The warning means your browser cannot verify a secure HTTPS connection to the page. The cause may be the website, your network, or your device. Do not enter passwords, payment details, or other personal information while the warning is displayed. Work through the checks below: first determine whether one site or many sites are affected, then complete any public-Wi-Fi sign-in, test Incognito, update software, check HTTPS scanning, and involve the network administrator or site owner when the problem is outside your control.
What “Your connection is not private” means
HTTPS certificates authenticate a website and help encrypt traffic between that site and your browser. Chrome shows a full-page privacy error when certificate validation fails. Google Chrome Help describes the situation plainly: “If you get a full-page error message saying ‘Your connection is not private,’ then there’s a problem with the site, the network, or your device.”

A certificate can fail because it is expired, issued for a different host name, signed by an authority your device does not trust, incompatible with an older protocol, or replaced by a network or security product that intercepts HTTPS traffic. The same underlying problem appears under different wording in other browsers: Firefox may say “This connection is untrusted,” Safari may say “Safari can’t verify the identity of the website,” and Edge may show a security-certificate warning.

First, identify the scope of the error
| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate | Who can usually fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Only one domain fails while other HTTPS sites load | That site’s certificate or HTTPS configuration | The site owner or hosting administrator |
| Many unrelated domains fail on one device | Browser extensions, operating-system trust data, security-software HTTPS scanning, or device state | You, with help from your security-software or device administrator |
| Many devices fail on the same Wi-Fi | Captive-portal sign-in, proxy, router, or managed-network interception | The network operator or administrator |
| The warning appears only on an enterprise network | Missing or incorrectly deployed proxy certificate | Your organization’s IT administrator |
| A local router or development device uses a known self-signed certificate | Expected certificate trust limitation on that controlled device | The authorized administrator of the device |
Record the exact error code shown below the warning, such as NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID. That detail helps distinguish an unknown issuer from an expired certificate, a name mismatch, or an interception problem.
Fix the warning in a safe order
-
Check whether the problem is limited to one site
Open two or three unrelated, familiar HTTPS websites. If they load normally and one domain does not, stop changing settings on your device; the failing domain is more likely to have an expired certificate, a host-name mismatch, an incomplete certificate chain, or another server-side HTTPS error. If nearly every site fails, continue with the device and network checks below.
-
Complete a public Wi-Fi sign-in
Cafés, hotels, airports, libraries, and similar networks often require a browser login before allowing normal internet access. While connected to that Wi-Fi, open a page whose address begins with
http://, nothttps://. The network’s sign-in page may then appear. Finish the access or terms prompt, close the page, and retry the HTTPS address.Recommended: Fix Windows Errors and Clear Junk Files in Minutes - Free Scan →Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Special offer. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. If the login page never appears, disconnect and reconnect to the network, then repeat the plain-HTTP test. Do not submit sensitive information on an unexpected page; use only the sign-in flow supplied by the venue or its staff.
-
Test the address in an Incognito or private window
Open Chrome’s menu and choose New Incognito window, then visit the same address. Incognito gives you a quick way to check whether a normal-window extension or stored browser state is involved.

If the page works in Incognito, return to a normal window and disable extensions one at a time. In Chrome, open the menu, choose Extensions, then Manage extensions. Turn off one extension, reload the page, and repeat until the warning disappears. Remove or update the extension that causes the failure, and re-enable extensions that are not involved.
If the warning also appears in Incognito, extensions are less likely to be the cause; continue to software, security, and network checks.

Update the browser
In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Help, and select About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for an available update on that page; restart the browser when it asks. Use the current release offered for your operating system rather than an unofficial download.
Outdated browser components can reject certificates that newer clients accept. Updating also ensures that the browser has current certificate and protocol compatibility information.
-
Update the operating system
Install pending operating-system updates through the system’s normal update settings, restart when required, and test the site again. The operating system supplies trusted certificate authorities and other networking components used during HTTPS validation, so an old trust store or browser component can cause a false rejection of an otherwise valid certificate.

Older devices can have a narrower compatibility window. Cloudflare reported on September 9, 2024, that some devices running Android 7.0 and earlier could encounter access problems after a certificate-chain change. Its guidance for site operators mentions Google Trust Services as a certificate-authority option. If an old phone cannot receive operating-system updates, use a supported device or ask the site administrator whether an alternate, compatible endpoint is available; do not install a certificate from an unknown source.

Test security software’s HTTPS scanning
Some antivirus and endpoint-security products inspect encrypted traffic through a feature called HTTPS protection, HTTPS scanning, or similar wording. A broken or untrusted inspection certificate can produce the privacy warning on many sites.
Use the security product’s settings to disable only that HTTPS-inspection feature temporarily as a diagnostic test. Leave the product’s other protection enabled, reload the page, and immediately re-enable HTTPS scanning after the test. If the warning vanishes only while scanning is off, update or repair the security product, or ask its vendor or your administrator how to install its current inspection certificate. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
-
Check for a proxy or managed-network interception
On a work, school, or other managed network, HTTPS traffic may pass through an inspection proxy. Products such as Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks, or Fortinet can present a proxy certificate to your browser. If that certificate is missing, expired, or not installed in the device’s trusted store, Chrome may show
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID.Contact the network administrator and provide the exact domain, time, browser, and error code. The administrator should deploy the organization’s approved certificate through its normal management system. Do not import a certificate sent by an unknown person or downloaded from an unverified page; doing so could allow that party to read traffic that should be protected.

Retry from a different trusted network
Use a known-good connection, such as mobile data or another trusted Wi-Fi network, only as a comparison test. If the site works there, the original network, captive portal, proxy, or router is the likely source. If the same domain fails everywhere while other sites work, the evidence points back to that site’s certificate or HTTPS configuration.
Understand the certificate symptom
Expired certificate
A certificate has a validity period. Once it expires, browsers cannot rely on it to authenticate the site. Only the site operator can renew and correctly deploy that certificate. Updating your browser will not repair an expired certificate on someone else’s server.
Host-name mismatch
The certificate must cover the exact host name in the address bar. A certificate issued for one domain cannot automatically authenticate a different domain or subdomain. Check that the address is spelled correctly; if it is, the site owner must correct the certificate or HTTPS configuration.

NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID commonly indicates that the certificate’s issuing authority is not trusted by the browser or that an intermediary certificate is missing. On a managed network, an inspection proxy is a frequent explanation. On a public site, the operator needs to install a complete, trusted chain.

Weak, obsolete, or incompatible protocol
Older clients and outdated servers may not share a protocol or cryptographic configuration that current browsers accept. Updating the browser and operating system is the safe client-side response. If only one site fails, its administrator must modernize the HTTPS configuration.
Interception by a network or security product
When a proxy or security product substitutes its own certificate for the site’s certificate, the browser must trust that product’s authorized certificate. A missing or incorrect installation produces a warning even when the public site itself is configured correctly. The organization or security-product administrator must fix that trust relationship.
When the website owner must act
If one domain fails while unrelated sites work, send the site owner the exact browser message and error code rather than repeatedly changing your device. The owner should inspect certificate expiry, host-name matching, the full certificate chain, server-name indication (SNI), and the site’s HTTPS configuration.
Cloudflare’s documentation describes Chrome’s privacy warning in connection with certificate-authority problems, SNI issues, and outdated-client compatibility. It also notes that a certificate-chain change can affect older clients. Cloudflare’s “General SSL errors” page was last updated April 16, 2026; the details and available certificate-authority choices can change as browsers and operating systems retire older trust paths.
Google Chrome Help states the required remedy for a site owner: “To resolve this issue, the site owner must secure the site and your data with HTTPS.” A visitor cannot renew another organization’s certificate or repair its server chain.
Can you safely bypass the warning?
For a public website, treat the warning as a stop sign. Choose Back to safety when that option is available, and do not enter personal, login, payment, or recovery information. A page marked “Not secure” or “Dangerous” should not receive sensitive data.
A bypass can be appropriate only in a narrow case: you are the authorized administrator accessing a controlled local device, and you knowingly configured its self-signed certificate. Even then, verify that the address belongs to the intended device and that you understand the exposure. This exception does not make it safe to bypass a warning on an unfamiliar public website, a banking page, an account portal, or a random download site.
A practical decision checklist
- One domain, other sites work: capture the error and contact that site’s owner.
- Every site on public Wi-Fi: open an
http://page and complete the captive-portal sign-in. - Normal window only: test Incognito, then disable extensions individually.
- Many sites on one device: update the browser and operating system, then test HTTPS scanning.
- Only a work or school network: contact the administrator about the managed proxy certificate.
- Only an old device: install available system updates; older Android versions may lack a compatible certificate chain.
- Known local self-signed device: proceed only with administrator authorization and a verified local address.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
If the warning is part of wider Windows crashes, broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared-DLL problems, or performance issues, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut. It can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, warn about potentially unwanted apps, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredder, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
Do not bypass “Your connection is not private” by default. Identify whether one site or an entire network is affected, complete any captive-portal login, test Incognito and extensions, update the browser and operating system, diagnose HTTPS scanning without leaving protection disabled, and involve the network administrator or site owner when the certificate problem is outside your control.
