If Firefox reports that xul.dll is missing, shows a “XULRunner platform version” mismatch, says “Couldn’t load XPCOM,” or will not open after an update, the safest primary fix is a clean Firefox reinstall. Download the current installer from Mozilla using another browser, uninstall Firefox, remove only leftover Firefox program files, and reinstall. Do not download a replacement xul.dll from an unofficial DLL site.
Your bookmarks and passwords normally remain available because Firefox stores profile data separately from its program files. The important distinction is to remove the Firefox installation directory when instructed, not your profile.

What a xul.dll error means
xul.dll is a Firefox program file. Firefox cannot start when that file is missing, damaged, from a different build, or unable to load one of its dependencies. The same underlying installation problem can produce several different messages, so copy the exact wording before changing anything.

Protect your Firefox profile before repairing the installation
Firefox separates the executable files installed under its program directory from the user profile that contains bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs, windows, saved passwords, cookies, and web-form data. A complete reinstall targets the program files; it does not require deleting the profile.
- Write down the exact error text and when it began, especially whether it followed a Firefox update, Windows update, extension installation, or security-software alert.
- If Firefox still opens intermittently, export or otherwise back up any data you cannot afford to lose before making changes.
- Save the Firefox installer before uninstalling. This matters if Firefox is your only browser or if the current installation is preventing normal web access.
- Do not delete a profile folder while removing program files. A new profile is a diagnostic option, not a prerequisite for reinstalling.
Complete Firefox reinstall for xul.dll and XULRunner errors
Mozilla’s repair procedure removes the Firefox program and installs a fresh copy. Follow the sequence in order so an old executable or partially updated file is not reused.
- Record the dialog. Capture the wording, including any version number, file name, or entry-point text. This determines whether you should continue to runtime or security checks after reinstalling.
- Restart Windows once. A restart can release a file locked by an update or security scanner. Try Firefox again after Windows finishes loading. If the same error returns, continue rather than repeatedly launching it.
- Download the current installer with another browser. Use Mozilla’s official Firefox download page and save the installer locally. Do this before uninstalling so a failed launch does not leave you without an installer.
- Uninstall Firefox. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Mozilla Firefox, choose the uninstall command, and complete the wizard. The wording can vary slightly between Windows editions.
- Inspect the program directory. If the uninstaller leaves Firefox files behind, close all Firefox processes and remove only the Firefox installation directory. The default 64-bit and 32-bit locations are
C:Program FilesMozilla FirefoxandC:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefox. If you installed Firefox somewhere else, use that known program directory. Do not remove a profile directory. - Run the saved installer. Double-click the installer you downloaded from Mozilla and allow it to install Firefox normally. A fresh installation supplies a matching set of program files, including
xul.dll. - Restart Firefox and test a simple launch. First check whether the browser opens to a normal window. Then test a new tab and a previously used site. If Firefox starts, add extensions back gradually rather than restoring every change at once.
- Restart Windows if the installer or Firefox requests it. This ensures pending replacement operations and runtime registrations have completed before you judge the result.
If the uninstaller reports that Firefox is not present but the old program folder remains, the leftover-folder step is the part that prevents a mismatched XULRunner installation from returning. Delete only the known Firefox program folder; removing unrelated files can create a different Windows problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen reinstalling does not solve the startup failure
A clean program installation rules out many damaged-file cases, but it does not rule out a bad profile, an extension, a theme, a missing runtime, or software that injects code into Firefox. Move to the branch that matches your symptoms instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Try Troubleshoot Mode for an add-on or theme conflict
Troubleshoot Mode starts Firefox with extensions and themes disabled and with certain customizations bypassed. If Firefox opens in this mode, disable or remove the extension or theme added or updated immediately before the failure, then restart normally. Re-enable items one at a time so the offending change can be identified.
If Firefox cannot stay open long enough to use the menu, use its startup choice for Troubleshoot Mode when offered. Do not interpret a successful Troubleshoot Mode launch as proof that xul.dll itself is fixed; it indicates that the normal profile configuration is part of the failure.
Use Refresh Firefox when the profile is the problem
From a working Firefox window, open Help > More Troubleshooting Information and choose Refresh Firefox. Refresh keeps bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs, windows, passwords, cookies, and web-form data. It removes extensions and themes and resets preferences, so settings such as the home page, search choices, and custom configuration may need to be set again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Refresh is appropriate when the installation is present but startup remains unreliable after reinstalling, especially if Troubleshoot Mode works. It is less disruptive than creating a completely new profile, but it is not a way to preserve every customization.

Create a new profile as an isolation test
A new Firefox profile starts with clean settings and no existing extensions. Use Firefox’s Profile Manager when available (the Windows command firefox.exe -P opens it on standard installations), create a separate profile, and launch that profile without deleting the original. If the new profile starts normally, the original profile contains the conflicting setting, extension, or damaged data. Keep the original until you have confirmed that the personal data you need is available in the new profile.
Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime when the error names a runtime DLL
Not every startup dialog mentioning a DLL is a missing Firefox file. Mozilla identifies an incomplete or corrupt Microsoft Visual C++ installation as a possible source of missing runtime components, particularly VCRUNTIME140_1.dll.
- Read the dialog carefully. A message naming
VCRUNTIME140_1.dllor another Visual C++ component calls for a runtime repair rather than downloading that DLL separately. - Obtain Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable installer from Microsoft.
- Run the installer and choose its repair or install action as presented for the existing runtime.
- Restart Windows, then launch Firefox again.
Installing or repairing the runtime does not replace the Firefox reinstall when xul.dll itself is missing or the message says that XULRunner versions are incompatible. Treat the named file as a clue to which component is failing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check antivirus, firewall, and other security software
Security software can quarantine a Firefox program file, block a newly updated executable, or prevent a component from loading. Review the product’s quarantine and detection history for the time the error began, install its current updates, and check whether Firefox is being blocked by an application-control or firewall rule.
- Do not restore a quarantined file blindly. First verify that the Firefox installer came from Mozilla and that the detection is not part of a wider malware event.
- Use the security product’s supported way to review an exclusion or allow-list entry only when you understand what it changes. Remove temporary exceptions after testing.
- Run a reputable malware scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly, the browser was redirected, or other applications are behaving abnormally.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection merely to make Firefox start.
If security software repeatedly removes a freshly installed Firefox component, resolve that conflict with the security vendor’s current definitions and support guidance before attempting more reinstalls.
Understand third-party DLL injection
Other Windows applications can inject DLL code into Firefox. Mozilla notes that this can make Firefox appear responsible for a crash or performance problem even though the injected module belongs to another application. Known-problematic modules can sometimes be blocked, but Mozilla describes static DLL blocking as a last resort because it normally breaks functionality in the application that installed the DLL.
Use this branch when Firefox still crashes or behaves erratically after a clean reinstall and a new profile, particularly if the failure began after installing system-tuning, security, overlay, accessibility, recording, or other software that integrates with browsers. Identify the external application first; do not delete arbitrary DLLs from Windows folders. If a block is considered, understand that the originating application’s feature may stop working.
Choose the right remedy instead of repeating the same fix
| Situation | Is the Firefox program likely damaged? | Does the profile need to be preserved? | Recommended next action |
|---|---|---|---|
Missing xul.dll, “Couldn’t load XPCOM,” or files left after an update |
Yes, or the files are from different versions | Yes; leave it in place | Save the installer, uninstall, remove leftover program files, and reinstall |
| “XULRunner platform version … is not compatible” | Very likely | Yes | Use the complete reinstall sequence rather than copying one DLL |
| Firefox starts only in Troubleshoot Mode | Not necessarily | Yes | Disable or remove the responsible extension or theme; use Refresh if settings remain unstable |
| Firefox fails after reinstall but a new profile works | Probably not | Keep the old profile until data is migrated safely | Repair or replace the problematic profile configuration |
The dialog names VCRUNTIME140_1.dll |
Possibly; the immediate fault may be a runtime dependency | Yes | Repair Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable, reboot, and retest |
| A security product quarantines Firefox files | Possibly, but removal may be caused externally | Yes | Review quarantine, update security definitions, scan for malware, and resolve the block |
| Failure continues with a clean install and new profile | Less likely | Not the first suspect | Investigate injected third-party DLLs and other system-level conflicts |
What not to do
- Do not download a standalone
xul.dllfrom a random DLL mirror. A file from a different Firefox build can recreate the version mismatch, and an unverified binary creates an avoidable security risk. - Do not copy a DLL from another computer. Firefox program files must match the rest of the installed build and its dependencies.
- Do not delete the profile as a first step. That can remove the bookmarks, passwords, history, cookies, and other data the reinstall is designed to preserve.
- Do not use registry cleaners as a substitute for reinstalling Firefox. The documented remedy is to replace the Firefox program files and then isolate profile, runtime, or security conflicts if needed.
- Do not assume every DLL message has the same cause. The exact file name and wording determine whether you need a Firefox reinstall, a profile repair, a Visual C++ repair, or a security-software investigation.
How to tell whether the repair worked
A successful repair has three observable parts: Firefox launches without the original dialog, a normal window can open a new tab, and the personal data expected from the existing profile is present. If the browser opens only after selecting Troubleshoot Mode, the program files may be intact while an extension, theme, or preference still needs attention. If the error returns immediately after a clean reinstall, stop replacing files and follow the runtime, security, or third-party-module branches above.
