For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom USA staff recommend it as a series jumping-on point, and its modern presentation makes it a practical first choice. That is a staff recommendation, not a rule: the original games remain the better route if you want to experience the series’ early design history. Across the series, choose by game and by what you value rather than assuming every remake replaces its original.
How to choose between a remake and its original
The choice is mainly about what you want from a first playthrough: a modern entry point, a look at the series’ earlier design, or a particular version to collect. Controls and presentation matter, but so do platform access and the fact that some remakes reinterpret rather than reproduce their originals.
- Choose a remake if updated presentation and movement options are your priority.
- Choose an original if you want to experience the games in their historical form and can access the version you want to play.
- Consider both if you are interested in how Capcom revisited the games. The remakes are not all established as identical substitutes for their originals.
Capcom USA’s October 18, 2024 guide gives this staff recommendation for newcomers: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” That is a useful default, not a claim that it is the right first game for every player.
Resident Evil (1996) vs. the 2002 remake
Capcom describes the 2002 game as a reimagined take on the 1996 PlayStation original. Its enhanced release improves in-game models and backgrounds and adapts the original 4:3 game to a 16:9 view with a scrolling camera.

Pick the enhanced remake for updated presentation with control flexibility
The enhanced release retains the original tank-control option and adds modern analog movement. Camera and control settings can be adjusted in-game, making this the clearest case among these pairs for players who want a refreshed presentation without giving up access to classic controls.
Pick the 1996 original for the early series’ design history
If your aim is to see the original as it was released, the remake is not a substitute for that historical experience. Capcom’s 2014 platform list describes the release context at that time; it should not be treated as a current list of stores or supported platforms.

Resident Evil 2 (1998) vs. the 2019 remake
The 2019 game is the strongest practical starting point for a newcomer who wants a modern entry. Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said the team aimed to balance modernization with fidelity to the original. As he put it, “It was difficult and at times contradictory to balance bringing new and fresh ideas that would modernize the game while keeping it faithful to the original.” The remake returns players to the Raccoon Police Department as Leon and Claire, but that creative aim does not mean the two versions are identical.
Pick the 2019 game for a modern first playthrough
Its role as Capcom USA staff’s suggested jumping-on point makes it the most defensible default for a new player choosing between the two. It is a recommendation about where to jump in, not a definitive judgment on which version is better in every respect.

Pick the 1998 game to experience its distinct original design
Players interested in the series’ history have reason to seek out the original rather than treating the remake as a replacement. The official comparisons cited here do not establish a complete route-by-route inventory of changes, so claims about specific scenario differences should not be assumed from this overview.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) vs. the 2020 remake
Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Kanda frames the remake as Jill Valentine’s last escape from a doomed Raccoon City, reimagined with the RE Engine. That establishes its premise and modernization, but not a comprehensive comparison with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Choose the 2020 game if you want the modern reinterpretation; choose the 1999 version if your goal is to experience the original release. The official material cited here does not provide a full inventory of differences, so it cannot support specific claims about cut locations, modes, or scenarios.

If you prefer modern presentation, the 2023 remake may fit your priorities; if you want the original game’s historical form, choose the 2005 release. Platform and edition access
Availability varies by region and edition, so check local storefronts and retailers before choosing a version. In a September 9, 2026 announcement, Capcom France said Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition were scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 as digital editions from October 16, 2026, followed by boxed versions on January 29, 2027. Those announced dates are future dates as of October 3, 2026; the announcement is specific to France and does not establish matching schedules or edition names elsewhere. It also says the RE2 Deluxe Edition and RE4 Gold Edition include additional content.
For current purchase decisions, confirm that the edition and format you want are actually available in your market. A dated platform announcement is not a guarantee of current stock or a universal release schedule.
