If the application is only capturing the display, switch it to windowed mode with Alt+Enter on Windows; some macOS game clients document Option-Return for the same purpose. When the game is actually frozen, use Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on macOS. A forced termination can discard unsaved settings, screenshots, or game progress, so reserve it for an application that will not close normally.
Choose the right kind of exit
“Getting out of full screen” and “killing the process” are different operations. A display-mode shortcut may return you to the desktop without closing the game. A normal quit asks the game to save and shut down cleanly. A forced termination stops the process when it is no longer responding, but it can lose data.

| What you need to do | Windows | macOS | Linux or application-specific client | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leave full-screen mode only | Alt+Enter | Option-Return in clients that document it | Depends on the desktop and application; ScummVM documents Alt-Enter | The game remains open, but its display becomes windowed |
| Close normally | Alt-F4 | Command-Q | Use the client’s documented quit shortcut; ScummVM documents Ctrl-Q on Linux/Unix | The application gets an opportunity to save and exit cleanly |
| Force the process to stop | Task Manager, or taskkill |
Force Quit Applications | No single shortcut is established by the reviewed documentation | The process is terminated without its normal shutdown sequence |

Windows: close a full-screen game without restarting
1. Try a normal close
- Click the game or press a key so it is the active window.
- Press Alt-F4.
- Wait for the game to return to the desktop. If it displays a save or quit confirmation, choose the appropriate option rather than interrupting the process again.
Alt-F4 sends the standard close command to the active window. It is the safest first attempt because the game can run its normal save and cleanup routines.

- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
2. Switch from full screen to windowed mode
If the game is responsive but you cannot see the desktop, press Alt+Enter. This commonly toggles between full-screen and windowed display. Once the window is visible, use the game’s own Quit command or close button. This shortcut changes presentation; it does not terminate the executable.
Not every game implements Alt+Enter. If nothing changes, return to the normal-close or forced-termination steps rather than repeatedly pressing the shortcut.
3. End the game in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- In the Processes view, locate the game’s executable. The name may differ from the title shown on the game’s splash screen, so identify the entry carefully.
- Select the entry and choose End task (older Windows wording may show End Process).
- Wait for the game window and its process to disappear before launching it again.
This is a forced exit. Any unsaved progress or settings that were only in memory can be lost.
4. Reach Task Manager through the security screen
A full-screen window can cover Task Manager even though Windows opened it. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open the Windows security screen, then select Task Manager and end the game process there. This route is useful when the game has captured focus or when the regular Task Manager window is hidden behind it.
5. Use Command Prompt when the interface is inaccessible
Microsoft documents ending a process by either its image name or its process ID. Open an elevated Command Prompt, then identify the process:

tasklist
Find the game’s executable name or PID in the output. To force-stop every matching process by image name, run:
taskkill /f /im game.exe
Replace game.exe with the exact image name shown by tasklist. To target one process ID and include child processes, run:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
taskkill /pid 1234 /t /f
Replace 1234 with the actual PID. In Microsoft’s syntax, /f specifies forceful termination and /t ends the specified process together with its child processes. Including /t matters when a launcher or helper process keeps running after the main game closes.
If the command reports that the image name or PID cannot be found, run tasklist again. The game may have already exited, its executable may use a different name, or the PID may have changed after a restart.
macOS: force-quit a game that will not respond
1. Quit normally with Command-Q
- Make the game the active application.
- Press Command-Q.
- Allow any save or quit confirmation to complete.
Apple notes that normal quitting gives an application the opportunity to save changes before it exits. Use this route whenever the game still responds.

2. Leave full screen when the client supports a toggle
Some macOS game clients document Option-Return as their full-screen toggle. This is application-specific, not a universal macOS command. If it works, the game remains open in a window and can then be quit normally.
3. Force Quit Applications
- Press Option-Command-Esc.
- In the Force Quit Applications window, select the unresponsive game.
- Click Force Quit, then confirm if macOS asks.
The game closes without completing its normal shutdown sequence. Treat this as a recovery action, not a replacement for saving.
4. Restart only when force quit fails
Apple recommends restarting the Mac if an application cannot be force-quit. If the Mac itself will not restart, hold the power button for up to 10 seconds as an emergency shutdown step, then power it on again. This is more disruptive than terminating one application, so use it only when the application and the system both remain inaccessible.
Linux and application-specific clients
There is no single Linux shortcut established by the reviewed support documentation that works across every desktop environment and game. Window managers, desktop shells, compatibility layers, and the application itself can all define different behavior.
Use the client’s own documented shortcuts
ScummVM documents Ctrl-Q to quit on Linux/Unix, Alt-F4 on Windows, and Alt-Enter to toggle full screen. Its shortcuts may be configurable. These commands should therefore be treated as examples for that client, not as universal Linux rules.

Separate a display problem from a frozen process
If the application still reacts to input, look for its in-game Quit command or display settings and switch to windowed mode before closing it. If it does not react, consult the application’s documented process-management method for the Linux desktop or launcher you are using. Because the available commands differ, do not assume that a Windows shortcut or a macOS force-quit sequence will apply.
Keyboard-only recovery when you cannot see the desktop
- Windows, responsive game: press Alt-F4 to request a normal close, or Alt+Enter to expose a window if the problem is only full-screen capture.
- Windows, unresponsive game: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If Task Manager is obscured, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and launch it from the security screen.
- Windows, command-line fallback: use tasklist to discover the image name or PID, then taskkill with /f; add /t when child processes also need to end.
- macOS, responsive game: press Command-Q.
- macOS, unresponsive game: press Option-Command-Esc, select the application, and choose Force Quit.
These sequences avoid relying on a mouse pointer trapped inside a full-screen game. They do not guarantee that the game has saved; keyboard access only changes how you reach the exit command.
What you can lose by force-terminating
Force termination discards work that exists only in the application’s memory. For a game, that can include progress since the last save, configuration changes, screenshots being written, or a cloud-sync operation that has not completed. NVIDIA Support specifically warns that quitting without saving can lose game progress or prevent saves from syncing to a digital store.
Apple’s guidance explains why a normal quit is preferable: the application can save changes before it exits. Therefore, if Alt-F4 or Command-Q produces a confirmation dialog, use it rather than switching immediately to Task Manager or Force Quit.
- Save at a known checkpoint before changing display modes or closing, when the game still accepts input.
- Do not repeatedly launch the game while its old process is still ending.
- After a forced exit, allow the launcher or operating system time to finish any recovery or synchronization notice before starting another session.
- If a Windows game cannot be ended through Task Manager, Steam recommends restarting Windows.
Recovery decisions and failure branches
The game is visible and responds to keys
Use the normal quit shortcut first. If you only need access to another window, use the full-screen toggle and leave the game running. Terminating a responsive application throws away the safest opportunity to save.

The game is visible but ignores its own menus
On Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and end the game process. On macOS, use Option-Command-Esc and Force Quit. On Linux, follow the client or desktop’s documented process controls because the reviewed sources establish no universal sequence.
The desktop is hidden behind the game
Windows users can use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reach the security screen and then Task Manager. macOS users can invoke Force Quit directly with Option-Command-Esc. These paths do not require first restoring a window or finding the pointer.
The main game closes but a helper remains
On Windows, identify the remaining process with tasklist. If it is a child of the game process, use taskkill /pid 1234 /t /f with the correct PID so the child tree is included. Ending only the visible game process may leave a launcher or helper active.

On macOS, Apple’s fallback is a restart; holding the power button for up to 10 seconds is reserved for a Mac that will not restart normally. On Windows, if Task Manager cannot end the game, Steam’s support guidance is to restart Windows. A restart ends more than the game, so use it only after the application-level methods fail.
A concise playbook
- Attempt the platform’s normal quit: Alt-F4 on Windows or Command-Q on macOS.
- If the game is responsive but full screen is the obstacle, try Alt+Enter on Windows or the client-specific Option-Return shortcut documented for some macOS games.
- For a Windows freeze, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or reach it through Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then choose End task.
- For a macOS freeze, open Force Quit Applications with Option-Command-Esc and choose Force Quit.
- For a Windows command-line recovery, run tasklist, then taskkill /f /im game.exe or taskkill /pid 1234 /t /f using the actual image name or PID.
- On Linux, follow the game or desktop’s documented controls; ScummVM’s documented examples are Ctrl-Q to quit and Alt-Enter for full-screen toggling.
- If application-level termination fails, restart the operating system using the platform’s normal restart procedure; use the Mac’s 10-second power-button hold only as an emergency shutdown.
The practical rule is simple: change display mode when the game is merely full screen, request a normal quit when it responds, and force-terminate only a process that will not close. That order minimizes lost progress while still giving you a way out of a frozen full-screen session.
