If Zenless Zone Zero crashes on your Steam Deck, install available SteamOS updates and restart the device first. Valve’s SteamOS release notes include a fix for black screens in certain launchers, including Zenless Zone Zero; that may help if the launcher is blank, but it is not a guaranteed fix for crashes at login or during gameplay. If the problem remains, note exactly where it fails and contact HoYoverse support.
Identify where the crash happens
“Crashing on launch” can describe several different failures. Before changing settings, record what you see and when it happens:
- Blank or black launcher: the launcher opens to an empty screen or does not render correctly.
- Closes after pressing Start: the game exits before you reach login.
- Freezes at login: the launcher or game stops responding while you try to sign in.
- Crashes during gameplay: you get past login, but the game closes while playing.
Also note whether the problem began after a game or SteamOS update, whether SteamOS is on the stable or beta channel, and whether service maintenance is underway. Those details help describe the issue; by themselves, they do not identify its cause.
Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
- Connect the Deck to the internet and check for available SteamOS updates in the system’s Settings.
- Install available updates, then restart the Steam Deck.
- Try launching Zenless Zone Zero again and record whether the same symptom remains.
Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance recommends installing available system updates and restarting for system instability. Valve’s SteamOS release notes also document a black-screen fix for certain launchers, explicitly including Zenless Zone Zero. This is directly relevant to a blank launcher, but Valve’s note does not establish that the update fixes every kind of game crash. Check the release notes for your installed channel and version rather than assuming every Deck already has the fix.

Check for a recent game update or service maintenance
If the crash started immediately after a game update or occurs while HoYoverse services are under maintenance, note that timing and try again when the service is available. A July 2026 Steam discussion includes an anecdotal report of an intermittent launcher crash and another user who said their problem began after a June 27 update. Those posts do not confirm a widespread bug or prove that the update caused the crashes. Community speculation about maintenance causing Linux crashes is also unverified.
Use file verification only when an install problem is plausible
If an update failed or you suspect the installation is damaged, Steam’s installed-file verification can be a useful diagnostic check. It is not a proven cure for recurring crashes: a user in the same Steam discussion reported trying revalidation with inconsistent results. Avoid changing several settings at once, so you can tell whether any one change affected the symptom.

Why random Proton changes are not a reliable first fix
There is no official Steam Deck-specific procedure in the available guidance that prescribes a particular Proton version or launch command for these crashes. Individual reports describe Proton changes failing; one separate Proton issue concerns a login freeze on Fedora with an NVIDIA GPU, not a Steam Deck. That report should not be treated as evidence of the cause on a Deck. Unless you are following specific support guidance, first update and restart SteamOS and record the failure point rather than cycling through Proton versions or copying launch commands.
What Steam’s compatibility information does—and does not—tell you
Valve’s compatibility categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Its guidance says a Verified game using Proton must have its game and middleware supported, including anti-cheat; a separate launcher can also affect compatibility if users must navigate it manually. The guidance says: “The title shouldn’t display any compatibility warnings, and if there’s a launcher it should be navigable with a controller.” These criteria explain what Valve evaluates, but they do not establish that a particular crash has a specific cause.

Steam’s PC listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum operating system and 75 GB of available storage. Those are PC listing requirements, not certification of official SteamOS support or a diagnosis of a Steam Deck crash. Freeing storage is relevant if you do not meet the listed space requirement, but the listing does not connect a storage upgrade to fixing crashes.

A precise symptom report is more useful than saying only that the game “doesn’t start.”
