooter, stay on that screen and use the recovery options in the order described below.
Offline system update from the Startup Troubleshooter
The Startup Troubleshooter includes Offline system update. This path is intended for a console that cannot complete the normal online update. It requires a USB flash drive and a separate computer to prepare the drive using Microsoft’s current offline-update instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
- On a computer, open Microsoft’s current Xbox offline system-update instructions and verify the required USB format, capacity and file set. These requirements can change, so do not rely on an old forum package or an undocumented file mirror.
- Prepare the USB drive exactly as the current instructions specify. Copy only the required update files and preserve the folder structure described by Microsoft.
- Safely eject the drive from the computer.
- Connect it to the Xbox One while the Startup Troubleshooter is displayed.
- Select Offline system update and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Leave the console powered and the USB connected until the process finishes or reports a definite error. Do not remove power during the update.
A USB drive is useful only for this offline-update route. It is not a universal fix for a failed game installation, a sign-in error or a suspected hardware fault. If the troubleshooter rejects the drive, stop and recheck Microsoft’s current format, capacity and file requirements instead of trying random firmware files.

Reset the Xbox One only after the update paths fail
The Startup Troubleshooter also offers Reset this Xbox. Resetting is a higher-impact action than restarting or applying an offline update. Before selecting it, confirm that you know the Microsoft account credentials used on the console and understand which saves are synchronized to the cloud.
| Reset choice | What it does | Risk and preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Keep games and apps | Resets the console system and settings while retaining installed games and apps where the option is available | Settings and local state can still be lost; you will need to sign in and reconfigure the console |
| Remove everything | Erases games, apps, accounts and console data before returning the system to a setup state | Highest impact; use only after understanding the data loss and confirming account access and cloud-save status |
The exact wording and availability of these choices can depend on the recovery state. Read the confirmation screen carefully. If you cannot sign in afterward, do not choose a destructive reset until you have recovered the account credentials.
Compare the recovery options
| Option | Best fit | Internet required? | Equipment | Data/settings risk | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clean restart and one retry | Transient update or installation state | Yes for the retry | None | Low | Yes |
| Storage, service and connection checks | Download or install failures | Connection check requires network access | None | Low | Yes |
| Cancel and restart one game/app install | One digital title fails while other content works | Yes | None | Usually limited to that download | Yes |
| Offline system update | Normal online system update cannot complete and Startup Troubleshooter is available | No, after the USB is prepared | Correctly prepared USB flash drive and a computer | System-update risk; do not interrupt power | Not guaranteed; follow the recovery result |
| Reset this Xbox — keep games and apps | Recovery remains possible but system state is damaged | Usually needed again for sign-in and updates | None | Settings and local state may be lost | No simple undo |
| Reset this Xbox — remove everything | Final console recovery option after understanding data loss | Needed during setup and updates | None | Highest; console data is erased | No |
| Xbox Support or qualified repair | Offline update and documented reset choices fail | Depends on the support channel | Exact error and console details | Varies by repair | Depends on the work performed |
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Contact Xbox Support or a qualified console-repair provider when the error returns after the documented recovery choices, when the console repeatedly reboots into the Startup Troubleshooter, or when multiple update and installation attempts fail despite available storage and a working connection.

- The complete on-screen message and any second error code.
- Whether the trigger was a system update, digital install, disc install, sign-in or startup.
- Console model, operating-system version if visible, and available internal storage.

This record prevents support from repeating unrelated Windows procedures and helps distinguish a console software recovery issue from a storage or drive symptom.
Windows fixes that do not belong on an Xbox One
Do not run Windows-only commands such as System File Checker, registry edits or PowerShell AppX removal on an Xbox One. The console does not provide the same Windows desktop environment, and those instructions cannot repair its firmware or Xbox installation state. Likewise, do not apply a USB package from an unofficial source or interrupt an update because a progress screen appears to pause.
Practical checklist
- Verify that the code is 0x80070057, not the title’s 0X800700057 spelling or another number.
- Photograph the full message and note the failed action.
- Power the console off completely, wait briefly and retry once.
- Check internet access, Xbox service availability and internal storage.
- For one digital title, cancel only that installation and restart it from the library.
- If a system update fails and Startup Troubleshooter appears, use Microsoft’s current Offline system update instructions.
- Consider Reset this Xbox only after confirming account credentials and cloud-save status.
- If recovery fails, give Xbox Support the complete code, model, version and symptom history.
If you also need an optional shortcut for a separate Windows PC problem, Outbyte PC Repair is designed for Windows rather than Xbox consoles; it cannot replace the Xbox recovery steps for this error.
Bottom line
Xbox One error 0x80070057 is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis. Verify the code, identify whether an update or installation triggered it, try one clean restart and the basic network and storage checks, then use the Startup Troubleshooter’s offline update path when appropriate. Reserve a reset for escalation, and seek Xbox Support or qualified repair when the documented recovery options fail.
