If Xbox party chat cannot hear your microphone on a Windows 11 PC, first check the headset’s connection and mute switch, then verify that Windows detects the right microphone and allows the app to use it. These checks help identify whether the problem is with the headset, Windows audio settings, or the chat app; they are general Windows troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed Xbox-specific fixes.
1. Check the headset and microphone in Windows

Make sure the headset is firmly connected to the PC. If it uses USB, try reconnecting it; if it uses a cable, check that the plug is seated correctly.

Turn off any mute switch on the headset, cable, or microphone.

Open Settings > System > Sound and find Input. Select the microphone you intend to use.

Use Windows’ input test and speak into the microphone. Listen to the sample, then adjust the input volume if it is too quiet.
If the input test does not register your voice, troubleshoot the device or Windows audio before focusing on party chat. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide covers connection, selection, input level, and driver checks.

2. Allow microphone access in Windows 11
Windows privacy settings can prevent an app from using a microphone even when the device works in Sound settings.

Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.

Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.

If the Xbox app appears in the app list, make sure its microphone permission is on.

If you use Xbox as a desktop app, also turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop apps may not appear as individual entries in the list.

These are Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 labels and path; if your interface differs, look for the equivalent microphone privacy controls. See Microsoft’s Windows privacy settings guide for how app and desktop-app permissions work.
3. If Windows still does not detect the microphone
Return to the connection, mute, selected input, and input-test checks first. If the microphone is still missing from Windows or produces no input, investigate the audio driver using Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting steps. Driver changes are a later diagnostic, not the first thing to try.

If the device remains undetected after software checks, the headset or microphone may be faulty. Consider replacement only then; check that the connection type (such as USB, 3.5 mm, or a wireless receiver) and microphone are compatible with your PC and the app, and review the return policy. No particular headset model has been tested for this issue.

If Windows audio is malfunctioning beyond the party chat microphone, Microsoft’s general audio guidance includes restarting the Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) services. Treat this as a later Windows diagnostic, not a confirmed fix for Xbox party chat. Microsoft explains these and other checks in its Windows sound and audio troubleshooting guide.
What these checks do not establish
The steps above address the microphone and Windows audio path. They do not establish Xbox-specific party controls, NAT or Teredo requirements, firewall allow rules, or whether Xbox services are currently having an outage. Avoid broadly disabling Windows Firewall or changing ports or registry settings based on these microphone checks. Microsoft’s firewall overview describes general firewall controls but does not provide Xbox party-chat-specific rules. For a network or service issue, consult current official Xbox support and status information.
