How to free up storage before downloading a large game

The safest way to make room for a large game is to work backward from the installation destination: check the free space on that drive or console, confirm the game’s current install requirement, review what is using storage, remove or move only items you recognize, and check the same destination again. Freeing space on another drive will not help if the launcher is installing to a nearly full one.

  1. Identify the drive, console storage, or USB location selected for the installation.
  2. Read the size requirement shown by the game’s current store page or launcher.
  3. Use the platform’s built-in storage recommendations before deleting personal files.
  4. Uninstall unused games or apps, or move wanted files and eligible game installations elsewhere.
  5. Empty the Recycle Bin on Windows when you are certain the deleted files are no longer needed.
  6. Recheck free space at the installation destination, then start the download.

Start with the installation destination

A game download can fail even when another disk has plenty of room. On a PC, the destination may be an internal system drive, a second internal drive, an external drive, or a different Steam library. On a PS5, it may be console storage or a compatible USB extended-storage device. Find the selected destination before cleaning anything.

Open the game’s store listing or launcher and note the installation requirement currently shown there. Treat that figure as the authoritative starting point for this download. A displayed download size is not a universal promise about the total space needed during installation or a later update, and the official Windows, Steam, and PlayStation guidance does not establish one extra-space buffer that applies to every game. Do not delete files merely to meet an invented fixed margin.

Check the destination, not just the computer

  • On Windows, open the storage view for the drive where the launcher will install the game. If your launcher has multiple library locations, verify the selected one.
  • On PS5, check both Console Storage and any USB extended storage location you intend to use.
  • If you are unsure, begin the install far enough to see the destination prompt, then cancel before any deletion and record the selected location.

Write down the available-space figure before cleaning. It gives you a reliable before-and-after check and prevents a successful cleanup on the wrong disk.

Use Windows storage tools before deleting personal files

Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Menu names can vary slightly by release, but the built-in Storage page is the safest first stop because it groups removable content and shows how much space selected items occupy.

Open Cleanup recommendations in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Storage.
  3. Select Cleanup recommendations.
  4. Review each category before selecting anything. Windows can show temporary files, large or unused files, files synced to the cloud, and unused apps.
  5. Select only items you recognize and intend to remove, then choose the cleanup command shown by Windows.

The page reports the space associated with the selections. That estimate is useful, but it is not a reason to select every category automatically. A cloud-synced file may still be important, and an unused app may contain data you want to keep. Open the category, inspect the file names or application names, and make the decision item by item.

Use Storage Sense for routine cleanup

Windows Storage Sense can remove recognized temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin according to its settings. Open Settings > System > Storage and review Storage Sense before running it. On Windows 10, the equivalent controls are also under the Storage settings, although labels and placement can differ by release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check what Storage Sense is configured to remove and when it runs. If you need space immediately, use the available run-now option after reviewing those choices. Storage Sense is appropriate for routine temporary data; it should not replace your inspection of personal folders, project files, recordings, or cloud content.

What the Windows recommendations mean

Category What it can contain Review before removing
Temporary files Short-lived system or application data Keep anything an application identifies as needed for an unfinished task or update.
Large or unused files Files taking substantial space that Windows has identified for review Open the location and confirm the file is not a backup, work file, recording, or other item you still need.
Files synced to the cloud Local copies of files also stored by a cloud-sync service Confirm the cloud copy is complete and understand whether making a file online-only changes how you access it.
Unused apps Installed applications Windows considers unused Check the app name, its settings, and any data it stores before uninstalling.

Find large personal files with File Explorer

Cleanup recommendations may not identify every large download or video. File Explorer lets you inspect the folders that commonly grow fastest, especially Downloads, Videos, Pictures, and folders containing screen captures or game recordings.

  1. Open File Explorer and select the drive that will receive the game.
  2. Open a likely folder, such as Downloads.
  3. Change the view to show file details and sort by Size so the largest items appear first.
  4. Open or preview a file when necessary. Do not delete an item solely because its extension or name looks unfamiliar.
  5. For files you want to keep, move them to an external drive or SD card with enough capacity and a connection your computer supports.
  6. For files you no longer need, delete them and then empty the Recycle Bin after your review.

Moving a file is different from creating a second copy. Confirm that the transfer completed before deleting the original. For irreplaceable photos, recordings, schoolwork, or project files, keep a second backup rather than relying on a single external device.

Why the Recycle Bin matters

Deleting a file in File Explorer usually sends it to the Recycle Bin instead of immediately returning all of its space to the drive. After checking its contents, right-click the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin. This permanently removes those files from the normal Windows recovery path, so do it only after you are certain nothing in it is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall an unused game or app

If a game or application is taking more space than your personal files, uninstall one you no longer use through Windows’ installed-app controls. Review the name and publisher, and check whether the program contains saves, mods, screenshots, or configuration files you want to retain. Uninstalling the program is targeted and usually reversible through a later reinstall, but any separate user data may follow different rules.

Be cautious with a previous Windows installation

Windows may list a previous installation among cleanup choices after an upgrade. Microsoft notes that deleting it can remove the ability to roll back to the previous Windows version. Do not select that category simply because it is large; first decide whether the rollback option still matters to you. If you remove it, treat the decision as permanent for that rollback path.

Move a Steam installation instead of uninstalling it

Steam supports library folders on multiple hard drives and can move eligible game installations to another location. This is useful when one drive is full but another suitable drive has room, because you keep the installed game rather than downloading it again.

  1. Connect and verify the destination drive. Make sure it remains available with the same access permissions whenever you play.
  2. Open Steam’s settings and go to the storage or library-management view. Steam’s labels can change as the client is updated.
  3. Add or select the library folder on the drive with available space.
  4. In the list of installed games, select the game you want to relocate and choose the move option.
  5. Confirm the destination and wait for Steam to finish transferring the files before disconnecting either drive.
  6. Return to the storage view and verify that the game’s library location has changed.

The move changes where the existing installation is stored; it does not create a general free-space allowance for future patches. Check the game’s current requirement again before downloading a different title or a large update. Keep the destination drive connected and mounted when Steam needs to verify or launch the game.

When moving is better than uninstalling

  • Choose moving when you have another reliable drive and want to avoid a new download.
  • Choose uninstalling when the game is no longer wanted or the alternate drive is too slow, unreliable, or unavailable.
  • Move personal files separately if you need to reclaim space on the system drive itself; a Steam move helps only when the full drive is the one being used for the game or related data.

Manage storage on a PlayStation 5

PlayStation’s storage-management guidance covers Console Storage, USB extended storage, and saved-data handling. The exact choices can vary with system software, but the principle is the same: inspect the location where the game will be installed, then remove or move only what you understand.

Review Console Storage and Games and Apps

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Choose Storage, then review Console Storage.
  3. Open the category for games and applications to see which installations consume the most space.
  4. Select a game or application you no longer need and use the available delete or move command.
  5. Return to the storage summary and confirm the free-space figure has increased.

Deleting a purchased game or application does not remove your entitlement. PlayStation says deleted games and applications can be downloaded again from your game library. You will need to download the game again, however, so deleting it is a space-saving choice rather than a way to avoid future download time.

Keep saved data separate in your decision

Game installations and saved data are separate storage concerns. Before deleting an application, check the saved-data section and decide whether the local saves should remain. If you use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, PlayStation documents moving saved data with that service; verify that the save has synchronized before relying on the cloud copy. Do not assume that deleting an application automatically removes every save, or that every save is protected in the same way.

Use USB extended storage carefully

A compatible USB extended-storage device can provide another place for supported game installations or personal data, depending on the console’s rules and the game’s requirements. Connect the device, open the PS5 storage settings, and follow the move or format instructions shown there. Formatting destroys existing content on that device, so copy anything important elsewhere first.

Check compatibility, connection type, capacity, and the console’s current requirements before buying or reusing a drive. Do not assume that every external drive can run every PS5 game directly; some games or functions may require console storage. The on-screen storage menu is the authority for what your particular system supports.

Decide what to remove, move, or keep

Action Best use Main caution
Remove temporary files You need quick space and the files are identified by Windows or the console as disposable. Review the category so an unfinished download or work file is not lost.
Uninstall an unused game or app You no longer need the installation and can download it again later. Check saves, mods, recordings, and settings separately.
Move personal files You want to keep photos, videos, downloads, or recordings. Verify the copy and maintain a backup before deleting the original.
Move a Steam library installation Another suitable drive has space and you want to avoid a fresh download. The destination must remain connected and usable by Steam.
Use USB extended storage on PS5 The console supports the device and you need additional game or file capacity. Compatibility and game-location rules vary; formatting can erase the device.

Recheck space and start the download

  1. Close any cleanup, file-transfer, or uninstall operation and wait for it to finish.
  2. Reopen the storage view for the exact drive or console location selected for the game.
  3. Compare the new free-space figure with the game’s current installation requirement.
  4. Return to the store page or launcher and confirm the destination has not changed.
  5. Start the download and watch for a separate installation or update-space message.

If the download still reports insufficient space, do not immediately delete more files at random. First check whether the launcher selected a different library, whether a partially downloaded file remains, or whether another update is using the same destination. Reopen the platform’s storage view and inspect the largest categories again.

When the displayed size does not match the space needed

Download size, installed size, temporary unpacking space, and update space can differ. The official guidance reviewed for Windows, Steam, and PS5 does not define a universal extra amount that works for every title. Use the requirement shown by the current game listing or launcher, and follow any additional message produced during installation. If the publisher changes the requirement, the newer listing takes precedence over an old screenshot, video, or forum post.

A compact pre-download checklist

  • Destination identified: the correct Windows drive, Steam library, PS5 Console Storage, or supported USB location.
  • Current requirement checked: you used the game’s present store or launcher information.
  • Built-in cleanup reviewed: temporary files and recommendations were inspected rather than blindly selected.
  • Personal files protected: wanted items were moved and verified, not casually deleted.
  • Recycle Bin handled: deleted Windows files were reviewed before emptying it.
  • Game data considered: saves, mods, screenshots, and recordings were checked before uninstalling.
  • External storage verified: the drive is compatible, connected, and backed up where necessary.
  • Space rechecked: the free-space figure was confirmed on the same destination immediately before downloading.

These steps keep the cleanup focused on the drive that matters and favor reversible actions first. They also leave you with a clear record of what changed if the launcher still needs additional room.
