What Talk Studio Stream Forwarding does
Streamlabs describes this feature as Stream Forwarding, also known as RTMP-In. Talk Studio provides the ingest server URL and stream key; your encoder produces and sends the broadcast. This is useful when you need an external tool for scenes, layouts, camera sources, or a Zoom call rather than producing the broadcast entirely inside Talk Studio.
Streamlabs lists Zoom calls, custom layouts or scenes, more than nine people on screen, and multiple camera sources as use cases. Its forwarding guide says LinkedIn and Twitter are not supported in this workflow. Check the destination list in your account before planning a broadcast, since supported destinations and menus can change. The instructions below follow Streamlabs’ guide, updated April 25, 2025.
Forward a stream using Streamlabs Desktop
- Open forwarding settings. Sign in to Talk Studio and go to Account Settings > Stream Forwarding.
- Select destinations. Choose the linked destination or destinations for this broadcast. LinkedIn and Twitter are not supported for forwarding according to Streamlabs’ guide.
- Set broadcast details. Enter the stream title and description, then save. Do this before configuring the encoder so the broadcast is set up in Talk Studio.
- Open the custom server settings in Streamlabs Desktop. Select the settings gear, then go to Stream > Stream Type > Custom Streaming Server.
- Copy both connection values from Talk Studio. Paste the Talk Studio Ingest Server URL into the server field and its Stream key into the key field. Save the settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in screenshots.
- Start the broadcast from the encoder. Confirm the intended Talk Studio destinations and your encoder settings, then select Go Live in Streamlabs Desktop.
The signal starts at the encoder, not by pressing Go Live inside Talk Studio. If you use OBS, Zoom, or another encoder, find its custom RTMP or streaming-server settings and enter the same Talk Studio URL and key; menu names differ by application.

Check your upload connection and resolution
Streamlabs’ Talk Studio Getting Started guide, retrieved October 3, 2026, calls for at least 5 Mbps upload and recommends a stable connection, preferably Ethernet. Its resolution figures are guidance from that guide, not independent benchmarks:

These are upload speeds, not download speeds. If several people or devices share the connection, leave headroom rather than assuming the full measured upload is available to the stream. Ethernet is preferred, not mandatory; a suitable stable wired connection already in place is enough.

Choose between Talk Studio and an external encoder
The key decision is where you need to build the broadcast and whether you need a Talk Studio-supported destination:

Troubleshoot common forwarding problems
- The broadcast does not reach the intended destination: Reopen Account Settings > Stream Forwarding and verify that the correct linked destination is selected and the stream details were saved. LinkedIn and Twitter are not supported by this forwarding workflow.
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the server field contains the Talk Studio Ingest Server URL and the key field contains the matching stream key. Remove accidental spaces, save again, and avoid reusing an old or mistyped key.
- The stream is unstable or drops: Check upload capacity against the resolution guidance above, reduce competing network traffic, and use Ethernet if available. A speed test measures conditions at that moment, so check again near broadcast time if the connection varies.
- You cannot find the setting in another encoder: Look for custom RTMP, custom server, or streaming-service settings; labels and locations vary. Use Talk Studio’s URL and key in the corresponding fields rather than selecting an unrelated preset.
- Your layout or participants do not appear as expected: Confirm the scenes, sources, cameras, and call participants in the external encoder before going live. In a forwarding workflow, that encoder is producing the signal sent to Talk Studio.
