If a football broadcast drops, you can often keep up through official live text, score updates, licensed audio commentary or a club or league match centre. First identify whether the problem is the video, sound, app or internet connection; then check which alternative covers your exact match and location.
First, identify what has stopped working
A frozen picture with working audio points to a video problem; silence with a moving picture points to sound. If the broadcaster’s app or its scores are unresponsive too, the issue may be the app or your connection rather than the match coverage itself.
- Video interrupted: switch to official live text or scores, or look for licensed audio coverage.
- Audio interrupted: check whether the broadcaster offers live text or a match centre while you troubleshoot sound.
- Scores or app stuck: check that your internet connection is stable and refresh the service. Sky Sports gives those steps for scores that are not updating in its Scores app FAQ.
Choose a fallback that covers this fixture
Official live text and score updates
Check the broadcaster, league or club’s official match page for live text commentary, score updates and match-centre information. BBC Sport describes live text and score updates for Premier League coverage in its guide to following the Premier League on the BBC. Sky Sports’ Scores app can also be used to follow matches and receive notifications.
Licensed audio commentary
Look for an audio feed from a broadcaster or the club. For the UK Premier League, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds have rights to 209 matches per season under the 2025/26–2028/29 agreement; that season total does not mean every match is available to every listener. The BBC’s rights announcement and the Premier League announcement of UK live audio rights for BBC and talkSPORT describe the agreement and its coverage arrangements.

Club audio may be another option, but availability is fixture-specific. Liverpool FC, for example, described free live audio commentary and a Match Centre for its Liverpool v West Ham match in its match guide. Treat that as an example, not a promise that every club provides audio for every game.
Radio broadcast
If a local station carries the match, conventional AM/FM or digital radio may be a useful alternative to an internet stream. Ofcom says: “With either no delays, or very short ones, either AM/FM or digital radio offer the fastest way to follow the action.” This guidance appears in its advice on avoiding delay during the World Cup; it does not guarantee a station carries the fixture or can be received where you are. In Australia, the ABC Help Centre’s live sport radio listings illustrate that access can depend on the station, city and fixture.

Why the same match may not be available everywhere
Broadcast rights can differ by territory and by platform. A broadcaster’s television rights do not necessarily include the same online rights: ESPN says temporary muting or blurring on ESPN.com may be required when its digital rights differ from traditional TV rights. See ESPN Fan Support’s explanation of blurring or sound loss.
Before switching services, check the broadcaster’s official listings for your location and the exact fixture, then check the club or league match centre if needed. A service that covers one match, country or broadcast slot may not cover another.
