If YouTube rejects a stream key from a Hetzner server, first replace it with the current key for the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Then check the stream URL and protocol, encoder support, and outbound firewall rules. A key error, an RTMPS/TLS problem, and a blocked connection can look similar, so diagnose the exact failure before changing firewall settings.
Start with the stream key and protect it
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Confirm you are using the stream configuration you intend to broadcast. Copy its current stream key and replace the saved key in your encoder’s stream-key field.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and check whether the feed appears in Live Control Room preview.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: do not put it in screenshots, logs, or public support posts. If you ask for help, redact it. YouTube: Manage live stream settings; YouTube: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Verify the URL and protocol separately
The stream URL and stream key are separate encoder inputs. A correct key paired with the wrong server URL or protocol can still fail.
- In Live Control Room, copy the Stream URL for the same stream configuration as the key.
- Paste the URL into the encoder’s server or URL field, and put the key only in its stream-key field.
- If you intend to use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s relevant workflow may show ordinary RTMP by default, so do not assume the displayed URL is RTMPS.
- If YouTube reports the specific error invalid SSL certificate, its RTMPS guidance suggests adding port 443 to the URL or configuring port 443 in the encoder. Do not treat port 443 as a universal setting for every YouTube stream.
YouTube describes RTMPS as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption. Follow the URL and port for your current Live Control Room configuration rather than guessing a destination IP or port. Check outbound traffic on the Hetzner firewall you actually use
A server encoder initiates a connection to YouTube. The relevant server-side question is whether the required outbound connection and its response traffic are allowed—not whether an inbound RTMP port was opened. Check both the effective Hetzner firewall rules and the operating system’s local firewall.
Hetzner Cloud Firewall
Hetzner says Cloud Firewall outbound traffic is allowed when no custom outbound rules are defined. If custom outbound rules exist, new traffic that does not match them is dropped; established and related return traffic is allowed because the Cloud Firewall is stateful. Inspect the rules applied to this server and permit the outbound connection to the ingestion endpoint and port supplied by the current YouTube stream URL. Hetzner’s default behavior for its Cloud Firewall does not establish what a separate host firewall permits. Hetzner Docs: FAQ: Cloud Firewalls.

Hetzner dedicated-server firewall
Do not apply Cloud Firewall assumptions to a Hetzner dedicated server. Hetzner documents its dedicated-server firewall as stateless. If outgoing filtering is enabled, response packets in the opposite direction can also be blocked unless the matching rules allow them. Check the applicable return-traffic rules for your server and ruleset; Hetzner’s examples involving TCP ACK and ephemeral ports are not a reason to copy rules without verifying your configuration. These are diagnostic branches, not a guarantee that every encoder will display the same message for a given cause. A timeout after you verify the URL can point to encoder RTMPS support or network reachability; do not label every connection failure an invalid key.

Check YouTube preview, eligibility, and encoder diagnostics
- Start the encoder with the verified URL and key, then look for the incoming stream in Live Control Room. YouTube instructs creators to wait for the preview before going live.
- If the feed never appears in preview, focus on the key, URL and protocol, encoder support, DNS/reachability, and outbound or return-traffic rules.
- If the feed reaches YouTube but you cannot start the live event, check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Update the encoder to its latest version and inspect its own status or error details. If video reaches YouTube but stream health is poor, YouTube also recommends checking encoder status and the outbound internet connection.
