Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the SD Association’s SD Card Formatter on a computer, select Overwrite format, and then put the card back in the console. Formatting erases the card, so back up anything you want to keep first. Check the card type before you begin: original 3DS-family systems use full-size SD cards, while New 3DS-family systems use microSD cards.
Check that the card matches your 3DS
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance distinguishes the systems by both card size and capacity. It does not consider SDXC or microSDXC cards compatible, even if a computer can format one.
| Console models | Card type | Supported capacity range |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS | SD or SDHC | SD up to 2 GB; SDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB |
| New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL | microSD or microSDHC | microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB |
These are Nintendo’s stated compatibility limits; Nintendo also cautions that it cannot guarantee cards other than the one supplied with a system. See Nintendo’s SD card compatibility guidance before choosing a replacement.
Back up or transfer files before formatting
Formatting removes information from the card. The SD Association manual specifically says that Overwrite format erases the user data area. Copy files you need to a computer or another safe location first.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you are moving data to a replacement card, copy the entire Nintendo 3DS folder without renaming, rearranging, or merging its contents. Keep the original card unchanged until the new card is installed and its data is confirmed. Nintendo’s SD card transfer instructions explain the process.
Format the card with the SD Association tool
- Turn off the 3DS. Power the console off before removing or inserting its SD or microSD card.
- Connect the card to a computer. Use a computer’s SD slot or a compatible USB card reader. For a microSD card, use a reader or adapter that supports it.
- Open the SD Association’s SD Card Formatter. In its drive list, identify the correct card carefully; choosing another drive could erase the wrong storage device.
- Select Overwrite format. Nintendo’s instruction is: “Please select Overwrite format when formatting the card.” The SD Association manual notes that Overwrite can take considerably longer than Quick format because it writes over the user data area.
- Start formatting and wait for it to finish. Do not remove the card or reader while the operation is running.
- Safely eject the card and return it to the console. Follow the placement instructions for your model. Nintendo’s card insertion guidance covers SD and microSD placement.
Nintendo directs users to its recommended computer tool for SD-card formatting; this is separate from formatting a 3DS’s system memory. The tool is available from the SD Association’s SD Card Formatter page.

If the formatter cannot see or write to the card
- The card does not appear in the drive list: Reinsert it, refresh the drive list, and check that the slot, reader, or adapter supports the card type. The SD Association manual notes that some systems may need drivers or file-system support for certain card types.
- The formatter reports write protection: On a full-size SD card, move its write-protect switch to the unlocked, upward position. If a microSD card is in an adapter, check the adapter’s switch.
- Formatting is taking a long time: Overwrite format may take longer depending on card size and speed. Let it finish rather than unplugging the card or reader.
- The 3DS does not recognize transferred data: Confirm that you copied the complete Nintendo 3DS folder and preserved its structure. Do not erase the original card until the replacement is verified.
- The card is labeled SDXC or microSDXC: The formatter may be able to format it, but Nintendo does not consider that card type compatible with these consoles. Use an SDHC or microSDHC card within the stated capacity range instead.
