How to Free Up Nintendo Switch Storage Before Installing Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A requires 6.0 GB on a Nintendo Switch and 11.2 GB on a Nintendo Switch 2, according to the Nintendo eShop listing accessed October 16, 2026. Nintendo warns that the actual installation may require more or less free space, so check the number shown for your console and compare it with the free-space figures in System Settings > Data Management.

If you are short on space, archive an infrequently used download first. Archiving removes the installed software but keeps its HOME Menu icon and save data. Deleting software also leaves save data intact, but removes the icon. If the internal library still will not fit, use a compatible microSD card for downloadable software, updates and DLC; save data remains in system memory.

How much storage does Pokémon Legends: Z-A need?

The required space depends on which Nintendo console you are using. Nintendo’s eShop listing gives these figures:

Console Listed required space Qualification
Nintendo Switch 6.0 GB Nintendo eShop listing accessed October 16, 2026
Nintendo Switch 2 11.2 GB Nintendo eShop listing accessed October 16, 2026

These are the figures Nintendo publishes for the two console families, not a promise that every installation will consume exactly that amount. The eShop warns that the space needed may be more or less than the displayed figure. Use the requirement shown on your own console’s eShop page or install prompt as the final check immediately before downloading.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition | Officially Licensed for Nintendo Switch, UHS-I, Up to 100MB/s Read Speeds
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

Do not assume that a Switch 2 requirement applies to an original Switch-family console, or vice versa. The listings are different, and the storage expansion standard is also different: Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express compatibility, so verify that a card is suitable for your model before buying or inserting it.

Check your model and available space first

Start with two numbers: the required space for the game and the free space reported by the console. Nintendo says the eShop shows required space before purchase. The console’s storage figures are available under System Settings > Data Management.

  1. Open the Nintendo eShop listing for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, or proceed to the game’s installation prompt if you already own it.
  2. Note the required-space figure shown for your console. The published reference points are 6.0 GB on Nintendo Switch and 11.2 GB on Nintendo Switch 2.
  3. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  4. Select Data Management and review the free-space figures shown for the console’s internal storage and any inserted microSD card.
  5. Compare the available space with the game’s requirement. Leave room for the console’s warning that the final amount may differ from the listing.

This check prevents a common mistake: freeing exactly the headline number and discovering that the install prompt still cannot proceed. If the available figure is below the requirement, use the least disruptive cleanup option first.

Archive a game when you may want to replay it

Archiving is the safest first move for downloaded games you expect to return to. It removes the installed software files to free storage, while the game’s icon remains on the HOME Menu. You can redownload the title later. Nintendo states that archiving does not affect the game’s save data.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Archive one title

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Manage Software.
  4. Select the game that is using space.
  5. Choose Archive Software and confirm.

The title’s HOME Menu icon is retained as a reminder that the software is not currently installed. Selecting that icon later lets you redownload the game, provided you use the Nintendo Account that purchased it.

Archive several titles with Quick Archive

When several large downloads are competing for space, use Quick Archive in Data Management. It lets you select multiple software titles in one pass instead of opening each title’s management screen individually. Choose only games you are comfortable removing from local storage; their save data is not erased by this operation, but the software will need to be downloaded again before playing.

Delete software when you do not need its icon

Delete Software also removes the installed game files and frees software storage. The difference is visible on the HOME Menu: deleting removes the title’s icon, while archiving leaves it in place. Both options preserve save data according to Nintendo Support.

Use Delete Software

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Go to Data Management > Manage Software.
  3. Choose the title you no longer want installed.
  4. Select Delete Software and confirm the choice.

If you later want the game again, redownload it with the Nintendo Account that bought it. Removing the icon does not transfer ownership or remove the purchase from that account.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Do not select Delete Save Data by mistake

Data Management presents a separate Delete Save Data function. Leave that option untouched unless you deliberately intend to erase progress. Nintendo says save data is stored in the console’s system memory and is unaffected by either archiving or deleting software. A redownloaded game can therefore use the existing save data when you resume play.

Action Installed software HOME Menu icon Save data
Archive Software Removed Kept Kept in system memory
Delete Software Removed Removed Kept in system memory
Delete Save Data Not the same as either cleanup option Not the same as either cleanup option Erased when confirmed

Move future downloads to a microSD card

A compatible microSD card expands the place available for downloadable software. Nintendo says the card can store downloaded software, software updates, downloadable content and captures. When a card is inserted, downloads default to it.

The card does not replace the console’s system memory for everything. Save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. Treat the card as a location for software and related downloadable files, not as a backup destination for game progress.

Insert the card before installing or redownloading

  1. Obtain a microSD card compatible with your console model.
  2. If you use Nintendo Switch 2, verify that the card meets the console’s microSD Express requirement.
  3. Insert the card into the console according to the console’s hardware instructions.
  4. Return to System Settings > Data Management and confirm that the card is recognized and has available space.
  5. Start the Pokémon Legends: Z-A download or redownload. With the card inserted, Nintendo says downloads default to it.

If the game is already installed in internal memory, the storage-management screens are the place to check which software occupies space and decide what to archive or delete. The key distinction is that software can reside on the microSD card, while save data continues to reside in system memory.

Internal memory and microSD storage: what belongs where?

Data type Console system memory microSD card

Downloaded software Can be stored here Can be stored here
Software updates Can be stored here Can be stored here
Downloadable content Can be stored here Can be stored here
Captures Storage location depends on the console’s data-management setup Nintendo identifies microSD as a supported location

This division explains why archiving a large game can recover enough room for a new installation without putting your progress at risk. It also explains why buying a larger card does not create a way to copy saves away from the console’s system memory.

A practical cleanup sequence before installing

Use this sequence when you want the smallest number of decisions and the lowest risk of removing something permanently.

  1. Confirm the console model. Use the Nintendo Switch figure or the Nintendo Switch 2 figure as an initial reference, then rely on the requirement shown in your own eShop listing or install prompt.
  2. Measure free space. Open System Settings > Data Management and note the available internal and microSD storage.
  3. Archive one or two large, infrequently played downloads. This frees software space while retaining their HOME Menu icons and save data.
  4. Use Quick Archive if a group of titles is needed. Select several games from the Quick Archive screen rather than repeating the single-title process.
  5. Delete only titles whose icons you do not need. Delete Software removes the icon but leaves saves in system memory.
  6. Check the correct command before confirming. Do not substitute Delete Save Data for Archive Software or Delete Software.
  7. Recheck the free-space figures. Confirm that the available amount now exceeds the game’s displayed requirement.
  8. Install or redownload Pokémon Legends: Z-A. If a compatible microSD card is inserted, Nintendo says the download defaults to that card.
  9. Keep the Nintendo Account detail in mind. A deleted download can be obtained again with the Nintendo Account that purchased it.

Archive versus delete: which should you choose?

The choice is about organization, not save-data safety. Both operations remove installed software and preserve progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choose When it fits What changes
Archive Software You expect to replay the title and want a visible reminder on the HOME Menu. Software files are removed; icon and save data remain.
Delete Software You do not want the title listed on the HOME Menu while it is uninstalled. Software files and icon are removed; save data remains.

Neither option is a substitute for deleting save data. If preserving progress is the goal, stop at Archive Software or Delete Software and do not enter the separate save-data command.

Common problems and the appropriate fix

The free-space figure is still too low

Archive another large download, or use Quick Archive to select several titles. If the internal library remains too full, insert a compatible microSD card and verify its available space under Data Management before starting the download.

The installation prompt asks for a different amount

Use the figure shown on the console’s current eShop listing or installation prompt. Nintendo’s published 6.0 GB and 11.2 GB values are listing figures, and Nintendo warns that the final space requirement may be more or less.

A game disappeared from the HOME Menu

That is consistent with Delete Software, which removes the icon. Redownload the title with the Nintendo Account that purchased it. If you want a visible reminder next time, use Archive Software instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are worried that archiving erased progress

Nintendo states that save data is stored in system memory and is unaffected by archiving or deleting software. Check that you used one of those software commands rather than Delete Save Data.

The microSD card does not solve the problem

Confirm that the card is compatible with the console model and that the console recognizes it in System Settings > Data Management. For Nintendo Switch 2, specifically verify microSD Express compatibility. Also remember that a card stores software, updates and DLC; it cannot hold copied save data.

You are considering a USB hard drive

Do not plan the installation around one. Nintendo Support states that external USB hard drives are not currently supported for this purpose.

What to remember about saves, cards and redownloads

  • Archiving and deleting software are storage-management actions, not save-data deletion actions.
  • Save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card.
  • A microSD card is for downloadable software, updates, DLC and supported captures.
  • With a card inserted, Nintendo says downloads default to it.
  • Deleting a purchased download does not remove the purchase; redownload it with the Nintendo Account that bought it.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 requires attention to microSD Express compatibility.
  • External USB hard drives are not currently supported.

Final installation check

Before pressing the download button, confirm three things: the console model, the required-space figure shown by the current eShop listing or install prompt, and the available space reported in Data Management. If the numbers do not line up, archive or delete software first, keeping the separate Delete Save Data command untouched. If internal storage remains insufficient, use a compatible microSD card—microSD Express for Nintendo Switch 2—and let the console direct the download to it.
