How to Fix “You Must Be Logged in to Steam” in Batman: Arkham Asylum

If Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition says “You must be logged in to Steam” while Steam is already open, first confirm that the game is owned by the signed-in account and installed through Steam—not merely added as a shortcut. Then restart Steam, verify the game files, and launch the correct executable. If the error began after installing Asylum Reborn or another mod, running BmLauncher.exe as administrator is a targeted fix worth trying.

What the error actually means

The message means that the game or its launcher could not validate the expected Steam session. It does not necessarily mean Steam is logged out. The cause may be a different Steam account, missing ownership, a non-Steam shortcut, damaged files, an incorrect launch path, a mod launcher, or a permissions problem.

This guide applies primarily to the Steam version of Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition (App ID 35140). Steam’s listed system requirements are legacy requirements from the game’s original release and are not a guarantee of compatibility with modern Windows versions.

1. Confirm that this Steam account owns the game

1. Open Steam and select Library.
2. Search for Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition.
3. Check that Steam shows Play, Install, or another normal ownership state.
4. Launch it from the Library rather than from a copied game folder or an external shortcut.

A shortcut created with Add a Non-Steam Game only places a shortcut in the Steam interface. It does not add the game license to the account and cannot satisfy a Steam ownership check. 2. Restart Steam completely

1. Close the game.
2. In Steam, choose Steam > Exit. Do not only close the window.
3. Wait a few seconds, then start Steam again.
4. Sign into the account that owns the game.
5. Launch the game from the Library.

If the error remains, restart Windows before moving to the repair steps. Steam’s general game-launch troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting the client before deeper repairs.

3. Verify the game files

1. Open Library.
2. Right-click Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition and select Properties.
3. Open Installed Files.
4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
5. Wait for the check to finish, restart Steam, and test the game.

Steam may report that some files failed validation because local configuration files are expected to differ. That does not automatically mean the repair failed. File verification can replace modified files, however, so mod users may need to reinstall or reapply their modifications afterward. 4. Test the game’s own launcher

Find the Steam library where the game is installed. The default path is usually:

Launching the executable directly is a diagnostic step recommended in Steam’s troubleshooting material. It can help identify whether the failure occurs during Steam’s Library handoff or inside the game launcher; it is not a way to bypass Steam authentication. Keep Steam open and signed in while testing.

5. If you use Asylum Reborn or another mod

If the error appeared after installing Asylum Reborn – HD Texture Pack, TexMod, an Advanced Launcher, a widescreen fix, ReShade, or another modification, first test the unmodified game:

1. Temporarily disable or remove the mod according to its documentation.
2. Verify the Steam files.
3. Launch the vanilla game from the Steam Library.
4. If it works, reinstall the mod carefully and follow its readme exactly.

For the specific Asylum Reborn Advanced Launcher problem, a recent Steam Community guide and matching discussion report say the error was resolved by running BmLauncher.exe as administrator:

1. Open the game’s Binaries folder.
2. Right-click BmLauncher.exe and choose Properties.
3. Open the Compatibility tab.
4. Enable Run this program as an administrator.
5. Select Apply, then OK.
6. Start Steam first, then launch the mod or Advanced Launcher again.

This is a targeted fix for that modded launcher setup, not a guaranteed solution for every vanilla installation. Administrator mode may be unnecessary when no mod is installed. Also check whether the mod requires copying only the contents of a folder; copying the entire folder can leave files in the wrong location. Do not assume every mod should be pointed at ShippingPC-BmGame.exe. Use the executable specified by that mod’s documentation.

6. Refresh Steam’s client files without deleting the game

If Steam itself appears damaged, refresh its client files before uninstalling everything:

1. Exit Steam completely.
2. Open the Steam installation folder.
3. Delete the Steam files there except steam.exe and the steamapps folder.
4. Start steam.exe and allow Steam to update itself.

Do not delete steamapps, which contains installed games. Be cautious with userdata, saves, and configuration files, and back up important data before manually changing the installation. The exact Steam folder can differ from the default location. This procedure comes from Steam’s official troubleshooting guidance.

7. Check bundled dependencies and security software

Inspect the game’s installation folder for bundled installers or folders containing components such as DirectX, PhysX, Visual C++, or other legacy dependencies. Steam notes that these may need to be run manually if first-launch installation was canceled or blocked. Do not assume a particular installer filename; it can vary by edition and installation.

Also check whether Windows Security or another antivirus program quarantined a Steam or game file. You can temporarily disable nonessential overlays and background utilities for testing, and add narrowly scoped exceptions only if you trust the installation. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection, and do not download replacement executables or steam_api.dll files from random websites.

8. Configure Offline Mode only after a successful online launch

Offline Mode is not a workaround for an installation that has never authenticated. Steam’s supported setup is:

1. Start Steam while online.
2. Ensure the game is updated.
3. Launch the game once online.
4. Close the game and make sure Steam can save your credentials.
5. Choose Steam > Go Offline.

Games that require an external launcher or an active connection may still fail offline. If Steam requests a login in Offline Mode, reconnecting is the supported solution. See Steam’s Offline Mode requirements.

Avoid these unsafe fixes

• Do not download random steam_api.dll files.
• Do not use cracked launchers, repacks, or DRM-bypass instructions.
• Do not permanently disable antivirus protection.
• Do not delete the entire Steam folder without backups.
• Do not assume administrator mode can make an unowned copy legitimate.

If the game is present in the correct account, the files verify successfully, the vanilla installation still fails, and Steam’s client refresh does not help, use the Steam Support page for Batman: Arkham Asylum.
