The safest way to display a valuable video-game poster is often to keep the original in archival storage and hang a high-quality reproduction. Paper and printing inks suffer cumulative, irreversible light damage. If you display the original, use conservation-quality matting, a spacer, stable backing, UV-filtering glazing, low light and a limited display period. Never let the poster touch the glazing or attach it with ordinary tape or glue.

The recommendations below apply to works on paper generally. A poster’s paper, inks, size, previous treatment and current condition can change the right method, so valuable, brittle, damaged or uncertain pieces should be assessed by a paper conservator before framing or repair.

Decide whether the original should be on the wall

Framing protects a poster from handling, dust and accidental contact, but it cannot make paper permanent. Light exposure remains the central risk. The Library of Congress states: “Long-term/permanent display of paper-based materials is not recommended because light exposure causes permanent damage that manifests in fading, yellowing/discoloration, embrittlement, and other irreversible changes.”

That warning applies even when a frame has UV-filtering glazing. Ultraviolet filtering reduces one part of the exposure; visible light can still fade inks and alter paper. Damage accumulates over the total time the poster is illuminated, and faded color cannot be returned to its former intensity.

Use the original for short, controlled displays

Display the original when its condition is stable, the room can be kept away from direct sun and intense illumination, and you can rotate it out of the frame. Record when it went on display and plan periods in storage rather than leaving it illuminated indefinitely. This is a risk-management choice, not a guarantee of a particular lifespan.

Use a reproduction for continuous viewing

A well-made facsimile lets you enjoy the image while the collectible remains in the dark. Store the original in an acid-free folder or box and reserve the wall for the copy, especially when the original is rare, already faded, printed on fragile stock or has uncertain inks. General conservation estimates for paper show that fading time varies with color sensitivity and light level; they are not a prediction for any particular video-game poster.

Build a conservation-minded frame package

A frame is a system of layers. The poster should be supported, separated from the glazing and enclosed in materials that will not introduce harmful chemicals. A decorative frame alone does not meet those requirements.

Choose the mat board

  • Use mat board made from 100% cotton rag or chemically purified, lignin-free wood pulp.
  • Choose pH-neutral or slightly alkaline board, at least 4-ply, as recommended by the Library of Congress.
  • Ensure the board is clean, rigid and large enough to support the poster and provide a window or border around it.
  • Avoid ordinary acidic cardboard, wood-pulp papers with unknown processing and materials that smell strongly of chemicals.

The mat is not merely decorative. It keeps the printed surface away from the glazing, provides a stable support plane and creates a buffer around the edges.

Keep the poster off the glazing

Use a window mat or archival spacers so there is an air gap between the poster and glass or acrylic. The poster must not be pressed against the glazing: temperature and humidity changes can cause sticking, abrasion, tide lines or transferred media. The Library of Congress and National Archives both specify sufficient separation, and the National Archives recommends spacers or a window mat for this purpose.

Select glazing for the size and handling conditions

UV-filtering glass or acrylic is appropriate where it suits the frame and room. UV-filtering acrylic is lighter and less brittle than glass, which can simplify handling and reduce breakage risk. Acrylic scratches more easily and can bow in large frames, so use a product and thickness appropriate to the dimensions and support it correctly. Glass may be preferable where scratch resistance and rigidity matter, provided its UV performance is documented.

“UV-protective” does not mean light-proof. Keep the finished frame away from direct sunlight, high-intensity lamps and windows that receive sun. No glazing can compensate for excessive exposure time.

Use a stable backing and enclosure

The backing should be rigid, clean and chemically stable, with no exposed wood, ordinary corrugated cardboard or unknown adhesive contacting the poster. Have the framer seal the assembly against dust without trapping a damp poster or creating pressure on its edges. Oversize posters need especially careful support because their own weight can cause sagging when moved or hung.

Attach the poster without damaging it

Ordinary tape and glue can stain paper, pull fibers, become brittle or make future removal destructive. The Library of Congress specifically warns against self-stick tape, including products sold as “archival.” Do not place adhesive directly on the printed sheet.

Preferred reversible methods

  • Non-adhesive photo corners: Paper corners hold the poster without sticking to it. They must be sized and positioned so the sheet can expand and contract without being pinched.
  • Conservation hinges: A qualified framer or conservator can use Japanese paper hinges with wheat-starch paste or methyl cellulose, methods described by the National Archives. The hinge is attached in a controlled location and can be removed more safely than pressure-sensitive tape.
  • Professional mounting decisions: If the poster is brittle, torn, heavily rolled, unusually large or printed with friable media, do not experiment with a mounting method. Have the sheet examined first.

Do not laminate, dry-mount, spray-mount, glue to a board or use household double-sided tape. These treatments can be difficult or impossible to reverse and may permanently change the paper.

Control light, location and display time

Light damage is cumulative. The practical controls are intensity, duration and distance from sources, not just UV filtering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a low-risk wall

  • Keep the frame out of direct sunlight and away from windows with strong daylight.
  • Do not place it under intense spotlights, high-output display lighting or fixtures that heat the frame.
  • Prefer a cooler, evenly lit interior wall where illumination can be reduced when the room is unused.
  • Leave enough clearance for the frame to hang securely without rubbing a wall, radiator or other heat source.

Limit the exposure period

Rotate the original with a reproduction or another poster. Lowering illumination and shortening the time on display generally provides more benefit than UV filtering alone. Keep a simple display log so you know how long the paper has been exposed; this is particularly useful for a collection that is shown seasonally or for events.

Watch for early warning signs

Compare the poster with a neutral-light photograph or an unexposed edge when possible. Watch for fading, yellowing, localized discoloration, waviness, embrittlement, cockling, mold or a surface that begins to adhere to the glazing. If any sign appears, remove the frame from display and seek advice rather than increasing pressure or trying to clean it.

Handle and move the poster safely

Every handling event is an opportunity for a tear, crease or transfer of dirt. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises handling paper as little as possible and supporting it with stiff paper or mat board when lifting.

  1. Clear a large, clean, dry work surface before opening a frame or box.
  2. Wash and dry your hands; remove rings, watches and sharp jewelry that could catch the sheet.
  3. Support the entire poster with both hands or a rigid support. Never lift a large sheet by one corner or edge.
  4. Keep food, drinks, solvents, pens and adhesive products away from the work area.
  5. Move the poster flat when its condition allows. If it is already tightly rolled, do not force it flat; ask a conservator about safe handling.
  6. Photograph the front, back, edges and any existing damage before changing its storage or frame.

For a framed poster, carry the frame vertically with two people when its size or weight makes flexing likely. Do not stack heavy objects on an unframed sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store an unframed original correctly

Storage is the preservation environment, not an afterthought. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends acid-free folders and boxes for unframed works. Select a container that supports the poster without forcing folds or a tight roll.

Use protective enclosures

  • Place the poster in an acid-free folder or between suitable archival sheets before putting it in a box.
  • Use a rigid, appropriately sized box that keeps the paper flat and prevents edge crushing.
  • Separate posters with protective interleaving when their surfaces could rub or transfer media.
  • Label the enclosure rather than writing on the poster or pressing a label onto the printed surface.

Avoid unstable environments

Do not store collectibles in attics, basements, garages or near heaters. Heat and unstable humidity can accelerate deterioration. High relative humidity can cause swelling, waviness, chemical degradation and mold. Choose an interior storage area with stable conditions and avoid repeated moves between very different environments.

Keep the box off a floor that could flood and away from pipes, exterior walls and direct light. Check periodically for dampness, odor, insects, distortion or new stains without repeatedly handling the poster.

Know when not to clean, flatten or repair it yourself

Surface dirt, old tape, pressure-sensitive adhesive, water staining, tears and a tight curl may look like routine defects, but treatment can damage inks and fibers. Cleaning, humidification, flattening and repair should not be attempted on a valuable or unexamined poster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact a paper conservator when:

  • The poster is particularly valuable, rare or historically important.
  • Damage is progressing, including active tears, flaking ink, mold, embrittlement or severe discoloration.
  • The sheet has old tape, glue, labels, previous lining or an unknown coating.
  • You need flattening, stain reduction, tear repair, deacidification or removal from a frame that may be holding it under pressure.
  • The ink is uncertain, powdery, water-sensitive or visibly lifting.

A conservator can examine paper and media, document condition, explain risks and propose a treatment that is as reversible as practical. The Library of Congress recommends professional help for particularly valuable, frequently handled or complicated items and cautions that faded ink cannot be restored to its original intensity.

Compare the practical choices

Decision Lower-risk choice Higher-risk alternative Why it matters
What stays on the wall? Display a reproduction; store the original Leave the original permanently illuminated Light damage is irreversible and cumulative.

A step-by-step framing workflow

  1. Assess the object. Note size, paper type if known, tears, stains, flaking, old repairs, odors and any previous frame. Stop if the sheet is brittle, moldy or actively deteriorating.
  2. Choose display or storage. For a rare or highly valuable original, select a reproduction for the wall and prepare archival storage for the original.
  3. Specify materials in writing. Ask for 100% cotton-rag or purified lignin-free mat board, pH-neutral or slightly alkaline, at least 4-ply; stable backing; UV-filtering glazing; and a window mat or spacer.
  4. Approve the attachment method. Request non-adhesive photo corners or conservation hinges. Reject self-stick tape and direct adhesive contact.
  5. Confirm clearance. Verify that no part of the poster touches the glazing and that the frame does not compress its edges.
  6. Install in a controlled location. Keep it out of direct sun and intense light, away from heat and damp areas, and use secure hardware suitable for the frame’s weight.
  7. Record and rotate. Photograph the framed state, note the installation date and remove the original for storage when the planned display period ends.

What the conservation guidance does—and does not—promise

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Canadian Conservation Institute provide guidance for paper objects, not laboratory tests on a particular video-game poster or its printing process. Their recommendations establish sensible risk reduction: stable materials, separation from glazing, lower light, limited exposure, careful handling and appropriate storage. They do not establish a guaranteed number of years, a universal humidity target or a treatment that is safe for every ink and paper.

The International Vintage Poster Dealers Association also advises acid-free or acid-neutral materials, UV-protective glazing and a mat or spacer. That is useful poster-industry advice, while the institutional conservation guidance remains the stronger basis for preservation decisions. No available source supplies a poster-specific fading statistic.

Quick inspection checklist

  • Is the original being displayed, or would a reproduction meet the viewing goal?
  • Is the wall free of direct sun and intense lighting?
  • Are the mat and backing chemically stable and at least 4-ply where specified?
  • Is there a window mat or spacer preventing contact with the glazing?
  • Is the glazing UV-filtering, with its limitations understood?
  • Is the poster held by photo corners or conservation hinges rather than ordinary or self-stick tape?
  • Can the frame be moved without flexing the poster?
  • Is the storage enclosure acid-free and located away from heat, attics, basements and humidity swings?
  • Has a paper conservator examined valuable, damaged, brittle or uncertain material?
