Run SteamCMD’s app_update command with validate, using the dedicated-server app ID for your ARK edition. For ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE), the command is app_update 376030 validate. ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) uses a separate dedicated-server app, reported as App ID 2430930. Using the client ID, the wrong edition, or Steam’s desktop-client verification option will not reliably validate a dedicated server.

The exact validation commands
SteamCMD accepts validate as an argument to app_update. Enter the command while SteamCMD is pointed at the folder that contains your dedicated server installation.

| Game | Dedicated-server App ID | Command | Confidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE) | 376030 |
app_update 376030 validate |
Documented by the ARK Official Community Wiki setup instructions. |
| ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) | 2430930 |
app_update 2430930 validate |
Reported as the separate free ASA dedicated-server app by a hosting setup guide; this ID has lower confidence than the ASE ID. |
Do not substitute the game-client ID. ASE’s client uses App ID 346110, which appears in older forum posts and an archived fan wiki; it is not the ASE dedicated-server ID. ASA’s client is reported as App ID 2399830, separate from its dedicated-server app.
Identify your ARK edition before validating
ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE)
Use ASE’s dedicated-server ID, 376030. This is the edition associated with the verified command form app_update 376030 validate. If your server files were installed for ASE, changing only the executable or startup options will not turn them into ASA files; validation must target the app that supplied the installation.

ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA)
ASA is distributed differently from ASE. Current setup material reports a free, separate Steam dedicated-server app with ID 2430930, while the playable client is reported as 2399830. Because the dedicated-server ID comes from a hosting guide rather than a primary Valve or Wildcard page, treat it as a value to verify against the Steam app listing you use before running a production repair.
Why the ID matters
- The ID selects the product. SteamCMD validates the app represented by the number you provide.
- The server and client are different apps. A client ID can download or inspect a different set of files from the server installation.
- Edition confusion looks like a failed update. A command can complete successfully while leaving the actual server directory unchanged if it targets another app or another install folder.
How to force validation with SteamCMD
1. Stop the running server
Shut down the ARK server process before validating. This prevents files from being locked or changed while SteamCMD is checking them. If you operate several instances, identify the instance’s installation directory and stop only the process using that directory.

2. Open SteamCMD in the server installation context
Start SteamCMD and select the library or install directory where the dedicated server is installed. The command validates the app associated with the current SteamCMD installation target; it does not search every ARK folder on the machine.
3. Run the edition-specific command
For ASE, enter:
app_update 376030 validate
For ASA, use the reported dedicated-server ID only after confirming that your installation is ASA:

app_update 2430930 validate
The important detail is the position of validate: it is an argument on the same app_update command, after the dedicated-server App ID.
4. Let SteamCMD finish
Do not close SteamCMD when it first reports that the command was accepted. Validation checks the installed files and may download replacements when the local set does not match what Steam expects. The amount of work depends on the installation and the differences found; no reliable universal duration is published.

After SteamCMD exits the update operation, verify that you ran the command against the directory used by your server startup configuration. Start the server again and check its reported build in the same way you normally detect an update. If the server still reports an old build, continue with the diagnostic section instead of repeatedly launching validation against an uncertain target.
When should you use validate?
Validation is most useful after an interrupted download, suspected file corruption, a failed update, or a migration to a new disk. A hosting guide recommends it for an initial installation or when damage is suspected rather than automatically on every startup; that recommendation is not confirmed by an official Valve or Wildcard statement.

- First installation: run the command after the initial server download if you want SteamCMD to check the completed installation.
- Suspected corruption: validate after crashes, missing DLLs or assets, or an interrupted SteamCMD session.
- Update trouble: validate after an update appears to complete but the server starts on an older build.
- Routine starts: there is no documented requirement in the available official material to validate every time the server boots. Repeating it can add download and startup time without addressing a separate configuration problem.
Validation is not the same as updating the server process
The command asks SteamCMD to update and validate files. It does not restart a running ARK process, change launch arguments, alter save data, or apply settings from your server manager. Stop the process first, validate the files, and then start the process that points to those files.
A successful validation also does not prove that you selected the correct edition or folder. App ID correctness and the path used by your startup script are separate checks.

If the server is still stuck on an old version
Community discussions describe servers that remain on an older version even after validate. A December 2024 Steam discussion reports this behavior for an ASA server. An older, 2020-era ASE discussion describes SteamCMD lag, and one participant said that forced validation through a server manager resolved that individual case. These are user reports, not a verified universal diagnosis or fix; no official cause was identified in the available documentation.
Check 1: You used the right App ID
Recheck the edition and number. ASE should use 376030. Do not use ASE’s client ID 346110. For ASA, confirm that your source still identifies 2430930 as the dedicated-server app; its documentation is less authoritative than the ASE wiki entry.

Check 2: SteamCMD is writing to the folder your service starts
Servers are often launched by a scheduled task, container, control panel, or service unit. Compare that startup path with the SteamCMD library path. If they differ, validation may be repairing one copy while the service starts another. This is a path mismatch diagnosis, not evidence that ARK’s validation command itself failed.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check 3: The old process is still running
Confirm that every old ARK process using the installation has stopped before you validate and restart. A still-running process can continue serving the old files while the repaired installation sits unused.
Check 4: The update operation actually completed
Review the SteamCMD session for its final result rather than relying on an early progress message. If the connection drops or the session is interrupted, run the same edition-specific command again after connectivity is restored.
Check 5: Separate file validation from version availability
Validation can only obtain the build Steam makes available for that app. It cannot force a release that has not been published to the branch you are using, and it cannot correct a server that is pointed at a different branch or installation. The available material does not establish a universal cause for old-version reports, so do not treat repeated validation as a guaranteed solution.
Check 6: Treat server-manager “force update” buttons as wrappers
Community guides describe automatic validation and update scripts, and some managers expose a “force validate” action. Before using one, inspect which App ID and installation directory it passes to SteamCMD. A button that targets the client ID or a different folder can reproduce the problem while appearing to complete normally.
Steam client verification versus SteamCMD validation
| Method | Dedicated-server suitability | What to verify | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
SteamCMD app_update … validate |
The documented method for ASE; reported for ASA with its separate server ID. | Edition, dedicated-server App ID, and install directory. | One-off repair or a script that runs against the server installation. |
| Desktop Steam client “Verify integrity of game files” | Not confirmed for ARK dedicated-server installations. | Whether the client owns and manages the same dedicated-server app and folder. | Do not assume it applies to a separate server app. |
| Server-manager validation/update action | May wrap SteamCMD, but implementation varies. | Exact command, App ID, path, branch, and logs. | Recurring maintenance only when the manager’s target is transparent. |
The desktop Steam client’s familiar verification option is therefore not a substitute for the SteamCMD command unless the manager or documentation explicitly shows that it operates on the dedicated-server app.
One-off repair or recurring automation?
One-off repair
Use a manual SteamCMD session when you are diagnosing a failed update or suspected corruption. It gives you a direct view of the App ID, target directory, and completion result, making it easier to catch an incorrect edition or path.
Recurring script
Community instructions describe scripts that update and validate ARK files automatically. A recurring job should make the following values explicit rather than relying on defaults:
- The edition (ASE or ASA).
- The dedicated-server App ID.
- The exact install directory.
- The order: stop the server, run SteamCMD, wait for completion, then start the server.
- Where SteamCMD output is recorded for later diagnosis.
Do not schedule validation on every start merely because a script can do it. Use a recurring job when your maintenance policy requires it, and test that it does not launch a second server instance or validate an unused copy.
ASA and Linux hosting caveat
One setup guide reports that ASA has no native Linux build and that Linux hosts run the Windows binary through Proton or Wine. This is not confirmed by a primary Valve or Wildcard source in the available material. The caveat matters because a successful SteamCMD validation does not establish that a particular operating-system compatibility layer is supported. Confirm the current ASA server requirements for your host before treating validation as an operating-system fix.
Quick Recap
What validation does not change
- It does not convert ASE files into ASA files, or the reverse.
- It does not repair a wrong App ID in a control panel or script.
- It does not select the server process or alter its launch path.
- It does not guarantee that a newly released build is available on every branch at the same time.
- It does not provide a confirmed explanation for every community report of an old-version server.
Quick decision checklist
- Identify whether the installation is ASE or ASA.
- For ASE, set the dedicated-server App ID to
376030. For ASA, verify the reported dedicated-server ID2430930before proceeding. - Stop the server process and identify the directory it actually uses.
- Run
app_update 376030 validatefor ASE orapp_update 2430930 validatefor ASA. - Wait for SteamCMD to finish, then confirm that its target directory matches the startup path.
- Restart the server and check its build.
- If it is still old, investigate the App ID, path, running process, completion log, and branch rather than assuming validation has a universal fix.
