Choose the handheld that will use the SSD most often before formatting it. Valve documents an in-menu format process for Steam Deck microSD cards, while ASUS’s ROG Ally guide recommends NTFS for an additional storage volume in its SD-card setup. Neither guide establishes a single external-SSD format that works as an interchangeable Steam game library on both SteamOS and Windows. Back up the drive before formatting: the process erases its data.
First, decide whether the drive is for one handheld or both
A portable USB-C SSD is the relevant kind of external drive, but its setup is not the same as formatting a microSD card inside either handheld. The official instructions cited here cover Steam Deck’s microSD format menu and ASUS’s ROG Ally SD-card game-installation workflow. They do not provide a complete USB SSD formatting procedure for either device.
- Steam Deck only: Use the storage-management guidance below, but do not treat the microSD formatting menu as an external-SSD formatter.
- ROG Ally only: ASUS’s guide provides an NTFS and launcher-location workflow for additional storage, in the context of an SD card.
- Carrying the SSD between both: Do not assume that choosing one file system will make a Steam library seamlessly usable on both. The official guidance does not establish a straightforward shared-library setup.
Before formatting: protect the files already on the SSD
Formatting erases data on the selected volume, as ASUS warns in its storage guide. Copy anything you need to keep somewhere else and confirm you have selected the intended drive before proceeding. A portable SSD may contain more than a game library, so check for personal files as well.
Steam Deck: what Valve documents
Steam Deck microSD cards
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says: “Steam Deck microSD cards use ext4 with casefolding – Steam Deck formats SD cards to the proper format.” For a microSD card—not an external SSD—the format path in Valve’s Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide is Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.

Connected storage and an external SSD
Valve says connected storage can be managed at Steam > Settings > Storage. That is useful for managing storage Steam recognizes, but it is not an end-to-end instruction to format an external USB drive or make it a game library. The SD-card menu above is specifically for SD cards; do not assume it will format an SSD or that plugging in an SSD automatically configures it as a library.
ROG Ally: ASUS’s NTFS and game-location guidance
ASUS’s How to Install Games to an SD Card on your ROG Ally or ROG Xbox Ally, published October 15, 2025, recommends formatting the additional volume as NTFS. Its examples concern an SD card, so apply them as ASUS’s documented additional-storage workflow—not as a complete external-SSD tutorial.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Back up any files on the selected volume; formatting erases its data.
- Format the additional volume as NTFS, following the Windows formatting process shown in ASUS’s guide.
- In Steam, add the drive or a folder on it as a Steam Library Folder through Steam’s storage settings.
- In other launchers, select the drive or folder as the install location where the launcher offers that option.
ASUS’s ROG Ally Series Frequently Asked Questions confirms the Ally has a UHS-II or backward-compatible microSD reader and supports installing games on that storage. That describes microSD support, not a universal external-SSD setup.

The official sources establish ext4 with casefolding for Steam Deck microSD cards and an NTFS recommendation in ASUS’s ROG Ally additional-storage guide. They do not establish that exFAT, NTFS, or ext4 is a guaranteed shared format for an interchangeable Steam library across SteamOS and Windows. File-system compatibility alone would not demonstrate that Steam mounts the drive as expected, has suitable permissions, or can use the same library configuration on both systems.

If you need one SSD for both handhelds, verify the exact drive format, how each operating system mounts it, permissions, and Steam library behavior before moving your game collection. If you want the clearest documented route, configure the storage for the handheld and launcher that will use it most, rather than relying on a promise of plug-and-play portability.
