How to Fix YouTube Ending a 24/7 Devotional Live Stream Automatically

Use Live Control Room timestamps and encoder and network logs to identify why a devotional stream ended. YouTube’s 12-hour warning concerns archives and DVR, not a universal live-stop timer.

If a 24/7 devotional stream ends, first establish what stopped: YouTube’s event, the encoder’s outgoing feed, or the network connection. Check the timestamped health messages in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, compare them with encoder and network logs, then review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a universal 12-hour timer that automatically ends live streams; its 12-hour warning concerns archiving and DVR/replay.

Why does my YouTube live stream keep ending?

The end of a broadcast can have several causes, and the symptom alone does not identify which one occurred. YouTube says an encoder stream ends when the encoder stops sending content. A disconnected or crashed encoder, a network interruption, stream settings, or a YouTube-reported error may therefore be relevant. You need the event’s health messages and the systems’ logs to distinguish them.

YouTube’s Live Control Room monitors the incoming stream and reports errors through the Health Indicator. Its error messages are timestamped; red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewing problems, while yellow errors may degrade quality. Start with the exact message and its time rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube’s live streaming error messages

Diagnose the failure in order

  1. Record the end time and status. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and inspect the affected event in Live Control Room. Note whether the event is ended or still awaiting an incoming feed, and record any timestamped Health Indicator messages. Compare the time with the encoder’s logs and the computer or device’s uptime.
  2. Verify the encoder is sending to the right event. Check that the encoder is running and using the correct YouTube stream URL and matching stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address the encoder uses to send the feed. If you suspect the key has been exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key before restarting. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
  3. Inspect auto-start and auto-stop. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live, select the stream, and check its stream settings. These options let the encoder start or stop streaming. If you created the event using Reuse settings, check them even if you do not remember enabling them: YouTube says the prior stream’s auto-start and auto-stop selections are copied. Manage live stream settings
  4. Follow the reported error before adjusting encoding. YouTube lists issues such as an incorrect stream format and a daily live-stream limit. If the message points to the encoder configuration, verify its format and settings against YouTube’s guidance for the stream you are sending. YouTube recommends constant bitrate, but the correct configuration depends on the encoder and stream. Change one setting at a time and check the result. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  5. Check upload capacity and connection stability. Measure upload speed, not download speed, and include other household or office traffic and any backup feed in the calculation. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s bitrate. Its guidance warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If logs point to unstable Wi-Fi, testing a wired network connection is reasonable; a cable will not fix an encoder crash, incorrect settings, account restriction, or YouTube-side issue. YouTube’s streaming tips
  6. Test before leaving the stream unattended. Use representative audio and movement, monitor stream health, test encoder failover if you have it, verify that the local recording is growing, and check that the event is accessible from its watch page and on mobile. YouTube recommends these checks in its streaming tips and encoder guidance.

Does YouTube stop live streams after 12 hours?

YouTube’s documentation does not say that every live stream is automatically terminated at 12 hours. The 12-hour figure is an archive and replay warning: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its separate DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours. These limitations can explain a missing or incomplete replay, but do not prove that YouTube ended the live broadcast. Archive live streams · Turn on DVR on live streams

For a long devotional broadcast, keep a local archive and verify that it is recording and growing. YouTube also recommends a local backup. Do not treat a replay’s absence as evidence that the live stream itself ended at the same time. YouTube’s encoder guide

Match the evidence to the next step

Evidence What it points to Next check
A timestamped Live Control Room error A reported incoming-stream or event problem; the exact message matters. Use the message’s recommended fix and compare its timestamp with encoder logs.
Encoder log shows it stopped or lost connection The outgoing feed may have ended before the YouTube event did. Check encoder status, stream URL/key, configuration, device uptime, and any crash or restart record.
Network log shows a disconnection or upload instability A connectivity interruption may have broken the feed. Check upload headroom, competing traffic, router logs, and—if Wi-Fi is implicated—a wired test.
Live event ended but encoder appears to have continued The available evidence does not yet establish why YouTube ended the event. Compare the exact times, inspect the event’s health messages and settings, and check for an account or platform message.
Live event ran, but replay is absent, incomplete, or cannot rewind far enough Archive or DVR limits may explain replay behavior without explaining a live interruption. Check stream duration and retain the verified local recording.

Reduce the chance of another interruption

  • Keep a record of the event end time, Live Control Room errors, encoder status, and network interruptions. This makes the next diagnosis evidence-based.
  • After editing settings or replacing a stream key, confirm the encoder is sending to the intended event and monitor its health before relying on it unattended.
  • Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, accounting for all competing traffic and any backup feed.
  • Test failover rather than assuming it works, and verify local recording growth before a long broadcast.
  • Review auto-start and auto-stop whenever you reuse a previous stream, since those selections carry forward.

YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe one universal restart interval for every channel. The right recovery plan depends on the cause shown by that channel’s health messages, encoder logs, and network records.
