Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On your PS5, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Highlight your Wi‐Fi network, press the controller’s Options button, choose Wi‐Fi Frequency Bands, and change Automatic to 5 GHz. Reconnect, then run Test Internet Connection.
This works when your router broadcasts a compatible 5 GHz network and the signal is strong enough. It does not make an unavailable or weak 5 GHz signal work.

Before you start
- Your PS5 must be using Wi‐Fi rather than Ethernet.
- Your router must broadcast a 5 GHz wireless network.
- Keep the Wi‐Fi password available.
- 5 GHz Wi‐Fi is different from 5G mobile service.
Your router may show two network names, such as Home-2.4 and Home-5G, or combine both bands under one name. The PS5 band preference is especially useful with a shared network name, where the router may automatically place the console on 2.4 GHz.
How to force the PS5 to use 5 GHz
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Open Settings.
- Select Set Up Internet Connection.
- Wait for the available networks to load.
- Highlight your wireless network.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Wi‐Fi Frequency Bands.
- Choose 5 GHz instead of Automatic.
- Select the network and enter its password if prompted.
- Return to Settings > Network and select Test Internet Connection.
Sony documents the current network setup path in its PS5 support documentation. Menu wording can change slightly with future system-software updates.

If your router has separate Wi‐Fi names
Select the network explicitly labeled 5 GHz. You can still use the PS5’s Wi‐Fi Frequency Bands setting, but separate names make it easier to identify which network the console is joining.
Do not rename your networks unless necessary. Renaming them can disconnect phones, televisions, smart-home devices, and other household equipment.
How to confirm the PS5 is using 5 GHz
Run the PS5 connection test to check whether the connection is working, but do not assume every PS5 software version clearly displays the active radio band.
Recommended Free Tools
The most dependable confirmation is usually your router’s connected-device or client list. Open the router’s administration app or web interface and look for the PS5 under the 5 GHz radio. Mesh systems may show the connected node and band differently.
Also compare real-world behavior: connection stability, disconnections, download performance, and packet loss matter more than a theoretical Wi‐Fi link rate.

If “Wi‐Fi Frequency Bands” is missing
Make sure you are on the active connection setup screen, not merely viewing a saved-network list:
- Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Wait for the network scan to finish.
- Highlight the wireless network.
- Press Options.
- Look for Wi‐Fi Frequency Bands or similarly worded band controls.
The option may not appear when the PS5 is connected by Ethernet, when the router exposes only one supported band, or when no wireless network is highlighted. If it still does not appear, delete the saved Wi‐Fi network and add it again.
If 5 GHz will not connect
- Re-enter the Wi‐Fi password carefully.
- Restart the PS5.
- Restart the router.
- Forget or delete the saved network, then configure it again.
- Move the PS5 temporarily closer to the router.
- Check whether another device can connect to the router’s 5 GHz network.
- If your router uses one shared SSID, temporarily create separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names.
- Check the router’s 5 GHz channel and security settings.
- Temporarily switch the PS5 to Automatic or 2.4 GHz to confirm whether the issue is specific to 5 GHz.
Router manufacturers use different menus for channels, band steering, MAC filtering, and security. If a PS5 cannot see or join 5 GHz while other devices can, try a standard non-DFS 5 GHz channel if your router permits it and regional guidance allows it. Channel availability varies by country and router.
If the router is set to WPA3-only and the PS5 cannot connect, test a compatibility mode such as WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode if available. Do not disable wireless security entirely.
Mesh Wi‐Fi and band steering
A mesh system may continue making band-management decisions even after you select 5 GHz on the PS5. If the console keeps appearing on 2.4 GHz:

- Temporarily separate the mesh system’s 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names.
- Connect the PS5 to the explicitly labeled 5 GHz network.
- Check whether the mesh app offers client-steering or band-steering controls.
- Move the PS5 closer to the primary router or a nearby mesh node.
These controls are router-specific, so do not assume every mesh system provides them.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

| Situation | Better starting choice |
|---|---|
| PS5 near the router | 5 GHz |
| Several walls or a different floor | Automatic or 2.4 GHz |
| Crowded apartment Wi‐Fi with a strong 5 GHz signal | Usually 5 GHz |
| Frequent 5 GHz disconnections | Automatic, 2.4 GHz, or Ethernet |
| Maximum reliability for a stationary console | Ethernet |
| One combined router SSID | Set the PS5 preference to 5 GHz |
| Separate SSIDs | Connect to the 5 GHz-named network |
5 GHz can offer more throughput and less local congestion at short range, but it has shorter effective range and is more affected by walls and other obstacles than 2.4 GHz. A weak 5 GHz signal can cause packet loss or instability and may perform worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection.
Online games do not require the highest possible download speed. Stable latency and low packet loss are usually more important. 5 GHz may help with local congestion, but it cannot fix ISP congestion, poor routing to a game server, bufferbloat, a saturated upload connection, or a server-side problem.
If your goal is faster downloads
Run the PS5 connection test before and after changing bands, then compare actual download behavior under similar conditions. Results depend on the Internet plan, router, distance, interference, and other active devices. A faster displayed link rate does not guarantee faster Internet downloads.
When Ethernet is the better solution
If the PS5 stays near the router, Ethernet is usually more reliable than troubleshooting wireless band selection. Sony recommends a wired Cat 5e-or-better connection when maximum network performance is important. If direct cabling is impractical, a properly placed access point, mesh node, MoCA adapter, or powerline system may improve coverage, but each depends on the home’s layout and wiring.
Do not buy a new router merely to select 5 GHz: the PS5 already includes that control. Consider a new router or mesh system only when the existing equipment has poor coverage or lacks useful controls for channels, SSIDs, security, or band steering.
